From the Paper:
"The Civil Rights Movement in its contemporary form started in 1955 with an act of mild disobedience by a black woman on a bus in the Deep South. Black leaders developed several strategies over the next few years, strategies that would be successful in changing laws and in getting some of the long-standing discriminatory institutions of the South changed. Between 1954 and 1965, the Civil Rights Movement developed into a major movement for social justice, societal change, and self-determination for millions of black Americans. The tactics undertaken by the movement have ranged from violent to nonviolent, with nonviolent predominating under the direction of Martin Luther King Jr. and his followers. The movement started first around the busing issue in Montgomery, Alabama, but it was also the culmination of decades of frustration nearly a century ..."

Jan. 2000. 848p. Knopf, $35 (0-679-43397-X). Hailed by the publisher as the long-awaited translation of a masterpiece of twentieth-century fiction, this is that rare instance where the hyperbole is justified Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort is the real thing. Du Gard, who won the 1937 Nobel Prize for one of the novels in his eight-volume Les Thibaults , left behind a trunk full of manuscripts at his death in 1958. Eventually they were edited into this volume, the richly imagined memoirs of Bernard de Maumort, who is born in 1870 to the landed gentry and dies on the family estate just after the Second World War. Maumort's voice is intimate and warm, his stories richly detailed and nuanced. Most of the memoirs are set in the late nineteenth century and concern Maumort's rural childhood and young adulthood in Paris; the later narrative is less complete. Throughout, one is reminded of literary antecedents, beginning with Augustine's Confessions . In the well-drawn historical and social reality, there are strong echoes of Tolstoy; in Maumort's close examination of himself and those close to him, one is reminded of Proust. In Maumort, Du Gard created a character whose complexity, through his many contradictions, is gradually revealed to us. His love for his Creole mistress, for example, does not preclude his belief in racial stereotypes. His freethinking ideas about sexuality are expressed in language brimming with judgment. Twentieth-century humanity, Du Gard seems to be saying, is capable of brilliance and beauty, stupidity and ugliness. For the aficionados, or just those who want to sustain Du Gard's creation, the volume contains letters written by Maumort as well as a sort of daybook. Lovingly translated.

Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort
Roger Martin du Gard A literary event: the long-awaited translation of one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century fiction. Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort is Roger Martin du Gard's magnum opus, the crowning achievement of a career that included the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1937. Written over the final eighteen years of his life and intended to be read only posthumously, this tremendous creation sprang from the writer's unflinching examination of the conundrum of our moral ambivalence: why, knowing what is right, do people do wrong? Martin du Gard's complex response constitutes one of the most devastating critiques of human behavior ever produced. The author casts his reflections in the form of a memoir written by Bertrand de Maumort, an aristocrat, a soldier, an intellectual ostensibly the very flower of European culture at its zenith. Born in 1870, Maumort grows up in a chateau where a series of enlightened tutors tend to his education. Later, while preparing to enter the French military academy, he lives with his Uncle Eric, a powerful academic whose Sunday at-homes attract such luminaries as Renan, Turgenev, Daudet, and Pasteur. Keenly aware of his advantages, Maumort aspires to self-knowledge and a transcendent objectivity in his relations with the world.

Literature in 1937. Martin du Gard and Gide's
friendship lasted nearly forty years, beginning
as a student/mentor relationship it became a
friendship of equals. Few other friends put
up with so many of Gide's eccentricities as
Martin du Gard did. The correspondance
is collected within the pages of Gide Journals
(Knopf, various dates) and within Roger Martin du Gard's diary excerpts published in Recollections of Andre Gide This excerpt is taken from Martin du Gard's book Recollections of Andre Gide (Viking Press, 1953) November, 1913 At last I have met Andre Gide! Last Sunday I was invited to the Nouvelle Revue Francaise before dinner. It was their monthly reception for contributors and friends. In the shop on the rue Madame, I found about a dozen young men, grouped round Gaston Gallimard and Jean Schlumberger (the author of L'Inquiete paternite). On the counter, between the accountant's ledgers and the typewriter, were some cups, none of them matching, and a plateful of dry buns. The editorial secretary, a tall, thin, and very young man with a graceful awkwardness of manner, had a smile for us all as he handed round the tea. We might have been in a boy's club. His name is Jacques Riviere. (Copeau is still nominally in charge of the magazine; but sine Vieux-Colombier opened, not long ago, he has no time for anything but this theater.) I had already met Jean Schlumberger. As he moved from one to another of us there was a well-mannered coolness about him: even he himself seemed intimidated by it, and it was touching to see how he tried to transform it into an appearance of smiling good nature...

http://www.adventice.com/culture/livre01.htm
