important for the good of mankind. Ernest's father, a man of high ideals, was
very strict and censored the books he allowed his children to read. He forbad
Ernest's sister from studying ballet for it was coeducational, and dancing together led to "hell and damnation". Grace Hall Hemingway, Ernest's mother, considered herself pure and proper. Life
Hemingway was one of the 20th century's most important and influential writers, and many details of his own life have become nearly as well-known as has his work, along with his absence of punctuation. His image was of a stoic macho , adventurous figure, and he often drew heavily on his own experiences for his writing. He was a leading figure of the so-called Lost Generation . Hemingway's fiction, especially his early work, was dominated by two types of characters. The first type were people altered by their World War I experiences, people who'd become detached and cynical fishing bullfighting or other physical activities. Death and violence were constant themes in Hemingway's life and writing. He saw violence in both World Wars, and in the Spanish Civil War Hunting was among his favorite interests. He was notoriously accident-prone, perhaps due to his adventurous life.

Introduction
Early Years
Ernest Miller Hemingway, the second child and first son of Clarence Hemingway, a medical doctor, and Grace (Hall) Hemingway, was born on July 21, 1899, in Oak Park, Illinois, a well-to-do suburb of Chicago. His family and upbringing were conventional in their middleclass expectations and unimaginative moralism, although Hemingway would in later years characterize them, especially his mother, far more harshly than the realities justified. Much has been made of the fact that in his earliest months his mother dressed him like a girl and treated him as a sort of twin to his sister Marcelline, who was eighteen months his senior. After graduating in 1917 from Oak Park High School, where he was active in both sports and writing, he went to work as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In July of 1918, in what would prove to be the closing months of the First World War, he went to Italy as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross, and there had two experiences that would profoundly affect him psychologically. The first occurred on July 8, when a mortar explosion injured him seriously enough to require the removal of more than two hundred shell fragments from his leg (throughout his life Hemingway would endure a tremendous amount of physical punishment, culminating in two near-fatal plane crashes in Africa in 1954). The other experience was a love affair, during his convalescence in Milan, with Agnes von Kurowsky, an American nurse several years his senior. Her ending of the relationship, after talk of marriage between them, scarred Hemingway as deeply and permanently as had the enemy shell.

# Ernest or Ernie?
Whatever works for you. I've been called many different things over the years. # Okay, Ernie, what is the Information Society Project at Yale Law School The official answer is that the ISP is an intellectual center at Yale Law School for the study of a new age in which telecommunications and intellectual property are central determinants of the structure of society, the development of human culture and democratic legitimacy. Basically, they are a bunch of really bright people working on a variety of projects dealing with the intersection of technology and democracy. # There are information society projects at Yale Law School Harvard and Stanford Law School . Is this important and what kind of role do you think these centers may play?

Hemingway Notes
Novelist Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois on July 21, 1899. He was the second of six children born to Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, a physician and Grace Hall Hemingway, a singer. He was a journalist/war correspondent, a fisherman, hunter, and a boxer. During the course of his lifetime he was married to four women, three of whom were writers. He had three sons. Unable to join the army because of a congenital eye defect, Hemingway became an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in the first world war. His experiences during the war were transformative and would years later become grist for several short stories and the novel A Farewell to Arms After the war, Hemingway went home to Oak Park briefly and then moved to Chicago. Shortly after this he and his first wife, Hadley, moved to Paris where Hemingway lived among a group of what has been called 'expatriot' writers that are today key to literature as we know it. The group included James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, to name a few. It was during Hemingway's life in Paris that he wrote The Sun Also Rises The misconception that Hemingway founded a 'lost generation' is a myth that persists to this day. In truth, Hemingway never professed to believe in or belong to a 'lost generation.' He made this clear in
