Interview
The winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Roger Guillemin, in Italy to participate in the initiative "Ten Nobel Prizes for the Future: Science, economics and ethics for the next century", organised by Hypothesis, talks about the relationship between art and science and the new prospects opened by the application of new technologies.
Biography
Roger Guillemin, father of neuroendocrinology, world renowned humanist scientist, and winner of the Nobel Prize in 1977 (with Rosalyn S. Yalow and Andrew V. Schally) for his work on the physiological control of the secretion of the pituitary gland, is now also widely recognised as an artist. Born in Dijon in France on 11 January 1924, he graduated from the medical school in Dijon in 1943 and received the M.D. degree from the Faculté de Médecine of Lyon in 1949, where he worked for about two years in the general anatomy laboratory. While at Lyon he met Hans Selye, an expert on stress, and followed him to Montreal. After completing his thesis in Lyon, he returned to America, where he developed an interest in the history of medicine. He obtained a Ph.D. in physiology in 1953 and joined the staff of the Department of Physiology at the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where he taught physiology until 1970.

Interviste

Roger C.L. Guillemin was born in Dijon, France in 1924. He received his medical degree in 1949 from the University of Lyon, where his interest in endocrinology began. He subsequently moved to the University of Montreal, where he received his Ph.D. in 1953. Guillemin then joined the Department of Physiology at the Baylor University College of Medicine in Houston, where he remained until 1970, pursuing his studies on the hormonal control of the pituitary gland, in particular the hormones produced by the hypothalamus, and on neurotransmitters such as endorphins. It was for this work that he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine (with A.V. Shally) in 1977. In 1970 he moved to the Salk Institute at La Jolla, California, where he founded the Laboratories for Neuroendocrinology, before going to the Whittier Institute for Diabetes and Endocrinology in La Jolla in 1989. He is also Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego. His studies have led to the isolation of a variety of hormones, including somatocrinin or growth hormone-releasing factor, somatostatin, which is fundamental to the understanding of diabetes, and a number of the hormones that regulate female sexual development.

French Chemists Guillemin, Roger Charles Louis , 1924-, French-American physiologist, b. Dijon, France. Educated in France, he fought for the resistance during World War II. He taught primarily at Baylor Univ. (1953-70), until he became a researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (Calif.). Guillemin isolated and synthesized the hormones produced by the hypothalamus gland. These hormones regulate the pituitary gland, which governs other glands that regulate such body functions as reproduction and emotional responses. He also discovered endorphins, a class of hormonal substances. His work added new dimensions to the study of the brain's control over the body's chemistry. In 1977, Guillemin shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Andrew Schally and Rosalyn Yalow . Dausset, Jean , 1916-, French immunologist. He was the laboratory director of the National Blood Transfusion Center and was a professor at the Univ. of Paris (1958-77) and the Collège de France. He identified a gene complex (human leucocyte A complex) that accounted for different immunological reactions to blood transfusions in humans. This was similar to the H-2 complex in mice identified by George Snell . Dausset, Snell, and Baruj Benacerraf shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning the relationship between genetics and the immune system.

Anxiety-Panic History
c. 1970 In the 1970s, biological psychiatry came roaring back on stage, displacing psychoanalysis as the dominant paradigm and returning psychiatry to the fold of the other medical specialties. c. 1970 The social and political upheaval of the 1960s and 1970s, with its associated drug abuse, further slowed down social acceptance of even helpful medicine that influenced nervous system diseases. c. 1970 Dr. Eugene Redmond of Yale demonstrated the effect certain parts of the brain have on the behavior and emotional reaction to fear. He proposed from these studies that panic and fear result from the hyperactivity of [neurons in the locus coeruleus]. c. 1970 The best evidence that [stress-induced] analgesia is a real phenomenon is the neurochemistry that has been discovered to underlie it. The tale begins in the 1970s, with the subject in which every ambitious, cutting-edge neurochemist of the time was interested - the various opiate drugs that were being used recreationally in vast numbers: heroin, morphine, opium. All those compounds have similar chemical structures and are made in certain plants in similar ways. In the early 1970s, three different groups of neurochemists almost simultaneously demonstrated that these opiate drugs bound to specific opiate receptors in the brain. And these receptors tended to to be located in the parts of the brain that process pain perception. [in 1971, Andrew Schally published the next hypothalamic hormone, and Roger Guillemin published 2-months later.]
