. The work elucidated many fundamental aspects of cell biology such as the role of coated pits in endocytosis, the itinerary of proteins internalized by receptor-mediated endocytosis, and the steps in the post-translational processing of plasma membrane glycoproteins. Michael Brown and Joseph Goldstein upon learning that they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1985. More recently, Brown and Goldstein have continued their outstanding research in cholesterol metabolism by elucidating the mechanism by which sterol responsive genes are transcriptionally regulated. They have shown that they are activated by sterol responsive element binding proteins (SREBP's) which, unlike any other transcription factors studied to date, are membrane bound and are released through two distinct proteolytic cleavages. One of these is inhibited by sterols, thus explaining how sterols inhibit the transcription of sterol-responsive genes. References
Their Nobel address article, although published in 1986, is still a beautifully-written description of the work leading to the discovery of the LDL receptor pathway:

Goldstein Delivers 3rd Annual Lerner Lecture
Nobel Laureate Joseph L. Goldstein, M.D., delivered the Third Annual Lerner Lecture in Bunts Auditorium. Dr. Goldstein addressed SREBPs: Activators of Lipid Synthesis and Monitors of Membrane Production Dr. Goldstein's recent research interests focus on Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Proteins (SREBPs) and the mechanism by which they regulate cholesterol metabolism at the molecular, cellular and whole body levels. SREBPs are membrane-bound basic/helix-loop-helix/leucine zipper (bHLH-Zip) transcription factors that regulate the synthesis and uptake of cholesterol and fatty acids in animal cells. Dr. Goldstein has detailed the activity of two SREBPs regulated by cellular sterol content. His address will delineate the feedback mechanism governing SREBP activity and the role of SREBPs in assuring steady-state supply and the prevention of overaccumulation of cholesterol and unsaturated fatty acids. SREBPs appear to be the key molecules in the pathway controlling lipid composition of cell membranes. In a joint award shared with his long-time friend and research partner Michael S. Brown, M.D., Dr. Goldstein received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1985 for discoveries of the regulation of cholesterol metabolism. After receiving the Nobel Prize, the researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center credited scientists from a diverse array of disciplines who participated in key experiments in genetics, cell biology, molecular pharmacology, electron microscopy, nuclear medicine, immunology, surgery and medicine. Drs. Goldstein and Brown developed a model for integrating multi-disciplinary approaches to unravel the mysteries of human biology, pathologies and molecular medicine.

Honorary Degrees Awarded to Six Pioneering Scientists David Bryant Mumford The honorary degree recipients, their presenters and others posed with President Levine for a group photograph. It is my honor to introduce to the Rockefeller community the great mathematician David B. Mumford. Mumford probably has had two careers. For the first 20 years he was an algebraic geometer, and since then he's been a theorist of the neurophysiology of vision. And I doubt that I will resolve for you how such a transformation occurred. I'm not sure I know precisely of course, but I would like to say something about the circumstances, because this is an unusual moment in which we're honoring a mathematician. I think mathematicians are a bit of a novelty to the audience of Rockefeller. Algebraic geometry means that you think about geometrical things, maybe curves and the likes of that, and how you may see them by looking at them in different ways. You do this by using the tools of algebra. It means of course that you come to understand something about what curves really look like, and what the things are inside of them. This work of Mumford's is exceptional and well recognized. Toward the end of this work in algebraic geometry he received the Fields Medal.

Honorary Degrees Recipients for Convocation 2001 At its Centennial Convocation, The Rockefeller University will award honorary degrees to six scientists who have made important contributions to their respective areas of science. Below are biographies of the recipients.
Presented by Hermann Steller Drosophila revolutionized the study of animal development, will be presented with the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa, for her contributions to the field of biology. She received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work with Eric Wieschaus, in which they conducted a screen for mutations disrupting the formation of the body plan of the Drosophila embryo. The two researchers were able to identify a large number of relevant mutations and sort them into a functional hierarchy, reflecting a stepwise refinement of the body plan. Their work represented the first systematic genetic dissection of the development of an organism, and it inaugurated a new era in developmental biology. Physics Freeman J. Dyson
