Biography:
Karl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam. 1859-1940. Verner von Heidenstam, who born into the Swedish aristocracy, studied at the Stockholm Art Academy with the intention of becoming a painter, before travelling widely in the Mediterranean and the Near East. During his travels his interests gradually shifted from painting to writing, and his first collection of poetry, Pilgrimage and Wander-Years (Vallfart och vandringsår) was published in 1888. He quickly became one of Sweden's leading literary figures, and published several additional volumes of poetry before devoting himself primarily to prose, including the historical works Hans Alienus The Charles Men Karolinerna St. Bridget's Pilgrimage Heliga Birgittas pilgrimsfärjd , 1901), and a two-volume work The Tree of the Folkungs Folkunga trädet , 1905-07), which chronicles the founding of the kingdom of Sweden, and The Swedes and their Chieftains Svenska och deras hövdingar His writing is characterized by strong nationalism, and a romanticism which contrasts with the stark realism of the period. He is often compared with

Skönhetsdyrkare och socialdemokrat. Studier i Bengt Lidforss litteraturkritiska gärning
    Abstract
Bengt Lidforss (1868-1913) was professor of botany between 1910 and 1913. But after the turn of the century he also emerged as a charismatic leader within the Swedish working-class movement. He became one of its foremost publicists. In the social democratic newspaper Arbetet in Malmö he wrote about natural sciences but also about political, philosophical and literary issues. As a literary critic Lidforss was the keenest protector of the Scanian literary school, and his struggle for Ola Hansson and Vilhelm Ekelund has made its mark in Swedish literary history, as have his contributions in favour of Gustaf Fröding and August Strindberg, culminating in the polemic articles during the Strindberg Feud (1910-11). Skönhetsdyrkare och socialdemokrat. Studier i Bengt Lidforss litteraturkritiska gärning (Worshipper of Beauty And Social Democrat. Studies in Bengt Lidforss´ Achievement As A Literary Critic) emphasises the paradoxic combination of Lidforss´ fundamentally socialist views and a strong belief in art. To him art was not isolated from society but quite the contrary; a significant factor in the changing of society. The new socialistic human being should be ennobled by arts instead of emasculated by religion.

Pilgrimage: The Wander Years , 1889) announced a little later, was already completely realized in these poems, rich in colours and bold in form. They reaffirmed the right of man to the naive pleasure of living and surprised with their new rhythms and their poetic accents.
The Oriental poems which played so charmingly with colours and forms had inaugurated a new era and had made the renewal of Swedish poetry apparent to the eyes and to the imagination. In the great prose-poem intermixed with verse, Hans Alienus (1892), the tragic Odyssey of an uprooted worshipper of beauty, and especially in his Dikter (1895) [Poems] Heidenstam opens perspectives to an inner life. The time of hymns to voluptuousness is past; gravity and sadness are now persistent moods. Sentiment and duty are appreciated at their just value and what is firmly rooted in the depths of the human personality finds itself intuitively explained. What is characteristic in this conception of life, born of noble and unhappy experiences, is a proud and tolerant virility which constitutes the very essence of the suffering, the hope, and the intoxication of the poet, and a newly acquired capacity to reach the spiritual world by renunciation. An ample and profound imagination, genial sentiment, and pure humanity fill these poems - which are also admirable in the sense of form - and make Heidenstam a manly poet and a master of the lyric genre.

Nobel Prize for Literature Literature is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The award, he said, should be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." It was also Nobel's express wish that in awarding the Prize, "no consideration shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive it."
