Sensation and Perception is the seventh program in the DISCOVERING PSYCHOLOGY series. This program unravels the complex process of how we see. You'll learn about visual illusions and what causes them, the biology of perception, the visual pathway, and how the human brain processes information during perception. Interview Excerpt: David Hubel and the Visual Pathway Dr. David Hubel explains how cellular structures in the nervous system create the visual pathway between eyesight and brain processing.

63. Processing Visual Information

Processing Visual Information
It is estimated that the human brain contains 100 billion (10 ) neurons averaging 1000 synapses on each; that is, some 10 connections. How to unravel the workings of such a complex system? Progress has been slow, but a solid start has been made in determining how the brain processes information reaching it from the eyes . In fact, the processing starts within the eyes. (This should not be surprising inasmuch as the retina is actually an extension of the brain.) Link to discussion of the eye. The visual receptors, rods and cones , synapse in the retina with several types of interneurons , e.g., bipolar cells These, in turn, synapse with ganglion cells The axons of ganglion cells make up the optic nerve and conduct impulses to the brain. But each receptor does not have its own private circuit back to the brain. There are some 10 rods and cones in each eye, but only 10 ganglion cell axons in the optic nerve. Thus a single ganglion cell must receive inputs from a number of receptor cells. By inserting an electrode in a single ganglion cell, it was shown (by Stephen W.

Nobel Laureates in Medicine 1901-1997 When David Hunter Hubel graduated with a B.Sc. from McGill University in 1947, he decided, almost by flipping a coin, to take medicine instead of physics, his particular interest at the time. In 1981, his discoveries “concerning information processing in the visual system” led to his being one of three doctors to share that year’s Nobel prize in medicine. In doing so, he became the third Canadian-born medical doctor awarded the prize since Alfred Nobel, the Swedish chemist and industrialist provided funds for the award in 1901.
He is seen here, left, presenting the Governor General’s Silver Medal, in 1972, to the Acadia undergraduate achieving the highest academic standing in his/her first Bachelor’s degree program. [Photo courtesy Office of Public Affairs/Acadia University] The first Canadian to receive this award was Dr. Frederick Banting (1891-1941) who became a household name for his role in co-discovering insulin in 1921; the second was Dr. Charles B. Huggins who shared the award in 1966 for cancer research. Dr. Hubel was a professor of neurobiology at the Harvard University Medical School in 1981 when he became a co-winner with his friend and co-worker at Harvard, Dr. Torsten Wiesel, and neuroscientist Dr. Roger Sperry of the California Institute of Technology.
After learning in 1981 that he had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology, which he shared with fellow laureate, Torsten Weisel, for work on “information processing in the visual system,” Ontario-born David Hubel held a celebration conference in his classroom at Harvard University. A neurophysiologist, Dr. Hubel is one of only three Canadian-born doctors to be so honoured for their distinguished work in medical research. [Photo courtesy Marc Peloquin via Dr. David Hubel]

Index to the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File
About the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File What is the Scientists and Engineers Biographical File? It is a collection of hard copy files with information on scientists who were prominent in the early 1970s. It consists of folders containing photographs, biographical information and bibliographies of 1200 American and 100 foreign scientists and engineers. How was the collection formed? The collection was formed during the years 1972 - 75. The Science and Technology Division contacted well known and lesser known scientists and engineers of the mid-twentieth century, and asked them to donate the materials. Those asked included:
  • Members of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineers Scientists listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineers of Distinction Nobel Prize recipients and winners of the National Medal for Science Members of Scientists in Search of Their Consciences.

The Brain
Tracer Bullet 90-10
SCOPE This literature guide is intended primarily for the general reader who would like to catch a glimpse of recent research on the brain, the most complex of our bodily organs. The brain is literally the nerve center of the whole human organism. Approaches to the study of the brain are many-faceted involving molecular, cellular, organ, behavioral, pathological, and computational levels. New techniques and tools have allowed researchers to explore these many layers. The joint congressional resolution designating the 1990s as the Decade of the Brain is expected to add impetus to the advancement of research in the field. This guide updates Brain and behavior (TB 79-3). Not meant to be a comprehensive bibliography, it is designedas the name of the series impliesto put the reader "on target."
