Roald Hoffmann
was born in Zloczow, Poland, in 1937. Having survived the Nazi occupation, he arrived in the U.S. in 1949, after several years of post-war wandering in Europe. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School, Columbia University, and proceeded to take his Ph.D. in 1962, at Harvard University, working with W. N. Lipscomb and Martin Gouterman. Dr. Hoffmann stayed on at Harvard University from 1962-1965, as a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows. Since 1965, he has been at Cornell University, where he is now the Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters and Professor of Chemistry.     Professor Hoffmann is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He has been elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, the Indian National Science Academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Nordrhein Westfällische Academy of Sciences. He has received numerous honors, including over twenty five honorary degrees. He is the only person ever to have received the American Chemical Society's awards in three different specific subfields of chemistry the A. C. Cope Award in Organic Chemistry, the Award in Inorganic Chemistry, and the Pimentel Award in Chemical Education. As well as two other ACS awards. In 1981, he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Kenichi Fukui.

Seeing Beauty as a Scientist
Alanna Albano
Hoffmann tells stories about chemistry as a way of making the inherent complexity of science more palatable and more simple; in other words, he wishes to disguise the complexity. Zee instead uses his physics stories to bring out the simplicity that he believes is hidden beneath many layers of complexity. As I describe my accounts of various scientific experiments encountered in and out of the classroom, I will show how both scientists' ideas explain or do not explain my experiences of beauty as a student scientist.
Looking back at the first part of Hoffmann's statement, I am not too sure that I agree with his idea that the human mind instinctively craves simplicity. First of all, I question what he means by "human mind." Does he imply a science-oriented mind, a non-science one, or both? Since he does not specify, I will speak for one with a science-oriented mind. Yes, at times I do crave simplicity; for example, if there are two possible ways to walk to a store in town, I will most likely choose the simplest and most direct route. If I am given a choice of readings for a class, I will probably choose the ones that are simpler to read. On the other hand, when it comes to science I do not want the simple version; rather, I prefer the most complete explanation of a scientific phenomenon.

Chemist and Writer: An Interview with Roald Hoffmann
"I love seeing connections," says chemist, poet and Nobel laureate Roald Hoffmann of Cornell University. "I can teach chemists the language of solid-state physics, and maybe teach physicists the inherent value of chemical bonding concepts." Roald Hoffmann is also a literate chemist, as we can see from his recent book Chemistry Imagined: Reflections on Science. This is a joint publication with the artist Vivian Torrence, and combines essays, poems, and articles with a series of collages inspired by chemistry. Torrence has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where Hoffmann is Professor of Physical Science, and her work has been exhibited in art galleries across the United States. Hoffmann's literary achievement shows that chemistry can be a worthwhile, if unexpected, subject for poetry and prose. Hoffmann was born in eastern Poland in 1937, just before that part of his native country was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1939. In 1941 it was overrun by the Nazis, and although he was of Jewish parents, Hoffmann survived the Second World War. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1949, settled in New York, and went to Stuyvesant High School. From there he went to Columbia College and graduated in 1958. His next stop was Harvard, where he was awarded an M.A. in physics in 1960 and a Ph.D. in chemical physics in 1962, working under the supervision of Martin Gouterman and William Lipscomb. His research involved applying the theory of molecular orbitals to polyhedral collections of atoms.

Poland (now Ukraine ) and named in honor of the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen. His family immigrated to the United States of America in 1949, where he attended Stuyvesant High School, graduating in 1955. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia University (Columbia College) in 1958, and his Master of Arts degree in 1960 and his Doctor of Philosophy degree (working under the subsequent 1976 chemistry Nobel Prize winner William N. Lipscomb, Jr.) in 1962, both from Harvard University. He also developed, with R. B. Woodward, rules for elucidating reaction mechanisms. He is also a writer of poetry published in two collections, "The Metamict State" (1987) and "Gaps and Verges" (1990), and of books explaining chemistry to the general public. Also, he wrote a play called "O2 Oxygen" about the discovery of Oxygen, but also about what it means to be a scientist and the importance of process of discovery in science. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. The following press release from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences describes Hoffman and co-winner Kenichi Fukui's work:
