its central themes - as in Gao's work in general - is skeptical attitude all generally accepted or authoritarian views: "Oh history oh history oh history oh history / Actually history can be read any way and this is a / major discovery!" After concluding Soul Mountain Gao Xingjian wrote a short essay in which he rejected literature's "duty to the masses" and stated that "literature is not concerned with politics but is purely a matter of the individual." Gao Xingjian wanted to free artistic expression from its struggle for social approval, calling this kind of literature, that has recovered its innate, spiritual character, 'cold literature'.

“Siempre me he reservado el derecho de hablar libremente”, afirmó ayer Gao Xingjian al comentar el guadañazo que le cayó encima cuando se representó por primera vez su obra de teatro más polémica, La parada. De hecho, antes que por su novelas, fue por sus ensayos críticos y sus obras de teatro que Xingjian emprendió el camino del exilio. Enviado a los campos de “reeducación” durante la Revolución Cultural (1966-1976), Gao Xingjian quemó y enterró la mayoría de sus escritos. Recién en 1979 pudo publicar sus obras y empezar a viajar al extranjero, especialmente a Europa, Francia e Italia. Entre 1980 y 1980 Xingjian publicó en China una serie de cuentos y escritos teóricos, particularmente el Primer ensayo sobre las técnicas de la novela moderna, que suscitaron una inmensa polémica estética que no tardó en convertirse en “pugna política”. Pero, incansablemente, el autor chino repetía a quien quisiera escucharlo que “la propaganda y el arte son dos cosas diferentes”.

Gao Xingjian "I själva verket är förhållandet mellan författaren och hans läsare så beskaffat att de aldrig behöver träffas eller umgås med varandra: det räcker att de möts genom hans verk, på ett andligt plan. Men ett ofrånkomligt krav ställer den mänskliga aktivitet som det litterära skrivandet utgör: författaren och läsaren måste möta varandra av egen vilja. Av den anledningen har litteraturen inga som helst förpliktelser gentemot massorna. Den kyligt objektiva litteraturen är en litteratur som går i landsflykt för att kunna överleva, en litteratur som vägrar att låta sig strypa av samhället, som strävar efter att rädda sig själv på det andliga planet. Om en nation inte anser sig kunna ge plats åt en sådan onyttig litteratur drabbar det inte bara författaren: det är också djupt tragiskt för nationen själv."
