EDUCATIONAL Allvar Gullstrand , eldest son of Dr. Pehr Alfred Gullstrand, Principal Municipal Medical Officer, and his wife Sofia Mathilda He occupied this post until 1913. As from 1914 onwards he held a Personal Professorship in Physical and Physiological Optics at Uppsala University. He was appointed Emeritus Professor in 1927. He was entirely self-taught in the fields covering his most important work (geometric and physiological optics). The basis of the science he developed was laid in 1890 in his thesis Bidrag till astigmatismens teori (Contribution to the theory of astigmatism). The complete proof of this theory is found in the following three works: (General theory of monochromatic aberrations and their immediate significance for ophthalmology), 1900, which received awards from the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and the Swedish Medical Association; Die reelle optische Abbildung (The true optical image), 1906; and Die optische Abbildung in heterogenen Medien und die Dioptrik der Kristallinse des Menschen (The optical image in heterogeneous media and the dioptrics of the human crystalline lens), 1908, which was awarded the Centenary Gold Medal of the Swedish Medical Association. Home Medi News Medical Tidbits Interesting Topics ... Ask a Question Allvar Gullstrand Allvar Gullstrand was a Swedish doctor who invented Slit lamp for illuminating and examining eye. It is still used by ophthalmologists. He obtained his PhD in ophthalmology from the university of Uppsala and became a professor there. Gullstrand did intensive research on the structure of eye and function of the eye, especially into how it refracts light. He studied the lens extensively and to find out how it adjusts itself to focus on both near and distant objects called accommodation. He was able to show with experiments that the refractive power of the lens increased during accommodation and was 50 % greater than had been previously calculated. He described the structure and function of cornea in detail. He also devised improved corrective lenses for use after cataract surgery. Gullstrand was also interested in corneal astigmatism in which light is refracted unevenly due to the irregular shape of the eye ball. He was the first to use precise mathematical calculations to determine the power of the lenses used to correct refractive errors. Allvar Gullstrand received Nobel Prize for his work on Dioptrics in 1911.
