His subsequent work treats in various forms and styles the role of the individual in an apparently deterministic universe. Gerhart Hauptmann as naturalist, was the leader of the literary school which flourished especially from 1880 to 1900, a period coinciding with German imperialist expansion and industrialization. The naturalists reflected with photographic and frequently harrowing realism the resultant dislocations in a society that confused material progress with its destiny. Scientific and political theorists drew attention to the formative effects of heredity and environment, the exploitation of workers, the subservient role of women, and the general decay of moral fiber. In treating such themes, the naturalists hoped to alert their contemporaries to the need for reform.

June 6, 1946, Agnetendorf, Ger.), German playwright, poet, and novelist who was a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1912. Hauptmann was born in a then-fashionable Silesian resort town, where his father owned the main hotel. He studied sculpture from 1880 to 1882 at the Breslau Art Institute. He then studied science and philosophy at the university in Jena (1882-83), worked as a sculptor in Rome (1883-84), and studied further in Berlin (1884-85). It was at this time that he decided to make his career as a poet and dramatist. Having married the well-to-do Marie Thienemann in 1885, Hauptmann settled down in Erkner, a rural suburb of Berlin, dabbling in political, theological, and literary studies and associating with a group of scientists, philosophers, and avant-garde writers who were interested in naturalist and socialist ideas. In October 1889 the performance of Hauptmann's social drama Vor Sonnenaufgang Before Dawn ) made him famous overnight, though it shocked the theatregoing public. This starkly realistic tragedy, dealing with contemporary social problems, signaled the end of the rhetorical and highly stylized German drama of the 19th century. Encouraged by the controversy, Hauptmann wrote in rapid succession a number of outstanding dramas on naturalistic themes (heredity, the plight of the poor, the clash of personal needs with societal restrictions) in which he artistically reproduced social reality and common speech. Gerhart Hauptmann Gerhart Hauptmann ist ein hervoragender deutscher Dramatiker des 20. Jahrhunderts und ein Repräsentant des Naturalismus G erhart Hauptmann wurde am 15. November 1862 als Sohn eines Hotelbesitzers in Schlesien geboren. 1877 erlebte Hauptmann mit 15 Jahren den wirtschaftlichen Zusammenbruch des Vaters. 1879 wurde er während seines Aufenthalts als Landwirtschaftshelfer auf dem Gut von Verwandten lungenkrank und war erst 1904 völlig wiederherstellt. Frühzeitg zeigte Hauptmann sein dichterisches Interesse. Er besuchte 1882-82 die Kunst- und Gewerbeschule zu Breslau. Zwischen 1882-88 hörte er Vorlesungen an mehreren deutschen und schweizerischen Universitäten. Nach einer Mittelmeerreise, einem Aufenthalt als freier Bildhauer in Rom und seiner Heirat 1885 wohnte er in Berlin, Zürich und Erkner bei Berlin. Da begann er, seine dichterische Begabung zu Tage zu legen. S eit 1901 lebte Hauptmann mit seiner zweiten Frau, Margarete Marschalk, einer Schauspielerin und Geigerin in Agnetendorf, Kloster auf Hiddensee, in der Südschweiz und an der Riviera. 1907 machte er eine Reise nach Griechenland, die für seine Dichtung von Bedeutung war. 1932 machte er seine zweite Reise nach Amerika, wo er als Repräsentant der deutschen Dichtung gefeiert wurde. "He is not a realist who sporadically suffers from whimsical fits of philosophical romanticizing but a realist in good style, which is to say that from beginning to the end he is always the same." (Theodor Fontane, Sämtliche Werke, 1969) Hauptmann was born in Obersalzbrunn (now Szczawno Drój), a fashionable resort in Eastern Germany. His father was the hotel owner Robert Hauptmann and mother Marie (Straehler) Hauptmann. After failing at the gymnasium in Breaslau, Gerhart was sent to his uncle's estate. There he became aware of the Pietism and learned to know the peasants with whom he worked. He then entered the art academy in Breslau, intending to become a sculptor, and studied history at the University of Jena (1882-1883). From 1883 to 1884 Hauptmann studied art in Rome and wrote a romantic poem based on the myth of Prometheus. Ill health forced him to return to Germany. In 1885 he married Marie Thienemann, an heiress to a fortune, whom he had met in 1881, and settled in Berlin. Marie admired her husband, but did not much understand literature and was devastated when Gerhart's attention strayed. However, her wealth gave him the freedom to start his career as a writer. In 1885 he set up a home with his wife in the little lakeside village of Erkner, and became convinced of the anti-romantic and scientific necessity of depicting life as it is. His early stories 'Fasching' (1887) and 'Bahnwärter Thiel' (1988) were naturalistic tales of simply people.

El primer drama de Hauptmann, Vor Sonnenaufgang Antes del amanecer ) inaugur³ el movimiento naturalista en la literatura alemana moderna, le conquist³ la enemistad de los cr­ticos ortodoxos y el apoyo entusiasta de los escritores alemanes j³venes.
