Report from the Fifth Annual Maria Goeppert-Mayer Symposium
"All of the symposium talks this year, as in previous years, were united by their attention to interactions and interfaces, and all the talks illustrated the interdisciplinarity that has become the hallmark of this event," said symposium co-organizers Kim Baldridge, senior principal scientist at SDSC and adjunct associate professor of chemistry in the UCSD Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Tammy Dwyer, associate professor of chemistry at the University of San Diego. In addition to five invited speakers, the symposium featured nearly 30 posters presented by members of research groups at Arizona State University, Caltech, UCSD, UCLA, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and the Weizmann Institute (Israel). More than 120 people attended the lectures and poster session. Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1906-1972).

Maria Goeppert Mayer (1906 - 1972)
Maria Goeppert Mayer was born June 28, 1906, Katowice in 1924 to study mathematics and received her doctorate in theoretical physics in 1930, under the tutelage of Max Born . After her marriage in 1930, Mayer left Germany for Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where her husband, Joseph E. Mayer , taught in the chemistry department and she received an assistantship in the physics department. During most of her career, nepotism rules at universities where her husband worked prevented Mayer from holding full-time positions. After a move to New York, Mayer landed her first paid position in 1941, a half-time teaching post at Sarah Lawrence College . During World War II, she worked with Harold Urey on separating U-235 from natural uranium. In 1946, the Mayers moved to Chicago, where Maria worked as an unsalaried associate professor of physics at the Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago . She became a consultant to the Metallurgical Laboratory and then a senior physicist at the newly formed Argonne National Laboratory At Argonne, Mayer's interests turned to nuclear physics, and

    (Physikerin)

The prestigious Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award was established through sponsorship by the General Electric (GE) Foundation in 1985 in memory of the physicist of the same name who shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in physics with two other scientists for her research on the shell model of the atomic nucleus.

Maria Goeppert-Mayer Physiscist Nobel Laureate (1906-1972) She married Joseph Edward Mayer, an American working with James Franck, a Nobel Prize winner, who was on her doctoral committee. After her marriage they moved to Baltimore. At first, she did not find employment as a physicist. She worked as a German correspondent for a physicist. However, she was allowed to do her own research. Together with her husband, she wrote a text book on "Statistical Mechanics" in 1938, and stood up for her Jewish colleagues, who were forced to emigrate from Germany. After the U.S. joined the war, she was included in the building of nuclear bombs, although she was against its actual use and for peaceful use of nuclear energy. She eventually became a professor in the Physics Department and in the Institute for Nuclear Studies in Chicago in 1946. In 1960, she moved to La Jolla, California, where she was a professor of physics and continued research of your own. In 1950, she published her theories, and together with a like-minded colleague from Heidelberg, she wrote a book on the synthesis of atoms, for which they received the Nobel-Prize in Physical Science in 1963. Maria Goeppert-Mayer, Maria Göppert
    Physics, Mathematics, Nobel Prize Winners
A mathematician and physicist, Maria Goeppert Mayer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 for her work on the nuclear shell structure. Maria Göppert was born in 1906 in Kattowitz, then in Germany (now Katowice, Poland). Her father became a professor of pediatrics at the University at Göttingen, and her mother was a former music teacher known for her entertaining parties for faculty members. With her parents support, Maria Göppert studied mathematics and science, preparing for a university education. But there were no public schools for girls to prepare for this venture, so she enrolled in a private school. The disruption of World War I and the post-war years made study difficult and closed the private school. A year short of finishing, Göppert nevertheless passed her entrance exams and entered in 1924. The only woman teaching at the university did so without a salary a situation with which Göppert would become familiar in her own career. She began by studying mathematics, but the lively atmosphere as a new center of quantum mathematics, and exposure to the ideas of such greats as Niels Bohrs and Max Born, led Göppert to switch to physics as her course in study. She continued her study, even on the death of her father, and received her doctorate in 1930.
