Mikhail Gorbachev
The last Soviet leader by Rit Nosotro Gorbachev moved steadily up the political ranks. After being promoted to the regional committee of the Communist Youth League in 1961, he transferred to the CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) where he served faithfully, working hard and catching the attention of regional first secretary. He continued to be promoted every two years or so because of his hard work and his connections with high ranking Soviet officials. He experimented with ways of improving worker efficiency and living conditions. In 1978 Gorbachev moved to Moscow to take up the position of Central Committee secretary, with the responsibility of caring for Soviet agriculture. 1979 found him a non-voting member of the famous Politburo, the top policy making body of the Soviet government. At the comparatively young age of 49, Gorbachev was promoted to full member of the Politburo, the youngest person to have that honor. Gorbachev, 1985 Colton/Picture SearchBlack Star in full MIKHAIL SERGEYEVICH GORBACHEV (b. March 2, 1931, Privolye, Stavropol kray, Russia, U.S.S.R.), Soviet official, the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) from 1985 to 1991 and president of the Soviet Union in 1990-91. His efforts to democratize his country's political system and decentralize its economy led to the downfall of communism and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. In part because he ended the Soviet Union's postwar domination of eastern Europe, Gorbachev was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1990. Gorbachev was the son of Russian peasants in Stavropol territory ( kray ) in southwestern Russia. He joined the Komsomol (Young Communist League) in 1946 and drove a combine harvester at a state farm in Stavropol for the next four years. He proved a promising Komsomol member, and in 1952 he entered the law school of Moscow State University and became a member of the Communist Party. He graduated with a degree in law in 1955 and went on to hold a number of posts in the Komsomol and regular party organizations in Stavropol, rising to become first secretary of the regional party committee in 1970. Gorbachev was named a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1971, and he was appointed a party secretary of agriculture in 1978. He became a candidate member of the Politburo in 1979 and a full member in 1980. He owed a great deal of his steady rise in the party to the patronage of Mikhail Suslov, the leading party ideologue. Over the course of Yury Andropov's 15-month tenure (1982-84) as general secretary of the Communist Party, Gorbachev became one of the Politburo's most highly active and visible members; and, after Andropov died and Konstantin Chernenko became general secretary in February 1984, Gorbachev became a likely successor to the latter. Chernenko died on March 10, 1985, and the following day the Politburo elected Gorbachev general secretary of the CPSU. Upon his accession, he was still the youngest member of the Politburo.

Gorbachev and President Ronald Reagan at the Geneva Summit on November 21, 1985. For most of the 20th century, the United States and the Soviet Union grappled for power, sweeping most of the world into the conflict between "communism" and "democracy."
Soviet president Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev's efforts to democratize the Soviet Union's political system and decentralize its economy eventually led to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Upon becoming General Secretary of the Community Party in 1985, Gorbachev quickly set about resuscitating the Soviet Union's economy, which had grown stagnant during Leonid Brezhnev's term in power (1964-1982). He called for rapid technological modernization and increased worker productivity, and he tried to make the weighty Soviet bureaucracy more efficient.
From 1987-1988, Gorbachev initiated glasnost ("openness"), which called for increased freedoms of expression and information, and perestroika ("restructuring"), which instigated the first attempts to democratize the Soviet government.

Gorbachev
By Elina Grossman Gorbachev was a man of great honor and pride. He was one of the world's greatest leaders of all times, with great causes. He gave Russia a new reason to celebrate, and led the famous perestroika. His name will always be celebrated in Russia, and the people of Russia will always give thanks to him. Gorbachev will never be forgotten. On a bright spring morning of March 2 1931, a new baby came into this world that was going to change the world, and no one even knew it! His name was Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev . He was born to peasant parents in the village of Privol'noye, in Stravropol, which is a region in southwest Russia. In the 1930's there were a lot of difficulties. The Stalinist era meant terror. Even Gorbachev's grandparents were arrested. Famine also hit many regions. In school he was a model child. He made the highest grades in his classes, and was a very bright boy. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1946. When Gorbachev turned nineteen years old, he was admitted into law school and Moscow State University. (1950) One of the only reasons he was accepted was because of his status as a probationary member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. (Which was very rare at his young age) He was finally accepted to be a full member of the Communist Party in 1952. That year he also graduated from Moscow State University, majoring in law. In college Gorbachev met his future wife Raisa Titorenko . She was bright, independent, and a very attractive young lady. She studied philosophy in college, and Gorbachev was intrigued. He got married to Raisa in 1953 and in 1956, their first daughter, Irina was born.

Gorbachev was instrumental in the USSR's collapse
By BBC News Online's Stephen Mulvey For Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev it must have been a difficult decade - a man of huge ambitions and huge achievements, but a political corpse. Living out a ghostly life on lecture tours, book signings and Pizza Hut commercials, he was powerless to influence the erratic rule of his arch-rival Boris Yeltsin - a man he neither likes nor respects.
The man who set out to revitalise the flagging Soviet Union ended up leading it headlong to destruction
There's been plenty of time to reflect on what went wrong - from the euphoric early days of perestroika to crisis and collapse. His memoirs - published in 1995 - are, among other things, an effort to distribute blame. Historians have been doing the same, picking over the Gorbachev era with a fine-tooth comb, exhaustively and sometimes gleefully cataloguing the mistakes of the last Soviet leader, from his failure to submit to democratic election, to his obstinate refusal to heed repeated warnings of the threat from the hardline communist right.

BBC World Service reporter in Moscow
There was a touch of 'Sunset Boulevard' about meeting the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev.
Gorbachev: Largely ignored by the people of his own country. In the words of Norma Desmond, the fading actress in the Hollywood movie: "I am big. It's the pictures that got smaller." If Mr Gorbachev were to use similar words, he might have a fair point. No leader since Vladimir Lenin changed his country so profoundly. And yet, despite his achievements, at 72 and in good mental and physical health, Mr Gorbachev is largely ignored by the people of his own country. Blame Yeltsin Mr Gorbachev's faithful assistant, Pavel Palazchenko, who translated for him throughout the great power-summits of the 1980s, likes to refer to his boss as "The President".
