sir william golding uses the breakdown of society to propel the plot along sir william golding’s character Jack Merridew is hotheaded and power-hungry.
http://www.bedford.k12.ma.us/tech/meet0405/breakdownessay.htm
Patrick J., Sarah J., Kendra C. “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone -” (181). At the end of Lord of the Flies , Jack’s tribe are complete savages who have turned the authority figure, the conch, and are willing to kill their own companions. The islanders have broken down their original society because of Jack’s eagerness for power, the new tribe Jack creates, the deaths of Simon and Piggy, and those who are responsible for the murders. Sir William Golding uses the breakdown of society to propel the plot along and develop characters. Sir William Golding’s character Jack Merridew is hot-headed and power-hungry. He wants to control the other boys and tries to become the chief when the boys first meet. When he becomes second-in-command, the leader of the choir boys, the “hunters,” he tries to elevate his status by creating a new tribe. Jack says, “I’m not going to play any longer. Not with you” (127). Because his hunter tribe is made up of “biguns,” there are only a few people left on the island that can stand up to him. Without the hunters, the old tribe, ruled by Ralph, does not have any meat, and the old tribe’s society is reduced to shambles. The original tribe is separated, which is the seed of the conflict, which will grow throughout the book. When writing the story, Sir William Golding made sure the old society would break down so that the characters could reach major plot events.

The Double Tongue Sir William Gerald Golding (September 19, 1911 - June 19, 1993) is an English novelist and poet and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature (1983) "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today." Born on September 19, 1911 in Newquay, Cornwall, he was educated at Oxford University (Brasenose College). During World War II he served in the Royal Navy and was involved in the sinking of Germany's mightiest battleship, the Bismarck. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day and at war's end went back to teaching and writing. Golding's often allegorical fiction makes broad use of allusions to classical literature, mythology, and Christian symbolism. Although no distinct thread unites his novels and his technique varies, Golding deals principally with evil and emerges with what has been characterized as a kind of dark optimism. Golding's first novel

http://www.richard111.com/bosworth1.htm
Battle of Bosworth August 22, 1485 The unofficial heir to Lancaster was now Henry Tudor. Tudor was descended on his mother's side from John of Gaunt's illegitimate Beaufort children, and on his father's side from an unauthorized liaison between Henry V's widowed French queen, Katherine of Valois and Owen Tudor, a Welsh esquire. With the backing of the French king and an army gathered from the jails and mercenaries of France and the remnants of the Lancastrian army, they prepared to invade England in the summer of 1485. By May, Richard left London for the last time and journeyed to Windsor. His Knights and Esquires of his Household accompanied him. Francis, Viscount Lovel, was sent to Southampton to lead the forces in case Tudor landed in the southern counties. John, Duke of Norfolk, was stationed in Essex. Sir Robert Brackenbury, the Constable of the Tower, was defending the capital. Richard left Windsor and departed for Kenilworth. By the middle of June, he was at the centre of his realm at Nottingham Castle. He sent his niece, Elizabeth of York, along with her sisters, his nephews and his illegitimate son, John of Gloucester, to Sheriff Hutton. From Nottingham, he sent instructions to the commissioners of array in all the shires alerting them to the invasion. On the 11of August, a messenger brought news to Richard, who had been at Beskwood Lodge, that Henry Tudor had landed at Milford Haven in South Wales on Sunday, the 7th of August.

Very deep, interesting use of symbolism, well-written. Cons It's sorta... disturbing... The Bottom Line The symbolism is absolutely fantastic, and the theme is the product of a true genius. Full Review For my sophomore year in high school, we read and studied this grossly intriuging book by Sir William Golding. Many aspects of the book were covered - the usage of symbolism, and the overall theme the book suggests. The theme that, if left to fend in the wild, humans will sink into a level of savagery. Is this true? Certainly - this book represents a totally believable scenario that fully backs up that thought. Though the book is a bit unclear (probably purposely so) on the background *before* the plane crash, the most believed thought is that the boys in this book have come from an English school, probably evacuated because of a threat of war. World War II? Probably. While the children were being taken out of the country, it is believed that the plane they rode was shot down. The pilots died, but the cabin the kids were riding in was detached. They survived, landing on a tropical island.
