Proceedings of the Thirty First Symposium on Regulation of Enzyme Activity and Synthesis in Normal and Neoplastic Tissues, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1-2 October 1990
Edited by
G. Weber
, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, Indiana
Included in series
Advances in Enzyme Regulation, 31

Description
Volume 31 in this series presents novel approaches in chemotherapy, focusing on inhibitors of key enzymes (thymidylate synthase, IMP dehydrogenase, purine salvage enzymes and ribonucleotide reductase) and other strategic enzymes of nucleic acid biosynthesis. Among various important topics this volume also concentrates on the role of signal transduction in mammals and yeast. Diversities of a family of signal transducing protein kinases are also highlighted and the role of inositol lipid phosphorylatin in the cell nucleus is discussed. The molecular basis of carcinogenesis is examined with emphasis on the expression of cellular oncogenes in human neuroblastoma and on action of tumour suppressor genes. The Special Symposium Lecture, one of the highlights of this two-day symposium, was delivered by George H Hitchings, who spoke on "Properties of Purine and Pyrimidine Analogs", a topic which brought him the Nobel Prize.

NATIONAL/FOREIGN A British doctor who developed the first "beta-blocking" drug to combat coronary heart disease and two American researchers from North Carolina whose 44-year collaboration has produced seven major drugs against leukemia, malaria, herpes and other diseases yesterday were awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in medicine. Sir James W. Black, 64, of King's College Hospital Medical School in London, will share the prize money of nearly $400,000 with Gertrude B. Elion, 70, and George H. Hitchings, 83, both officially retired but still working every day at Burroughs Wellcome Research Laboratories in Research Triangle Park, N.C. In awarding the prize to Elion and Hitchings, the Nobel committee at Stockholm's Karolinska Institute said their work is so important that each of the seven drugs for which they are being honored "could have won a Nobel." Like many Nobel laureates, yesterday's honorees learned of the award through early morning telephone calls from journalists. At first, Elion simply could not believe it.

Brave. that is how parents most frequently describe their children who cope with leukemiathe needle pokes and jabs, the tests, the frequent visits to the doctor, the medication. According to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in the U.S. about 2,500 children a year are diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It is the most common childhood cancer and usually strikes two- to five-year-olds. As chemist Gertrude B. Elion said in her Nobel Prize acceptance lecture in 1988, the median life expectancy for children with acute leukemia in the late 1940s was between three and four months. Long-term survival rates are now around 80%. The increase in cure rate "is entirely [associated] with drug therapynot with radiation therapy, not with surgery," says Richard M. Weinshilboum, an internist and researcher in the department of molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. The first effective leukemia drug was 6-mercaptopurine, developed by Elion and George H. Hitchings, who worked together for 30 years at Burroughs Wellcome Research Laboratories. They shared the Nobel Prize in 1988. The Nobel assembly said their work has "fundamental significance," as they pioneered what is now known as rational drug design: the targeted synthesis of molecules with desired structures.

Samuel W. Melendy Lecture
Samuel W. Melendy was a staunch supporter of the College of Pharmacy in its early years. As a member of the Minnesota State Pharmaceutical Association, he played an active role in promoting the establishment of a School of Pharmacy at the University, which opened under Dean Frederick Wulling in 1882. In the early years of the school, Melendy was a frequent visitor who often times lent equipment to the school. Before Melendy's death in 1916, he discussed with Dean Wulling his will to leave a sum of money to the College for graduate scholarships and fellowships. His wish also included money for an annual lectureship that would emphasize the scientific, ethical and professional aspects of pharmacy. After his death, Melendy's widow endowed funds for both of his wishes. The first Melendy Lecture was given in 1943 by Dean Frederick J. Wulling. Many distinguished local and national figures have participated since. Many of these lectures have been past deans, alumni and have also included the former Vice President of the United States, Hubert H. Humphrey. Members of the 1999 College Board join invited Melendy Lecturer and former College faculty member, David Angaran.

Humboldt County sits approximately 200 miles north of San Francisco along the Pacific Coast on Hwy 101. Eureka, the county seat, is 278 miles north of San Francisco and 466 miles south of Portland, Oregon. The county encompasses 2.3 million acres, eighty percent of which is timber land and recreation areas. The county is mostly mountainous, except for the level plain that surrounds Humboldt Bay. Elevations run from sea level to 6,934 feet. Located within the county boundaries are 10 state parks, 16 county parks and beaches, recreational areas and reserves, and portions of the National Park and National Forest.
Humboldt County was incorporated on May 12, 1853. It's County seat, Eureka, was created on that same date. The county derived its name from Humboldt Bay which was entered by a sea otter party in 1806, but was not rediscovered until 1849. In 1850, Douglas Ottinger and Hans Buhne entered the bay, naming it Humboldt in honor of the great naturalist and world explorer,
Baron Alexander von Humboldt.

The Population in 2000 was 128,419
