Electron Scattering from Nuclei
The scattering of electrons from nuclei has given us the most precise information about nuclear size and charge distribution. The electron is a better nuclear probe than the alpha particles of Rutherford scattering because it is a point particle and can penetrate the nucleus. For low energies and under conditions where the electron does not penetrate the nucleus, the electron scattering can be described by the Rutherford formula . The Rutherford formula is an analytic expression for the differential scattering cross section, and for a projectile charge of 1, it is As the energy of the electrons is raised enough to make them an effective nuclear probe, a number of other effects become significant, and the scattering behavior diverges from the Rutherford formula. The probing electrons are relativistic, they produce significant nuclear recoil, and they interact via their magnetic moment as well as by their charge. When the magnetic moment and recoil are taken into account, the expression is called the Mott cross section: A major period of investigation of nuclear size and structure occurred in the 1950's with the work of Robert Hofstadter and others who compared their high energy electron scattering results with the Mott cross section. The illustration below from Hofstadter's work shows the divergence from the Mott cross section which indicates that the electrons are penetrating the nucleus - departure from point-particle scattering is evidence of the structure of the nucleus.

Text
The American physicist Robert Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 5, 1915, d. Nov. 17, 1990, was known for his fundamental work in high-energy physics. His experiments yielded the first information on the structure of protons and neutrons, for which he received the 1961 NOBEL PRIZE in physics. Using the linear accelerator at Stanford University, where he taught (1980-85), Hofstadter bombarded atomic nuclei with electrons having energies of 100-600 MeV. He found that protons and neutrons are composed of positively charged cores that are surrounded by a double cloud of positive mesons in the proton and a positive and negative shell in the neutron. Hofstadter's son, Douglas Richard Hofstadter, b. New York City, Feb. 15, 1945, a cognitive scientist and educator, won fame with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Godel, Escher, Bach (1979), an examination of computers, language, music, and the way humans think. Dietrologia: The Language of Conspiracy Culture
The language of conspiracy has become a familiar feature of the political and cultural landscape in the last couple of decades. Peter Knight’s book, Conspiracy Culture chronicles narratives from JFK to The X-Files . This book examines how and why a reconfigured culture of conspiracy has become so influential over the last quarter century or so. Knight examines a presumption towards conspiracy as both a mode of explanation and a mode of political operation, which he terms ‘conspiracy culture’ ( CC Conspiracy theories have a long history in the USA. It could even be argued that the Republic itself was founded amid fears and allegations on both sides, with the leaders of the American revolution well schooled in discerning political intrigue and deception, a lesson they had learned from British politics ( CC , 2). The identity of the emerging state was shaped by the continual fear of sinister enemies, both real and imagined, both external and internal. American history has seen more than the threat to God’s chosen nation, conjuring up tales about subversive forces ranging form Catholics and Communists, and from the Masons to the militias. Following the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963, Knight claims conspiracy theories have become a regular feature of everyday political and cultural life, not so much an occasional outburst of counter-subversive invective as part and parcel of many people’s normal way of thinking about who they are and how the world works. Conspiracy theories are now less a sign of mental delusion than an ironic stance towards knowledge and the possibility of truth, operating within the rhetorical terrain of the double negative. ‘I may be paranoid, […] but that doesn’t mean that they’re not out to get me’ (CC, 2).

The Bridge to Parenthood I was disturbed by Paulette Bates Alden's easy dismissal of adoption ( "Crossing to Motherhood," May/June). For every affluent infertile couple, there are children somewhere in the world living in inadequate institutions or on the streets. Couples ready for parenthood should be ready to open their hearts and homes to children who have lost their original families. Education equips us to understand this; affluence gives us the means to address this; infertility confers a special calling to actually do this. After coming to terms with not being able to have children, there is still one more bridge to cross. David Mason,'68
Culver City, California The question, "Should I be a mother?" needs to be answered only by husband and wifeand before conceiving a child. Too often couples have children before they are financially ready to do so. The house isn't close to being paid for, and no money has been set aside for the child. Having children does not make couples complete, whole, fulfilled and happy. They don't need to "have" children to express the qualities of motherhood and fatherhood. Why not give to the children in the community, foster or adopt children? The lives of children (and adults) would be blessed or maybe savedand so would the world ecologically.

In Memoriam
Robert Herman
Famed physicist, OR pioneer, "father of transportation science" and sculptor remembered as a "scientist's scientist"
Robert Herman, a leading light in the wide world of science, died on Feb. 13, 1997, after a long, brave fight against cancer. His last e-mail messages to some of his friends revolved on matters of science and his concern for a doctoral student. This was Robert Herman at his best until the very end, a scientist's scientist and a loving mentor.
The loss of Herman is hard to bear for those who have known him, but it is more appropriate to celebrate his life than lament his loss, and I know that this is how Herman would like it. The world of operations research is richer for having had Robert Herman in its fold over the past 40 years or so.
Herman was a leading light within ORSA, joining the society shortly after its inception, serving on its Council, and then as its president. As an ORSA officer and practitioner, he challenged the society to continue redefining its mission as one of addressing new, important societal problems and not just refining solutions to old ones. One of the unfinished projects that his untimely death forced him to leave behind was an attempt to model a university as a system and try to develop a methodology for improving such a system. "Many leaders of higher education," he wrote, "believe that the current period calls for more than the usual, ongoing institutional restructuring of the American academic enterprise."
