SIR WILLIAM GOLDING NOVELIST AND WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE FOR LITERATURE From William Golding at BWS edited by John Cox as a memorial tribute. "William Golding was a teacher at Bishop Wordsworth's School for three different periods of his life. He is well known for his book 'The Lord Of The Flies' which he based on the boys he so patiently observed. rvation of them, presumably not only as commander but as author as well. Rather like Robinson Crusoe unable to move his new craft William Golding and his cadets found theirs too large to move round the house. For one absorbed in his own creations William Golding gave much to school life. He regularly sang with the choir in chapel services and was a soloist in the live 1945 BBC Radio broadcast of 'The Finding of the King' (written by F.C. Happold) shortly before leaving the Royal Navy and rejoining the staff at Bishop's. He also played the oboe in the school orchestra. At one particular rehearsal the school orchestra was sounding even more excruciating than usual. "Mr Golding. Can you give us that 'A' again?" Golding was a stickler for correct English usage. "I'm afraid I can't give you that one" he replied, "but I'll give you one like it!". The above is from a drawing by
Old Wordsworthian James Starzacher
He brought his dramatic expertise from outside school to bear upon play productions such as Oedipus Rex in December 1940 before leaving to join the Royal Navy. A lecture he gave on mediaeval stained glass is recalled as knowledgeable and interesting and as master in charge of a trip to Figsbury Rings he gave permission for the boys to form into two groups - one to attack the fort and one to defend it. The author's opportunity for close observation of boys in conflict was further extended.

The Nobel Prize for literature is one of the greatest awards a writer can be given. The award’s greatness is not due to the cash prize they receive or the pretty plaque, but the prize is validity of being an exceptional writer. Only ninety-eight people in the world have acclaimed themselves as being one of these great writers, one of them being Sir William Golding. Born in England, Golding does not share the same rational writing techniques as other English writers. Instead Golding focuses on complexity, and the utter ignorance and evilness within all people. A running theme in Golding's works is that man is savage at heart, always ultimately reverting back to an evil and primitive nature.
Sir William Gerald Golding was born in the village of St. Columb Minor in Cornwall, England on September 19th, 1911. His father was a well-known schoolmaster with radical convictions in politics and strong faith in science. Soon after the birth of William, his father moved their family to Wiltshire where he would teach at the Marlborough Grammar School. Golding started writing at the age of seven and showed he to be an exceptional writer before reaching the age of thirteen. A few of his favorite books as a child were Tarzan of the Apes, Coral Island, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea which indicate him as having a great sense of adventure. His parents both shared a scientific humanism, which Golding learned from them while also being very affluent in religion.

The Paper Men Aurora: Although your first novel, Lord of the Flies, was not published until you were forty-three years old, you have written a total of ten novels as well as other works, including two books of essays, a play, and a travel journal of a trip you made through Egypt. How long have you actually been writing, and how much discipline do you impose upon yourself when working on a novel? Golding: Aurora: The Ladder and the Tree Golding: Yes, my father was very musical, and music plays quite a large part in my life. I play the piano passionately and inaccurately. Indeed, I worked out the other day that of my seventy-five years; I have spent at least one year sitting on a piano stool. Aurora: Who are your favourite composers?

June 19, 1993, Perranarworthal, near Falmouth, Cornwall), English novelist who in 1983 won the Nobel Prize for Literature for his parables of the human condition. He attracted a cult of followers, especially among the youth of the post-World War II generation. Educated at Marlborough Grammar School, where his father taught, and at Brasenose College, Oxford, Golding graduated in 1935. After working in a settlement house and in small theatre companies, he became a schoolmaster at Bishop Wordsworth's School, Salisbury. He joined the Royal Navy in 1940, took part in the action that saw the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck, and commanded a rocket-launching craft during the invasion of France in 1944. After the war he resumed teaching at Bishop Wordsworth's until 1961. Golding's first published novel was Lord of the Flies (1954; film 1963 and 1990), the story of a group of schoolboys isolated on a coral island who revert to savagery. Its imaginative and brutal depiction of the rapid and inevitable dissolution of social mores aroused widespread interest. The Inheritors (1955), set in the last days of Neanderthal man, is another story of the essential violence and depravity of human nature. The guilt-filled reflections of a naval officer, his ship torpedoed, who faces an agonizing death are the subject of

The choice was unexpected, because the internationally famous novelist Graham Greene (1904-1991) was considered the strongest candidate from the English writers. In many works Golding has revealed the dark places of human heart, when isolated individuals or small groups are pushed into extreme situations. His work is characterized by exploration of 'the darkness of man's heart', deep spiritual and ethical questions. "Twenty-five years ago I accepted the label 'pessimist' thoughtlessly without realising that it was going to be tied to my tail, as it were, in something the way that, to take an example from another art, Rachmaninoff's famous Prelude in C sharp minor was tied to him. No audience would allow him off the concert platform until he played it. Similarly critics have dug into my books until they could come up with something that looked hopeless. I can't think why. I don't feel hopeless myself." (from Nobel Lecture William Golding was born in the village of St. Columb Minor in Cornwall. His father was a schoolmaster who had radical convictions in politics and a strong faith in science. Golding started writing at the age of seven, but following the wishes of his parents, he studied natural sciences and English at Brasenose College, Oxford. His first book, a collection of poems, appeared a year before Golding received his B.A.
