  • Developed with UConn and URI an ARPA Manufacturing Education grant ($12.4 million over 2 years). This education grant will allow the introduction of manufacturing throughout the curriculum. Received a NSF infrastructure grant ($2 million total) to Chemical Engineering for the renovation of laboratory space. Two other NSF infrastructure grants were obtained, one for scanning electron microscopes and one for remote vehicle simulation equipment. Developed the funding of a new building for engineering and computer science ($31.5million) through a bond issue of the state. One half of the funds will allow for ~ 30,000+net square feet of laboratory space for Chemical Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering

Score: 0.523 Abstract:
Our research is directed at unraveling the mechanism by which the SREBP pathway regulates cholesterol metabolism at the molecular, cellular, and whole body levels. Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Proteins (SREBPs) are membrane-bound bHLH-Zip transcription factors that regulate the synthesis and uptake of cholesterol and fatty acids in animal cells. Two SREBPs, designated SREBP-1a and SREBP-2, predominate in cultured cells. The activities of both SREBPs are regulated by the sterol content of the cells. When cells are replete with sterols, the SREBPS remain bound to membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and nuclear envelope and are therefore inactive.

Michael S. Brown, Johann Deisenhofer, Alfred G. Gilman, Joseph L. Goldstein and Ferid Murad: Therapeutic cloning ban would hurt research
By MICHAEL S. BROWN, JOHANN DEISENHOFER, ALFRED G. GILMAN, JOSEPH L. GOLDSTEIN and FERID MURAD The Texas Legislature is considering a bill, House Bill 1175, that is meant to address the public's worries about human cloning. Unfortunately, although the measure is well intentioned, it could devastate medical research in Texas. As five Nobel laureates who live and work in Texas, we know firsthand that medical research contributes hundreds of millions of dollars to the state's economy and has produced hundreds of lifesaving treatments. The problem with the anti-cloning bill is that it is far too broad. It could threaten the progress being made in fighting some of the most debilitating diseases known to humankind, closing the door on hope for 100 million Americans. Two committees of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as noted national and international organizations, have concluded that reproductive cloning - creating a baby who is genetically identical to a parent - would constitute unwarranted experimentation on human subjects. For that reason, reproductive cloning should be prohibited, and criminal and civil penalties should be imposed on those who would implant the product of nuclear transplantation into a woman's uterus.

This article is adapted from a lecture presented by Joseph L Goldstein at the 1999 Joint Meeting of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and Association of American Physicians in Chicago, Illinois, USA on April 25, 1999. The George M. Kober Medal, the Association of American Physician's highest honor, has been awarded annually since 1924 to a member of the Association who has made outstanding contributions to the "progress and achievement of the medical sciences." Jean D. Wilson is a born naturalist. He has devoted most of his 45-year career in the medical sciences to understanding sexual differentiation in humans - not to mention dogs, cats, lions, bulls, rabbits, rats, niice, ducks, roosters, opossums, kangaroos, and spotted hyenas. His inspiration came from the greatest naturalist of all time, Charles Darwin. But how is Jean D. Wilson linked to Charles Darwin? THE CHAIN FROM WILSON TO DARWIN: "SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION"
