DESCRIPTIVE GRAMMAR
EXPRESSING REASON, PURPOSE AND CONTRAST
Reason
  • We can begin a clause to give reason with these words:
  • As it was getting late, I decided I should go home.
We must be near the beach,
because I can hear the waves.
You can begin a sentence with because Because everything looked different, I had no idea where to go.
So is also commonly used to express the same meaning: My mother's arrived, so I won't be anle to meet you on Thursday after all.
Since he was going to be living in Sweden for some time, he thought he should read something about the country . (Rather formal)
We could go and visit Sue, seeing that we have to drive past her house anyway.
Seeing that is used in informal English. Some people also use seeing as in informal speech.
For, in that, inasmuch as (formal)
We must begin planning now for the future may bring unexpected changes.
      The film is unusual
in that there are only four actors in it.
Clara and I have quite an easy life
inasmuch as neither of us has to work too hard but we earn quite a lot of money.

View of "Sandeford" according to Peter Foss. Photo by author June 1999. As Society members are certainly aware, Bosworth is a battle worth studying. While the English may boast that their isle has not been successfully invaded by a foreign army since 1066, the composition of Henry Tudor's army refutes this assertion. This battle brought a cataclysmic end to the reign of King Richard III, the Plantagenet dynasty and the fortunes of the House of York. Simultaneously, the consequences of Bosworth Field elevated a relatively obscure claimant to the throne, and ultimately produced the powerful Tudor dynasty and Henry VII's more famous successors: King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

    Council Tax
Local government must be financed and the core of that finance is the collection of Council Tax other funds come from Government. It is a tax on domestic property. Generally, the bigger the property is, the more tax will be charged. Finance for local government servcices is also raised by business rates are the way in which businesses and other occupiers of non-domestic property contribute towards the costs of local authority services Recently, we have seen some alarm by many Council Tax payers who feel probably with justification that their recent increases were beyond what they can afford. It is the right of citizens to protest if they feel they must, and it is right to expect a response from the local authorities themselves to explain why they need to increase payments every year. There is also resentment, again understandable, as to why citizens in the south of England must subsidize those in the north. As a Council Tax payer I must also express concern in this experiment in social redistribution to favour the north of England; it is quite wrong and dangerous, dangerous because far from healing the north - south divide it will only encourage resentment and anger toward those in the north. Councils need finance to serve the local community and our Council Tax should be directed to providing those services.

    William Gerald Golding
Zijn laatste boek "The Double Tongue" verscheen postuum in 1995.

Return to authorship page. The Elizabethan Edward de Vere was thus the son of a ruthless sexual adventurer, a man - incidentally - of no political consequence. Like father - says the proverb - like son. Edward matriculated in Cambridge Universiry at the age of eight-and-a-half (not surprising for the son of an earl), but remained less than a year, and never received an earned degree from either Cambridge or Oxford. He may have lived in the household of Sir Thomas Smith from 1559 until 1562, when by his father's death he became 17th earl of Oxford and ward of Sir William Cecil. On 23 July 1567, while practicing fencing with Edward Baynam, a tailor, in the backyard of Cecil's house in the Strand, the seventeen-year-old Oxford killed an unarmed undercook named Thomas Brincknell with a thrust to the thigh. A packed jury instructed by Cecil found that Brincknell had caused his own death by wilfully hurling himself on Oxford's rapier. Condemned as a suicide, Brincknell was denied Christian burial, his pregnant widow Agnes and three-year-old son Quyntyn stripped of their assets and abandoned to her relatives and the parish church. Thus logic and justice died that a hot-tempered young earl might walk free. Here Oxford learned a lesson which was to last the next thirty years of his life: he could commit no crime so vile that Cecil - soon to become the powerful Lord Burghley - would not personally forgive and persuade others to forget.
