Born in Lom on August 4, 1859, Hamsun, with no previous formal education, enrolled at the University of Christiania (now Oslo), planning to become a journalist. He soon gave up this attempt and immigrated to the United States where he worked at various occupations and wrote, chiefly in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 1888 he returned finally to Norway and thereafter gave his full time to writing. Hamsun rose to the front rank of Scandinavian writers with the novel Hunger (1890; trans. 1899), a work dealing with the psychological effects of starvation. It was followed by a number of other novels, including

Knut Hamsun (31 years old) in Knut Hamsun August 4 February 19 ) was a leading Norwegian author, born in Lom under the name of Knud Pedersen. He first received acclaim for his novel Sult , translated as Hunger . The semi-autobiographical work described a young writer's descent into near madness as a result of hunger and poverty. In many ways, the novel presages the writings of Franz Kafka and other twentieth-century novelists, who explored the madness of the contemporary human condition. The book has since become one of the most influential novels of the 20th century. The work that followed it, Mysteries , was perhaps his masterpiece. Other important works by Hamsun include Pan and The Growth of the Soil , for which he received the Nobel Prize in literature in Despite his immense popularity in Norway and around the world, Hamsun's reputation waned considerably because of his support of Vidkun Quisling 's Nazi regime during World War II . Following a meeting with Joseph Goebbels in , he sent Goebbels his Nobel Prize medal as a gift. Hamsun also met with

Knut Hamsun
The Growth of the Soil
Knut Hamsun By W. W. Worster
Reprinted from The Fortnightly Review, December, 1920. Those readers are, perhaps, most fortunate who come upon such a book as this without foretaste or preparation. To the mind under spell of an asthetic or emotional appeal, the steps that went to make it, the stages whereby the author passed, are as irrelevant as the logarithms that went to build an aeroplane. Yet it is only by knowledge of such steps that the achievement can be fully understood. And this from the pen of the man who wrote Sult, Mysterier, and Pan. His Nordland origin is in itself significant; it means an environment of month-long nights and concentrated summers, in which all feelings are intensified, and love and dread and gratitude and longing are nearer and deeper than in milder and more temperate regions, where elemental opposites are, as it were, reciprocally diluted. In 1890, at the age of thirty, Hamsun attracted attention by the publication of Sult (Hunger). Sult is a record of weeks of starvation in a city; the semi-delirious confession of a man whose physical and mental faculties have slipped beyond control. He speaks and acts irrationally, and knows it, watches himself at his mental antics and takes himself to task for the same. And he asks himself: Is it a sign of madness? It might seem so. The extraordinary associations, the weird fancies and bizarre impulses that are here laid bare give an air of convincing verisimilitude to the supposed confessions of a starving journalist. But, as a matter of fact, Hamsun has no need of extraneous influences to invest his characters with originality. Starving or fed, they can be equally erratic. This is seen in his next book, Mysterier.

There are those who would hold that the name of Knut Hamsun should appear prominently on any list of "great Norwegians" for he was a Norwegian, and his literary works reflected genius and artistry. It is true that he brought credit to his homeland in 1920 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature (for "The Growth of the Soil" penned in 1917). But it is also true that as years went on, he became devoted to the cause of the Nazis, and made a gift of his Nobel Prize Medal to Hitler lieutenant Joseph Goebbels. When the Nazis barged into Norway, establishing a puppet government, nearly every Norwegian reviled at the occupation and discerned clearly the evil in the cause of the occupiers. Hamsun welcomed the invading troops. At the war's end, Hamsun, once a hero to Norway, was convicted in connection with his pro-Nazi activities and heavily fined being spared imprisonment undoubtedly in deference to his literary contributions and age. While the works of Hamsun may be entitled to reverence for their greatness, can the
