Walter Rudolf Hess was born in Switzerland on March 17, 1881. He did his medical school studies at the Universities of Lausenne, Bern, Berlin, and Kiel and graduated from University of Zurich in 1905. He was a talented ophthalmologist that devised an apparatus for the oculomotor coordination exam for patients with strabismus. Hess was one of the great European physiologists who performed notorious investigations concerning the effect of altitude on the body, hemodynamics and the respiration mechanisms. He dedicated most of his life to investigating the responses of the behavior, respiration and blood pressure by stimulating the diencephalon of cats using techniques of this ower design. SECRET OF PRISONER No. 7 UNSETTLED IN 20th CENTURY - WHAT'S NEXT ? In one of the most startling events of the Second World War, Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy Fuhrer, arrived unexpectedly in Scotland in May 1941 after baling out of a Messerschmidt he had personally piloted from Germany. He demanded to see the Marquess of Clydesdale (the future 14th Duke of Hamilton), whom he said he had met at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and claimed his mission was to seek a peace between Germany and Britain. Prime Minister W. Churchill refused to see Hess, and he was imprisoned for the duration of the war. In 1946 he was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Nuremberg Tribunal and spent the rest of his life in Spandau Military Prison, Berlin.

Rudolf Walter Richard Hess Rudolf Hess was born in a small German community located in Alexandria, Egypt on April 26th 1894. His father, Fritz, was a successful exporter and wholesaler. The very strict and traditional Fritz Hess considered the local German Protestant School lax in the disciplinary department, therefore, his son was educated by private tutors. Young Hess was an insecure, moody loner and never stood up to the strict demands of his father. Although he preferred to become an astronomer or a physicist, Hess studied business because his father wanted to prepare him to take over the family business. In 1908, the family moved to Germany and Hess enrolled in boarding school and subsequently traveled to Switzerland to attend business school. In 1914, when the first World War broke out, Hess volunteered for duty. He joined the 7th Bavarian Field Artillery Regiment and later became an infantryman. He performed his military duties with courage and integrity and was awarded the Iron Cross, second class. Despite being twice wounded at the front, he applied for the Imperial Air Corps. His application was rejected, but undaunted, Hess applied for a second time. He was accepted for aeronautical training and was attached to an operational squadron. Soon afterwards, Germany surrendered and the war came to an end.
The Roots of Hatred
Adolf's history teacher would have a profound effect on him. Dr. Leopold Poetsch was a fervent German nationalist and a firm follower of the Pan-German movement. The Pan-Germans believed in the superiority of the Aryan race and the

The Inside Story of the Hess Flight
ANONYMOUS On 10 May 1941, Rudolf Hess made his daring flight from Germany to Britain in a vain bid to stop the tragic conflict between two nations he admired and loved. When Hitler's Deputy parachuted to earth from a Messerschmitt fighter over south Scotland, Germany and Britain had already been at war with each other for twenty months. It is well known that Hess made this unprecedented move to impress on Britain's war leaders just how earnestly Germany desired peace. But even after the passage of forty years, much about the famous episode remains shrouded in mystery. The biggest question is whether Hitler knew in advance about the flight. Did he even order Hess on this mission of peace, as some insist? We cannot be sure if Hess would reveal the truth if he could. His ardent loyalty to Hitler might keep him from telling the whole story even if he were able. The truth may not be known until the secret British government documents on the matter are one day finally removed from the closed archives and made available to the world in uncensored form. Still, there is strong evidence that Hess risked his life for peace under orders from Adolf Hitler himself. In its issue of May 1943, the American Mercury published "The Inside Story of the Hess Flight," a remarkable article which self-assuredly reported that the flight was personally directed by Hitler and completely expected by the British.
