Unified Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions without Neutral Currents
Howard Georgi and Sheldon L. Glashow
Lyman Laboratory of Physics, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Received 13 March 1972 We construct unified models of weak and electromagnetic interactions using just three gauge fields which correspond to the intermediate vector boson and the photon. These models may be renormalizable, and do not predict processes involving neutral lepton currents. URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRL/v28/p1494

Spontaneously Broken Gauge Symmetry and Elementary Particle Masses
Howard Georgi and Sheldon L. Glashow
Lyman Laboratory of Physics, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138
Received 24 July 1972 There are a number of approximate relations among elementary particle masses. In conventional theories, these are explained by assuming a hierarchy of interactions with the property that the stronger interactions have the more extensive symmetry. In renormalizable theories based on spontaneously broken gauge symmetry, this view is untenable. Manifest breaking of the gauge symmetry would destroy the renormalizability. We explore the possible origin of approximate mass formulas in theories of this kind. URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PRD/v6/p2977

I've been thinking more about neutrinos and their significance for grand unified theories. The term "grand unified theory" sounds rather pompous, but in its technical meaning it refers to something with limited goals: a quantum field theory that attempts to unify all the forces except gravity. This limitation lets you pretend spacetime is flat. The heyday of grand unified theories began in the mid-1970s, shortly after the triumph of the Standard Model. As you probably know, the Standard Model is a quantum field theory describing all known particles and all the known forces except gravity: the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces. The Standard Model treats the electromagnetic and weak forces in a unified way - so one speaks of the "electroweak" force - but it treats the strong force seperately. In 1975, Georgi and Glashow invented a theory which fit all the known particles of each generation into two irreducible representations of SU(5). Their theory had some very nice features: for example, it unified the strong force with the electroweak force, and it explained why quark charges come in multiples of 1/3. It also made some new predictions, most notably that protons decay with a halflife of something like 10 or 10 years. Of course, it's slightly inelegant that one needs

After attending Government College at Lahore, he received a Ph.D. from Cambridge (1952). He taught in Lahore for three years before returning to England, first teaching mathematics at Cambridge (1954–57), then moving to Imperial College in London, where he became a professor of theoretical physics. In the early 1960s he developed a theory to explain some behavior of the weak interactions of elementary particles. For this work, in 1979 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Steven Weinberg and Sheldon Glashow . To support Third World scientists and scientific research, Salam founded what is now the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in 1964 and the Third World Academy of Sciences in 1983 (both in Trieste, Italy). He headed the International Center until his death. 58. Sheldon Lee Glashow

http://xoomer.virgilio.it/llpassal/glashow.html
