Hassel, Odd (1897-1981)
20th Century Born: Oslo (Norway), 17 May 1897
Died: Oslo (Norway), 11 May 1981 After graduating in 1920 from the University of Oslo, Hassel studied in France, Italy and Germany and received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Berlin in 1924. Next year he returned to the University of Oslo where he became, in 1934, the first professor of physical chemistry in Norway. Hassel retired from this post after 30 years of service in 1964. Hassel was one of the early pioneers in the study of molecular structures and laid down the foundations for conformational analysis. Through measurements of electric dipole moments and gas phase electron diffraction he was able to establish the conformations of several alicyclic hydrocarbons, for instance, those of cyclohexane. Hassel received together with D.H.R. Barton the 1969 Nobel prize in chemistry for the development of the concept of conformation and its application in chemistry.

    Odd Hassel - Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry 1969
    Odd Hassel shared the 1969 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Sir Derek H.R. Barton for his groundbreaking work in the structure and transformation of organic molecules. Hassel was particularly interested in cyclohexanes and cyclohexane derivatives. As part of this investigation, he conducted a series of dipole moment measurements, and is among the pioneers in determining molecular structure in the gaseous phase with the aid of electron diffraction. Hassel continued his work during World War II, but was arrested in 1943 and imprisoned until November 1944. He resumed his scientific work after the war. Besides the Nobel Prize, Hassel has received numerous honorary awards. He was honorary doctor at the University of Copenhagen and in Stockholm, and member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Scientists as well as corresponding societies in Sweden and Denmark. Hassel was a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Chemical Society of London. He was awarded the prestigious Gunnerus medal in 1964 and in the same year was the first to receive the Guldberg-Waage medal. Odd Hassel died in 1981.

    Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Odd Hassel The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1969 Odd Hassel was born in Kristiania (now Oslo), Norway on May 17, 1897. His father was Ernst Hassel, a physician who specialized in gynaecology, his mother Mathilde nee Klaveness. In 1915 he entered the University of his native town where he studied mathematics and physics with chemistry as his chief subject and graduated as a cand. real. in 1920. Work on the sensibilisation of silver halides by organic dyes led to the detection of what is now termed the "absorption indicators". After moving to Berlin, Hassel worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Dahlem, carrying out X-ray crystallographic work. Hassel's main interest during the first years of his teaching at the University of Oslo dealt with inorganic chemistry, but from 1930 onwards his work was concentrated on problems connected with molecular structure of cyclohexane and its derivatives and other substances containing six-membered rings related to that of cyclohexane. Hassel has received many awards that include The Guldberg-Waage Medal from the Norwegian Chemical Society and the Gunnerus Medal from the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize In Chemistry jointly with Derek H. R. Barton "for their contributions to the development of the concept of conformation and its application in chemistry".

    Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Derek H. R. Barton The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1969 Derek Harold Richard Barton was born on September 8, 1918, son of William Thomas and Maude Henrietta Barton. In 1938 he entered Imperial College, University of London, where he obtained his B. Sc. Hons. (1st. class) in 1940 and Ph. D. (Organic Chemistry) in 1942. In 1950, in a brief paper in Experienta entitled "The Conformation of the Steroid Nucleus", Professor Barton showed that organic molecules in general and steroid molecules in particular could be assigned a preferred conformation based upon results accumulated by chemical physicists, in particular by Odd Hassel. It was demonstrated that the chemical and physical properties of a molecule could be interpreted in terms of a preferred conformation. In molecules containing fixed rings, such as the steroids, there resulted a simple relationship between configuration and conformation, such that configurations could be predicted once the possible conformations for the products of a reaction could be analyzed. Thus the subject "conformational analysis" began. Conformational analysis is useful in the elucidation of configuration, in the planning or organic synthesis, and in the analysis of reaction mechanisms.

    DISCIPLES::
    Odd Hassel (1897 - 1981) Norwegian physical chemist who conducted great amounts of research in understanding the three-dimensional structure of molecules. Intrigued with these molecules, Hassel used many different ways to study them. He was most fascinated with a compound called Cydohexane (C6H12). Scientists knew that the carbon atoms in this compound were arranged in a ring structure, but they could not determine the exact spatial orientation of each atom. Hassel determined the molecular arrangement of cydohexane. His work on molecular shape enabled scientists to better understand the behavior of all molecules containing rings of atoms; he also helped chemists understand that a molecule's shape can determine its physical and chemical properties.
