New York City, April 10, 1927] In 1961 Nirenberg became the first person to determine what one letter of the genetic code stands for, using RNA. This opened the way for Nirenberg and colleagues to crack the genetic code completely by 1966, demonstrating which sequence of three nucleotide bases (a codon) determined each of 20 amino acids, along with similar three-letter codes for start and stop. In 1959, Nirenberg was chosen as a postdoctoral fellow of the Public Health Service's Section on Metabolic Enzymes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The following year, Nirenberg joined the NIH staff as a research biochemist.

Who was the mysterious and possibly dangerous man we call ..........
Robert W. Holley
Born on January 28, 1922 in Urbana, Illinois.
1942- Recieved B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois.
1944-1946- Spent these two years with Professor Vincent du Vigneaud at Cornell University where he was involved in the first chemical synthesis of penicillin.
1947- Received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Cornell University.
1948- Became a professor of Organic Chemistry at the Geneva Experiment Station at Cornell.
1955-56- Took a sabbatical leave from Cornell and studied protein synthesis. Towards the end of this year he carried out experiments on the acceptor of activated amino acids.
1968- *Shared NOBEL PRIZE for Physiology/Medicine.
What was known at this point (1956) :
- Amino acids are activated enzymatically to form amino acyl-adenylates (Hoagland, Kellerl and Zanecnik, DeMoss, Genuth and Novelli, and Berg and Newtons). - The acceptor of the activated amino acids was a low molecular weight RNA (Hoagland et al., Otata and Nohara). - The Craig Countercurrent Distribution Technique - after a four year wait- was finally developed.

Former Winners, 1965
Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research Robert W. Holley Obituary The following is an excerpt of an obituary for Dr. Holley published by the New York Times on Sunday, February 14, 1993.
Robert W. Holley, a biologist who won the Nobel Prize for unraveling the genetic code of ribonucleic acid, died Thursday. He was 71.
Dr. Holley was the first to unravel the internal structure in a strand of RNA, which helps determine what form and role each cell takes in a larger organism. Under the RNA's direction, building blocks of proteins become different parts of living things. The scientific structure he analyzed was alanine transfer RNA.
His later research at Salk focused on the factors that stimulate or inhibit the growth of cells in mammals, and studies on the factors controlling the timing of cell division.
