American physicist, who worked on nuclear strategy as a military analyst (1948-61). Later, he became known as a futurist making controversial studies of nuclear warfare in his books, including his provocative analysis of nuclear war in On Thermonuclear War (1960) and his predictions of the probability and survivability of nuclear war in Thinking About the Unthinkable (1962). He held that since it might be possible to survive a nuclear war, it was essential to plan to do just that. Kahn founded the influential Hudson Institute

OCTOBER 12 - BIRTHS Sir Arthur Harden
(source)
Born 12 Oct 1865
English biochemist and corecipient (with Hans von Euler-Chelpin) of the 1929 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for work on the fermentation of sugar and the enzyme action involved. Harden continued the work of Eduard Buchner who had discovered that such reactions can take place in the absence of living cells. Harden demonstrated that the activity of yeast enzymes included both large protein molecules and essential coenzymes - small nonprotein molecules. This was the first evidence for the existence of coenzymes. Harden also discovered that yeast enzymes are not broken down and lost with time, but that the gradual loss of activity with time can be reversed by the addition of phosphates, which are now known to play a vital part in biochemical reactions. Theodor Heinrich Boveri
(source)
Born 12 Oct 1862; died 15 Oct 1915.
German cytologist whose work with roundworm eggs proved that chromosomes are separate, continuous entities within the nucleus of a cell. He emphasized that they were organized structures. When Boveri first began his work, it was not yet known whether each chromosome contained factors responsible for the total development or whether each chromosome differed from others in being responsible for only particular hereditary features. Boveri's discoveries made it clear that certain chromosomes were responsible for certain characteristics. Around 1887, Boveri discovered a small structure that connects the chromosomes during cell division. Boveri called it the centrosome and demonstrated it provided the division centers for the dividing egg cell and all its offspring.

The Planned Planting of Piltdown: Who? Why? Wilton Marion Krogman in Washburn and McCown, Human Evolution: Biosocial Perspectives For over 40 years the image of Piltdown confused our understanding of human evolution. Countless hours were wasted in descriptions and discussion of the "fossil. " Krogman summarizes these events from discovery to ultimate solution. He tells us of the individuals he knew personally, of their involvement in the history of this most infamous fabrication, and how the Piltdown forgery influenced the whole interpretation of human evolution. Today, with careful excavation methods, radiometric dating, and the existence of series of fossils, no single specimen could be so influential. The Piltdown Men. The central character is, of course, Piltdown I, announced triumphantly on December 18, 1912, and devastatingly exposed as a hoax 41 years later. In his book Millar ranges far afield in discussing and elaborating the climate of human paleontology up to 1912. He goes well beyond 1912 in his references to other human fossils, but such material is almost a non sequitur. The focus, as I see it, is why and how Piltdown I was initially accepted as a legitimate find somewhere along the line of hominid evolution. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND evolution; Cuvier's "catastrophism" was a rationalization of apparent successive geological epochs. In 1891-1892 Dubois uncovered the "ape-man"

Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

    The Man
with the Watches Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
At five o’clock upon the evening of the 18 th of March in the year already mentioned a train left Euston Station for Manchester. It was a rainy, squally day, which grew wilder as it progressed, so it was by no means the weather in which anyone would travel who was not driven to do so by necessity. The train, however, is a favourite one among Manchester business men who are returning from town, for it does the journey in four hours and twenty minutes, with only stoppages upon the way. In spite of the inclement evening it was, therefore, fairly well filled upon the occasion of which I speak. the guard of the train was a tried servant of the company – a man who had worked for twenty-two years without blemish or complaint. His name was John Palmer. "Now, then, sir, look sharp, the train is going." said he. "First class," the man answered. The guard turned the handle of the nearest door. In the carriage, which he had opened, there sat a small man with a cigar in his mouth. His appearance seemed to have impressed itself upon the guard’s memory, for he was prepared, afterwards, to describe or to identify him. He was a man of thirty-four or thirty-five years of age, dressed in some grey material, sharp nosed, alert, with a ruddy, weather-beaten face, and a small, closely cropped black beard. He glanced up as the door was opened. The tall man paused with his foot upon the step. "This is a smoking compartment. The lady dislikes smoke," said he, looking around at the guard.
