Golgi, 1906 By courtesy of the Wellcome Trustees (b. July 7, 1843/44, Corteno, Italyd. Jan. 21, 1926, Pavia), Italian physician and cytologist whose investigations into the fine structure of the nervous system earned him (with the Spanish histologist ) the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine After his arrival at the University of Pavia (1876), Golgi found and described (1880) the point (now known as the Golgi tendon spindle or Golgi tendon organ) at which sensory nerve fibres end in rich branchings encapsulated within a tendon. He also discovered (1883) the presence in nerve cells of an irregular network of fibrils (small fibres), vesicles (cavities), and granules, now known as the Golgi complex or Golgi apparatus. The Golgi complex is found in all cells except bacteria and plays an important role in the modification and transport of proteins within the cell. Turning to the study of malaria (1885-93), Golgi found that the two types of intermittent malarial fevers (tertian, occurring every other day, and quartan, occurring every third day) are caused by different species of the protozoan parasite Plasmodium and that the paroxysms of fever coincide with release of the parasite's spores from red blood cells.

DR. CAMILLO GOLGI
Born in Corteno (Brescia), Italy, Golgi received his education at PAVIA (Italy) and then became assistant to the great Cesar Lombroso at the Institute di Patologia Generale. His work on pellagra early and psammomas later brought him great recognition but the development of the Golgi method to stain neuroglia achieved for him permanent fame. His studies on gliomas were monumental. Together with Santiago Ramon of Cajal (1852-1934) when he even denunciated, they jointly received the Nobel Prize in 1906. Return to the index

Camillo Golgi
Camillo Golgi 7. Juli in Corteno Italien 21.

The Neuron and the Physiologist: A Biographical Sketch of Camillo Golgi Lindsey Hulbert Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals, Department of Animal Science and Food Technology Texas Tech University, Lubbock 79409-2141
ABSTRACT
The objective of this biographical sketch is to give a brief outline of Camillo Golgi’s life and major contributions to the science of physiology and anatomy. In Golgi’s lifespan from 1843 to 1926, he completed medical school, clarified the structure of a neuron, discovered the sensory innervation of the tendon, discovered and named the Golgi apparatus in the cell and many other great accomplishments. He and Santiago Ramón y Cajal also won a Nobel Prize for their neurological findings. He also was a humanitarian and educator; Golgi was an outstanding hospital physician, and a life senator for the University of Pavia. At this university he transformed an empty palazzo into the Institute of Comparative Anatomy and Physiology. Keywords: Camillo Golgi, neurohistology, Golgi apparatus
Introduction
From a humble beginning, Camillo Golgi was destined for science. He was born on July 7, 1843/44 in Conteno, Italy (Britannica 1997). His father practiced medicine in a mountain village in Lombardy (Mazzarello 1996). Golgi attended primary, middle, then medical school in Pavia, receiving is degree by the age of 22 (Mazzarello 1996). He started working for pathologists, Bizzozero and Mantegazza, in a small laboratory. He even converted his own apartment kitchen into a working laboratory while working as chief physician at a hospital in Abbiategrosso. Even though Golgi was a shy person, he fell in love and married Bizzozero’s 20-year-old niece Lina (Mazzarello 1996). His modest, yet educated background was just the right formula for a future of great discoveries.

Camillo Golgi (1844-1926) was born in Corteno, in the province of Brescia, Italy. Golgi began his psychiatric and research career after receiving a degree in Medicine from the University of Pavia in 1865 and dedicated himself to the study of cellular biology in order to understand the function of the human organism and causes of disease. His research on disease states included pellagra, malaria, and a variety of classical mental illnesses, which he studied using clinical and family history data. Golgi can be considered among the first who sought a link between neuroscience and psychiatry. He is one in the great figures of the history of the life sciences and the study of the nervous system in particular. Golgi's main research interest was the microscopic anatomy of the nervous system. He developed an original histologic method for visualization nerve fibers and neurons (he developed several stains that are still used today). He described morphologic features of glial cells and showed the relationship to their prolongation in blood vessels. More than one hundred years ago, he discovered the cellular organelle responsible for the secretion of proteins (Golgi's Apparatus) which were identified as the parasitic cause of malaria and its plasmid development cycle. In 1906, Golgi was the co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, making him the first Italian to receive this award. Curator: Julie Heath and Jacque Havelka

Message ID: 848105285.Cb The Golgi Complex (or Golgi Apparatus , or Golgi Body ) is a cytoplasmic structure composed of multiple cisternae (pools of solution surounded by membranes) arranged to look like a stack of pancakes hovering over the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). The Golgi Complex can be subdivided into three principal parts - cis medial , and trans - ba sed on proximity to the ER. The cis- and trans- Golgi stacks look discontinuous and irregular as vesicles are constantly joining and leaving, so they are usually referred to as the cis Golgi network (CGN) and trans Golgi netwo rk (TGN), respectively. The medial Golgi can have any number of cisternae, which are referred to collectively as the medial stacks. The function of the Golgi Complex is to modify proteins and then target them to specific sites in the cell. As proteins are being made through the translation of mRNA on Ribosomes, they are identified by amino acid "tags" which tell the cell where the protein belongs. Many proteins have a

Preliminary Announcement Stemming from the initiative of a cultural association in Camillo Golgi's birth village (Corteno, now Corteno-Golgi, in the province of Brescia, Italy), a symposium on Golgi's legacy, entitled "Camillo Golgi and the Neurosciences," already announced at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in New Orleans, will be held in Boario Terme, not far from Corteno and near Brescia, on April 17 and 18, 1998 [N.b.: dates changed to 16-18 April], and will include an excursion to Golgi's birth village. The preliminary program includes, at the moment, the following speakers:
  • Paolo Mazzarello (Golgi's biographer, from Pavia) who will talk about Golgi's life
  • Giorgio Macchi (Catholic University of Rome): Golgi as clinical neuropathologist
  • Pierfranco Spano (University of Brescia): Lombroso and Golgi
  • Gunnar Grant (Karolinska Institutet): Retzius and Golgi
  • Javier De Felipe (Cajal Institute, Madrid): Cajal and Golgi
