Martin du Gard was originally trained as an archivist and expert in old handwriting. His literary fame rests on his eight-part novel The World of the Thibaults , which continued the tradition of Stendhal and Tolstoy in its wide historical scope. In his works Martin du Gard often juxtaposed two different characters and studied through their conflict philosophical and religious problems. "One can love the people and not be able to stand their ongoing company. One can love the populace and not like to live with the individuals who compose it. Their ways of being and of thinking, their ways of being happy or unhappy, their desires, their welfare, their joys, their emotions, their sensitivity, their reactions are not my own; and I am a foreigner among them. My climate is not theirs. Whenever circumstances have forced me into contact with them, I have suffered from it." French writer whose novels include the eight-part series The Thibaults (1922–1940). He won the 1937 Nobel Prize for literature. Encyclopedia Martin du Gard, Roger r´zhā m¤rtăN də g¤r ) , 1881–1958, French novelist. Long associated with the Nouvelle Revue fran§aise, he first gained recognition with Jean Barois (1913), a novel of France during the Dreyfus Affair . His fame, however, rests chiefly on his eight-part novel cycle The World of the Thibaults (1922–40, tr. 1939–41). A story of two families, one Roman Catholic and the other Protestant, it explores the conflicts of French society in the early 20th cent. He also began a second ambitious novel, Lieutenant-Colonel de Maumort, unfinished at his death and not published until 1983 (tr. 1999).
