(b. April 10, 1887, Buenos Aires, Arg.d. Sept. 21, 1971, Buenos Aires), Argentine physiologist who received (with Carl and Gerty Cori ) the 1947 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the role played by pituitary hormones in regulating the amount of blood sugar (glucose) in animals. Working with dogs that had been rendered diabetic by excision of the pancreas (1924-37), Houssay found that removal of the adenohypophysis (the anterior, or frontal, lobe of the pituitary body, located beneath the brain) greatly relieved the symptoms of the disease and made the animal unusually sensitive to insulin. He demonstrated that injection of pituitary extracts into normal animals induces diabetes by increasing the amount of sugar in the blood, indicating that the secretions of the gland oppose the action of insulin. a leading physiological research centre. Houssay, Bernardo Alberto Bernardo Alberto Houssay was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on April 10, 1887, one of the eight children of Dr. Albert and Clara (née Laffont) Houssay, who had come to Argentina from France. His father was a barrister. His early education was at a private school, the Colegio Britanico. He then entered the School of Pharmacy of the University of Buenos Aires at the exceptionally early age of 14, graduating in 1904. He had already begun studying medicine and, in 1907, before completing his studies, he took up a post in the Department of Physiology. He began here his research on the hypophysis which resulted in his M.D.-thesis (1911), a thesis which earned him a University prize.
He has worked in almost every field of physiology, having a special interest in the endocrine glands. He has made a lifelong study of the hypophysis and his most important discovery concerns the role of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis in carbohydrate metabolism and the onset of diabetes. He has worked on many other topics in physiology and pharmacology, including the physiology of circulation and respiration, the processes of immunity, the nervous system, digestion, and snake and spider venoms.
Apart from his research, he has been active in promoting the advancement of university and medical education, and of scientific research, in Argentina.

Name: Bernardo Alberto Houssay Birth Date: April 10, 1887 Death Date: September 27, 1971 Place of Birth: Buenos Aires, Argentina Place of Death: Buenos Aires, Argentina Nationality: Argentine Gender: Male Occupations: physiologist, endocrinologist Bernardo Alberto Houssay Main Biography The Argentine physiologist Bernardo Alberto Houssay (1887-1971) is noted for his research in endocrinology, particularly on the activity of the hypophysis. Bernardo Alberto Houssay was born in Buenos Aires on April 10, 1887. His father, Alberto Houssay, was a French-born lawyer and philosopher. Young Bernardo was a prodigy: by the age of 9 he had completed secondary school and was a mere 13 when he received his bachelor's degree. He then entered the Buenos Aires College of Medical Sciences, specializing in pharmacology, a concentration which was to be reflected in many of his research papers over the next 60 years. In 1904 he completed these studies and began medical training. Houssay graduated with honors in 1911, presenting for his thesis an elaborate study of the pituitary body. These early studies marked Houssay as a laboratory researcher rather than as a practitioner of medicine. He was named professor of physiology in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Agronomy of Buenos Aires, and in 1919 he was appointed to the first full professorship in the Buenos Aires School of Medicine. Under Houssay's direction the Institute for Physiology was established, where for over two full generations he labored on a frontier of biology. Following clues observed in his early student years, he tracked down the elusive hormonal and enzymatic systems that regulate the body's metabolism.

Bernardo Alberto Houssay – Nobel Lecture
Nobel Lecture, December 12, 1947
The role of the hypophysis in carbohydrate metabolism and in diabetes
The nutritive substances used in greatest quantities by mammals are carbohydrates. - These are ingested with the food or produced by the liver, and after being converted into glucose they are utilized by all the cells of the organism, specially by the muscles, which constitute nearly half the mass of the body. Production and consumption of carbohydrates is so well regulated that there is a constant blood sugar level; any accidental increase or fall in blood sugar is rapidly compensated. The constancy of the blood sugar level is maintained by a complex physiological mechanism, a homeostatic mechanism of the same order as those which maintain the body temperature, the blood pressure or the heart rate at normal levels and control many other functions. The blood sugar level itself is an important factor in many chemical and physiological processes. The liver is the principal organ in the regulation of the blood sugar level. If the liver is removed there is a progressive hypoglycemia which ends in death. After hepatectomy it is not possible to provoke hyperglycemia, whatever the agent or procedure employed, whether the animal were diabetic or not before the liver was removed. Nor is it possible to produce any form of diabetes in hepatectomized animals. On the other hand, when there is hyperglycemia the liver diminishes or ceases the production of sugar, and stores it.
