Hunger
Nobel Prize Winners (1920)
Author Info: Knut Hamsun
Knut Hamsun's semi autobiographical account of his early years as an aspiring writer is the sine qua non of starving artist literature. It combines something of the manic intensity of Dostoevskey's portrayal of Raskalnikov, with the first person narrative and near hallucinatory vision of Charles Bukowskithe visions brought on by starvation rather than alcohol in this caseand is told in the spare, punchy prose that the author learned while working in America. The message of the book seems to be that the experience of poverty and hunger are a necessary fuel to stoke the author's artistic fires. It remains for the reader to determine whether Hamsun has been blessed with a universal revelation, or merely a personal insight. The idea of suffering for art and of inspiration coming from hallucination have certainly been influentialwe think of Faulkner, Hemingway, Henry Miller, William S. Burroughs, Mailer, etc., as writers who sought the profound in a bottle, a needle or a bimbo. However, other than Bukowski and a little bit of Hunter Thompson, it is hard to think of many authors whose dissipation has helped produce much that's worth reading. Significantly, the good stuff that even they produced details their adventures while under the influence, not any revelations about the broader world that resulted from said mind altering. But the danger here is that such authors tend to risk self-indulgenceremarkably few writers can make their own debauchery into interesting proseand often sacrifice coherence.

Knut Hamsun Born August 4th 1859 as Knut Pedersen in Lom in the Gudbransdalen valley of central Norway.
Writers who are truly original do not set out to fabricate new forms of expression, or to invent themes merely for the sake of appearing new. They attain their originality through extraordinary sincerity, by daring to give everything of themselves, their most secret thoughts and idiosyncrasies.
Knut Hamsun’s genius is totally a product of self-searching and introspection. This became immediately apparent in his first novel, Hunger . People do not love alike; neither do they starve alike. Knut Hamsun took the basic human experience of hunger and made it such a highly individualistic sensation that everything common dropped away from it. The hero is a literary neophite, highly nervous, virtually bordering on madness. In Hamsun’s work we see the city of Christiania, we feel its physical and spiritual climate, Hamsun mentions names of streets and buildings, but at the same time the reader realizes that the hero is as far removed from his surroundings as if he were in a foreign land.
His hunger can be said to be entirely antisocial. He is starving, not because he cannot find a job in the city or on the farm, but mainly because he is obstinately determined to live from his writing although he is just a beginner. He is hungry both for bread and for inspiration. He is lonely, not because he cannot make friends, but because he has no patience for others. He suffers the shame of those who must rise above their fellow creatures or perish.

Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag Autorenportrait Knut Hamsun

A short biography of Knut Hamsun (August 04, 1860 – February 19, 1952): Probably one of the most controversial figures in Norwegian literature, Knud Pedersen Hamsund (1860-1952) had earned an equal share of bouquets and brickbats during his lifetime and afterwards.
By Anirban Ray Choudhury, 2/16/2004 Probably one of the most controversial figures in Norwegian literature, Knud Pedersen Hamsund (1860-1952) had earned an equal share of bouquets and brickbats during his lifetime and afterwards. Born in Lom (on August 04, 1860) in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in central Norway, the fourth son to Peder and Tora Pedersen, Knut’s life as a young boy was not very remarkable. When he was four, the family moved to the harsh land of Hamaroy, where circumstances soon called upon him to serve as an errand boy to a shoemaker. Toiling for his daily bread and devoid of any meaningful friendships, the future Nobel Laureate turned to the written word for solace and company. Two books and umpteen jobs later, he moved to Oslo (erstwhile Christiania). It was perhaps here that the protagonist of Hunger, his most widely read novella, began taking shape. As a young writer ( Hamsun was nineteen when he moved into Christiania) trying to make his mark in the pre hundred-dollars-per-word days, he learned first hand about perhaps the hardest fact of life – hunger. Writing articles occasionally for local newspapers, working off and on as teacher, streetcar attendant and even a farmhand, Hamsun during this time saw life at its trickiest, yet he tried to stand tall out of sheer vanity. And this angst and arrogance was reflected in the 1890 novel Sult (Hunger), which narrates the tale of a young, impoverished author who would not let go of his pride even while acute poverty percolates into reason leaving a trail of gnawing hunger in its wake.
