Gell-Mann, Murray
July 1997 Dr. Gell-Mann is Professor and Co-Chairman of the Science Board at the Santa Fe Institute. He is also the Robert Andrews Millikan Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. In 1969 he received the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. Gell-Mann's interests extend to historical linguistics, archeology, natural history and the conservation of biological diversity, and other subjects connected with biological and cultural evolution and with learning and thinking. Much of his recent research at the Santa Fe Institute has focused on the theory of complex adaptive systems, which brings many of those topics together. He is the author of The Quark and the Jaguar , published in 1994, in which he traces for the lay reader the chain of relationships linking the simple basic laws of physics to the complexities we see around us.

Gell-Mann, Murray
US theoretical physicist. In 1964 he formulated the theory of the quark as one of the fundamental constituents of matter. In 1969 he was awarded a Nobel prize for his work on elementary particles and their interaction.
Gell-Mann proposed in 1962 a classification system for elementary particles called the eightfold way. It postulated the existence of supermultiplets, or groups of eight particles which have the same spin value but different values for charge, isotopic spin, mass, and strangeness. The model also predicted the existence of supermultiplets of different sizes.
Gell-Mann was born in New York and studied at Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became professor at the California Institute of Technology 1956.
Gell-Mann proposed in 1953 a new quantum number called the strangeness number, together with the law of conservation of strangeness, which states that the total strangeness must be conserved on both sides of an equation describing a strong or an electromagnetic interaction but not a weak interaction. This led to his theory of associated production 1955 concerning the creation of strange particles. Gell-Mann used these rules to group mesons, nucleons (neutrons and protons), and hyperons, and was thereby able to form successful predictions.

Sarfatti Review
of
The Quark and the Jaguar
W.H. Freeman, 1994 Version 0.1 Note just added: John Gribbon defends the idea of "nonlocality" which Gell-Mann tries to reject. Ch.11 begins Murray Gell-Mann's popular exposition of quantum mechanics. He accepts as a working hypothesis that quantum mechanics is "exactly correct" p.136. This would preclude the new "back-action" idea I have professed elsewhere which involves a violation of today's quantum mechanics as the essential signature of all living organizations of matter. Gell-Mann's main concerns are to show that nonlocality with its faster-than-light and backwards-in-time "spooky" influences are illusory, and to show how the familiar classical world (of heavy objects moving predictably given initial conditions) emerges from weird quantum reality. It is Gell-Mann's goal to exorcise any remnants of what he considers to be a superstitious "anthropocentric" magical view of fundamental physical reality. physicists are only now approaching a really satisfactory interpretation, one that affords a deep understanding of how the quasiclassical domain of everyday experience arises from the underlying quantum-mechanical character of nature. p.136 I agree with Gell-Mann when he says that the original interpretation of quantum mechanics, restricted to repeated experiments performed by external observers, is far too special ... especially since it has become increasingly clear that quantum mechanics must apply to the whole universe.

http://www.english.emory.edu/Bahri/Gell_Mann.html
Murray Gell-Mann Biography B orn on September 15, 1929, in New York, New York, Murray Gell-Mann had a passion for learning that was seemingly inborn and insatiable. Son of Austrian-Hungarian immigrants, Murray and his brother, Ben, frequently visited museums and zoos, and explored their urban environment in an endless quest for knowledge. The passion for education was a family tradition, as Murray's father, Arthur Gell-Mann, established the Arthur Gell-Mann School of Languages, where he taught other immigrants to speak impeccable English. Arthur urged Murray to study all subjects, especially physical science and mathematicstwo subjects that Murray would later revolutionize with his brilliant ideas. Today, Murray Gell-Mann is Professor and Co-Chairman of the Science Board of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI). His book, The Quark and the Jaguar: Adventures in the Simple and the Complex , deals with Complex Adaptive Systems (see below), which are the focus of study at SFI. Gell-Mann's esteemed position at SFI is the result of his expertise in physics as well as cultural and linguistic studies. In 1969, Gell-Mann received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on elementary particles. He invented the "Eightfold Way" theory that attempted to harmonize over 100 chaotic subatomic particles within the nucleus of an atom. He discovered the most elementary particle known to science and named it the "quark". Using his data about quarks, Gell-Mann formed theories about the properties within an atom that keep the nucleus bound together.
