Heyrovský, Jaroslav, (szül. 1890. dec. 20. Prága - megh. 1967. márc. 27. A Csehszlovák Tudományos Akadémia polarográfiai intézetét is igazgatta (1950, 1952-63).

The Jaroslav Heyrovský Endowment Fund Jaroslav Heyrovský Endowment Fund Jaroslav Heyrovský Endowment was founded on 10.9.1993. In 1998, to comply with the new law, it was transformed into the Jaroslav Heyrovský Endowment Fund. The originators of the Endowment as well as of the Endowment Fund are Mgr Jitka Èerná née Heyrovská, , Dr Michael Heyrovský, Mgr Jitka Macháèková and Mgr Petr Pajkrt.
Purpose of the Fund
The main aim of action is to assist in search for talented secondary school students, to promote their personal growth, to support their further development in the field of their interest, and to provide creative atmosphere in which the dispositions of talented youth can thrive. The purpose of the Fund is fulfilled primarily by the following activities :
  • conferring Prizes of the Jaroslav Heyrovský Endowment Fund providing grants for elaboration of individual secondary school tasks assisting financially to specialized meetings of students and/or/with teachers opening and mediating contacts between individuals, groups and institutions engaging in scientific and technical activities (special schools, universities, Academy institutes, etc.) establishing international cooperation with similar institutions abroad supporting completely or partly occasional participations of successful Czech winners in international competitions or gatherings co-organizing international specialized competitions in the Czech Republic publishing methodical and informative brochures for students and/or teachers

Jaroslav Heyrovský
Physical chemist, founder of polarography, first Czech bearer of Nobel Prize.
YOUTH
From early age keenly interested in nature, music, literature. At the Prague Academic secondary school professor J.Jeni¹ta directed his attention toward mathematics, physics and astronomy. After first year of study of natural science at Prague Charles University, out of his admiration of the discoveries of British scientists, he went to study chemistry and physics at the London University College under professors William Ramsay and Frederick G.Donnan. The outbreak of the World War I. caught him on holidays at home. He was drafted to the Austro-Hungarian army where he served in military dispensaries; that gave him the chance to stay in contact with chemistry.
THE DROPPING MERCURY ELECTRODE
In the last days of war, still as soldier, he applied for PhD degree at Charles University. In course of the oral examination in physics professor B.Kuèera invited the candidate to continue in studies of surface tension of mercury by the method introduced by Kuèera at the beginning of the century. The principle consisted in weighing drops of mercury falling out of a thick-walled glass capillary into a solution. The dropping mercury, connected to a source of d.c.voltage, served as one electrode, the second electrode being the layer of mercury collecting at the bottom of the vessel.
After long, tedious measurements Heyrovský found that if he measured electric current passing through the mercury drops and the solution, he obtained important information about the quality and quantity of substances contained in the solution. That information can serve chemical analysis as well as basic physico-chemical research.

the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Your Majesties, Royal Highnesses, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Analytical chemistry is a science, fundamental not only to the other branches of scientific chemical research, but also to applied chemistry, the chemical industry. Further it is important for the other natural sciences, both within inorganic and organic Nature, for medical research, and for many humanistic and even jurisprudential sciences.
The striving of analysts is not only to develop methods yielding accurate results, but even more important for practical work is that the analysis can be carried out rapidly, that it can be done using as small samples as possible, and that very small percentages of various substances can be detected and ascertained.
Polarography is one of these micro-methods which are available to the modern analyst.
Professor Bohumil Kucera of Prague once suggested to the young Jaroslav Heyrovsky that he should study certain irregularities in connection with the capillarity of mercury and attempt to disclose their origin. This was one of the innumerable small problems constituting science. Heyrovsky let the mercury flow through a glass capillary and weighed the drops. It was a slow and tedious method, and he resolved instead to measure the electric current obtained when he put a tension between the mercury in the capillary and that collecting at the bottom. The glass capillary does not terminate in the air, but in a solution, through which the current now will flow.

T he Institute of Polarography was founded in 1950 under the directorship of picture [39kB]), and two years later became part of the newly constituted Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Research activities focused both on the theory of polarography and physico-chemical processes occurring at dropping and streaming mercury electrodes, and on the methodology, instrumentation and analytical applications of polarography. T he early sixties marked the start of a gradual extension of pursued research topics from polarography to other disciplines of general and applied electrochemistry, including different methods of electroanalysis, electrochemical power sources, and electrochemical processes at interfaces between immiscible electrolyte solutions with relevance to biological membranes. W T he Institute of Physical Chemistry , with Professor Rudolf Brdicka picture A difficult situation occurred after the invasion of the country by Warsaw Pact armies in 1968, when many members of the Institute including several leading personalities emigrated to the West.
