Born: 18 June 1932, San Jose, California Education: Stanford University;Ph.D. in Chemical Physics (1958) at Harvard University Dudley R(obert) Herschbach was a member of the Chemistry Faculty at the University of California, Berkeley (1959-1963), before returning to his alma mater, Harvard Univeristy as Professor of Chemistry (1963), where he is now Baird Professor of Science (since 1976). He developed the method of crossed molecular beams, directed and well-defined fluxes of molecules, to and beyond the point where detailed studies of chemical reactions have been possible. Working with others, he elucidated the mechanisms of chemical reactions, detailing the sequence of events and energy release. Prior to his work, any fundamental understanding of what molecular features influence the rate of chemical reactions had been slow in developing. Whether a chemical reaction takes place, the colliding molecules often requires some special property such as high velocity or large internal energy. However, the directions and velocities of the molecular motion in a gas or a liquid are mainly random. Consequently, the collisions between the molecules are ill-defined as regards, for example, the kinetic energy in the collision. The details of the reaction thus become blurred and cannot be observed precisely enough. In the figure, two directed molecular fluxes are shown, .i.e. idealized molecular beams. In the crossing region, a reaction can take place and new molecules can form. In this special case oxygen atoms (red) react with hydrogen atoms (black), and form a long-lived complex, which is an energy-rich and thus unstable water molecule. Each complex dissociates finally to a hydrogen atom and a hydroxyl radical.

NRC and the Nobel Prize Throughout the 21 st century, NRC has been a fertile ground for researchers making ground-breaking discoveries. Many scientists who have passed through the doors of NRC have been bestowed the honour of Nobel laureate, among them the following:
  • Gerhard Herzberg: Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1971
Hailed as the father of modern spectroscopy, Dr. Herzberg joined the NRC in 1948 and retired in 1995 at the age of 90. During his years at NRC, he established a laboratory that became the world centre for molecular spectroscopy.
John Polanyi: Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1986
Dr. Polanyi was awarded the Nobel Prize for the development of a new field of research in chemistry called reaction dynamics. He was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the NRC Laboratories in Ottawa from 1952 to1954. The prize was shared between Polanyi, Dudley R. Herschbach, and Yuan T. Lee.
Dr. Herschbach was awarded the Nobel Prize for the development of a new field of research in chemistry called reaction dynamics. He was a visiting researcher at the NRC Laboratories in Ottawa in the early 1950s. The prize was shared between Polanyi, Dudley R. Herschbach, and Yuan T. Lee.

Related Links Dudley Robert Herschbach (born June 18 ), a chemist and Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University , won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry jointly with Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi "for their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes." Herschbach and Lee specifically worked with molecular beams, performing so-called "crossed molecular beam" experiments that enabled a detailed molecular-level understanding of many elementary reaction processes. Herschbach's research has ranged broadly over the field of chemical physics, including much theoretical work in dimensional scaling. Hershbach's teaching ranges from graduate seminars on chemical kinetics to an introductory undergraduate course in general chemistry that he taught for many years at Harvard and described as his "most challenging assignment." Herschbach has been a strong proponent of science education and science among the general public, and frequently gives lectures to students of all ages, imbuing them with his infectious enthusiasm for science and his playful spirit of discovery. Herschbach was born in San Jose, California

Polanyi (b. 1929) received the 1986 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their contributions to the understanding of the dynamics of chemical elementary processes. Recently I recorded a conversation with Professor Herschbach in Boston and with Professor Polanyi in Toronto. Dr. Herschbach is now Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science at the Department of Chemistry, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Dr. Polanyi is University Professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. Because of scheduling difficulties, the meeting with Dudley Herschbach took place in a noisy lobby at Logan Airport in the evening of July 23, 1995. ... The location of the conversation with John Polanyi, on Tuesday, August 1, 1995, was his quiet office but his schedule was only slightly less busy than Logan Airport. However, the conversations were very pleasant and informative in both cases. The interview with Professor Polanyi is augmented here by the brief speech he gave at the Stockholm City Hall on the occasion of the Nobel Prize ceremonies in December 1986.

One of 146 laureates honored for achievements in chemistry since the inception of the prestigious Nobel Prize program in 1901, Herschbach shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Yuan T. Lee and John C. Polanyi in recognition of their contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes. Their research proved to be of great importance in the development of a new field of chemistry research, reaction dynamics, and has provided a much more detailed understanding of how chemical reactions take place. A member of the Harvard faculty since 1963, Herschbach has served as chairman of the chemistry department and of its chemical physics program. His teaching includes graduate courses in quantum mechanics, chemical kinetics, molecular spectroscopy and collision theory, as well as undergraduate courses in physical chemistry and general chemistry for freshmen, which he describes as his most challenging assignment. He also is engaged in several efforts to improve K-12 science education and public understanding of science. Herschbach is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society and the Royal Chemical Society of Great Britain. In addition to the Nobel Prize, his many international awards include the American Chemical Society's Pure Chemistry Prize and Kosolapoff Award, the Linus Pauling Medal, the Michael Polanyi Medal, the American Physical Society's Irving Langmuir Prize, the National Medal of Science, the Jaroslav Heyrovsky Medal, the Sierra Nevada Distinguished Chemist Award, the William Walker Prize and the Council of Scientific Society President's Award for Support of Science.
