Nobel Laureates Hideki Shirakawa Alan MacDiarmid and Alan J. Heeger before last week's Symposium to Celebrate the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Hundreds of scientists from around the world gathered at LRSM to hear each of the Nobelists lecture on Friday morning. That afternoon's session and the Saturday sessions featured leading scientists from academia and industry who spoke about synthesis and properties of conductive polymers and the theory and related technological advances spawned by the Nobel Prize-winning research that was a collaborative interdisciplinary effort.

As a chemist with distinguished research accomplishments in inorganic and materials chemistry, you had the vision to foresee the possibility of making organic polymers conduct electricity, resulting in the discovery and development of the new class of material "Conducting Polymers". As a member of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania since 1955 you made fundamental contributions to the chemistry of silicon and transition metals prior to your discovery of polymer conductivity in 1977. In collaboration with Hideki Shirakawa and colleague physicist Alan Heeger, you demonstrated that the organic polymer, polyacetylene, could be chemically doped to exhibit metallic properties, thus discovering a phenomenon completely new and unexpected to both the chemistry and physics communities.

Nobel Laureate Lecture D r. Alan J. Heeger, one of three co-winners of the 2000 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work in conductive polymers, will speak on Wednesday, March 16, during the 28th annual Nobel Laureate Lecture at CSULB. Admission is free. Heeger will discuss “Risk and Innovation in Science: A Personal History of the Road to the Nobel Prize” during a general lecture from 11 a.m.-noon, followed by a technical lecture on “Gene Sensors: Detection of Specific Targeted Sequences on DNA” from 4-5 p.m., both in the University Student Union Ballroom. Heeger, along with Professors Alan G. MacDiarmid of the University of Pennsylvania and Hideki Shirakawa of the University of Tsukuba, Japan, were recognized for their pioneering collaboration on developing plastics that conduct electrical currents.

DNA Detection using Water Soluble Conjugated Polymers and Peptide Nucleic Acids II. Bioelectronic Detection of DNA: The Electrochemical DNA Sensor Our optical approach (I) employs a PNA-DNA/RNA hybrid formation to control the distance and resonance energy transfer between an acceptor and a highly emissive, water-soluble conjugated polymer.     Semiconducting and Metallic Polymers: The Fourth Generation of Polymeric Materials Wednesday, April 18, 6:00 p.m.
    Metropolitan Ballroom, Argent Hotel Nobel laureate Alan J. Heeger obtained his PhD degree at the University of California-Berkeley in 1961. Heeger was a member of the Physics Department at the University of Pennsylvania from 1962 to 1982. He then accepted a professorship at UCSB where he was a founding member of the Materials Department and currently holds a joint appointment (Physics and Materials). Heeger, along with F. Wudl, co-founded the Institute for Polymers and Organic Solids at the University, and directed the Institute from 1983 until 1999. Heeger and his colleagues at UCSB have accomplished pioneering research in the area of semiconducting and metallic polymers. This class of novel materials has the electrical and optical properties of semiconductors and metals in combination with the processing advantages and mechanical properties of polymers. His current research interests lie in the area of transport in semiconducting polymers, light emission from semiconducting polymers (both photoluminescence and electroluminescence), and ultrafast measurements directed toward investigation of the nature of the primary photoexcitations in semiconductiong polymers. His research group focuses on issues related to the fundamental electronic structure of this novel class of materials and carries out studies of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs), and lasers, all fabricated from semiconducting (conjugated) polymers.

    PHILADELPHIA Alan G. MacDiarmid, Ph.D., Blanchard Professor of Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania, is one of three recipients of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Sharing the honor are former Penn faculty member Alan J. Heeger, Ph.D., now at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Hideki Shirakawa, Ph.D., of the University of Tsukuba in Japan. The work underlying the award which showed that plastics can be made to conduct electricity was carried out at Penn in the late 1970s, when Drs. MacDiarmid and Heeger were both on the Penn faculty. The holder of some 30 U.S. patents, Dr. MacDiarmid, 73, has been at Penn since 1955. Dr. Heeger, 64, was a physicist on the Penn faculty from 1962 to 1983 and directed the University's Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter from 1974 to 1981. "This is indeed a moment for great joy and celebration, as we join the Nobel committee in acknowledging the achievements of an outstanding researcher and faculty member," said Penn President Judith Rodin. "This path-breaking research into 'conducting polymers,' that is, plastics that can conduct electricity, introduced a new and completely unexpected phenomenon to the fields of chemistry and physics and has unleashed a flood of interdisciplinary studies which have continued unabated to this day.

Nascido em Sioux City (Iowa) e atualmente com 64 anos, Heeger é professor de física e diretor do Instituto de Polímeros e Sólidos Orgânicos da Universidade da Califórnia em Santa Bárbara.
