D. Carleton Gajdusek
born Sept. 9, 1923, Yonkers, N.Y., U.S.
U.S. physician and researcher. He received his M.D. from Harvard University. He provided the first medical description of the central-nervous-system disorder kuru, unique to the Fore people of New Guinea, and concluded that it was spread by their funeral custom of ritually eating the deceased's brains. With Clarence Gibbs, Jr., he proposed that it was caused by an extremely slow-acting virus. Though kuru is now known to be caused by prions, his study had significant implications for research into multiple sclerosis, parkinsonism, and other degenerative neurological conditions. He shared a 1976 Nobel Prize with Baruch S. Blumberg

Daniel Carleton Gajdusek
Daniel Carleton Gajdusek (born September 9 Yonkers New York U.S.A. ) is an American physician and medical researcher, who was the corecipient (along with Baruch S. Blumberg ) of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976. He received the award in recognition of his study of a remarkable disease, Kuru Fore word for "trembling"). This disease was rampant among the South Fore people of New Guinea in the 1950's and 1960's. Gajdusek correctly connected the prevalence of the disease with the practice of funerary cannibalism , practiced by the South Fore. With elimination of this practice, Kuru disappeared among the South Fore within a generation. Gajdusek graduated in 1943 from the University of Rochester New York ), where he studies Physics Biology Chemistry and Mathematics . He obtained an M.D. from Harvard University in 1946. He performed postdoctoral research at both Caltech and Harvard before being drafted to complete military service at the Walter Reed Army Medical Service Graduate School as a research virologist . He held a position at the Institut Pasteur in Tehran from 1952 to 1953, where he was excited by the challenges "offered by urgent opportunistic investigations of epidemiological problems in exotic and isolated populations". In 1954 he went to work as a visiting investigator at the Walter and Eliza Institute of Medical Research in

Carleton Gajdusek "1952-53: Several bio-weapons were emplopyed by the U.S. in Korea, including brucellosis. Evidence also suggests that a pathogen causing hemorrhagic fever was deployed along the Hantaan River, but it 'blew back' over American troops, killing several hundred. D. Carleton Gajdusek (see article by Ms. Heslin this issue) sent by Pentagon to help contain the damage.
1957: Carleton Gajdusek turned up in remote New Guinea highlands where hundreds of Fore tribe were suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (kuru).." Scott "There they (Japanese) experimented upon the Fore Indian tribe and inoculated them with a minced-up version of the brains of diseased sheep containing the visna virus which causes "mad cow disease" or Creutzfeldt—Jakob disease......About five or six years later, after the Japanese had been driven out, the poor people of the Fore tribe developed what they called kuru, which was their word for "wasting", and they began to shake, lose their appetites and die. The autopsies revealed that their brains had literally turned to mush. They had contracted "mad cow disease" from the Japanese experiments.......In 1957, when the disease was beginning to blossom in full among the Fore people, Dr Carleton Gajdusek of the US National Institutes of Health headed to New Guinea to determine how the minced-up brains of the visna-infected sheep affected them. He spent a couple of years there, studying the Fore people, and wrote an extensive report. He won the Nobel Prize for "discovering" kuru disease in the Fore tribe."

His travels with the Beagle , 1831-36, set the stage for his later studies in geology, zoology, and botany. Subsequent to the publication of The Origin of Species in 1859, he was made an honorary member (1861) of the London Ethnological Society. Darwin did not specifically write upon human evolution until the later 1860s, when The Descent of Man was composed (publ. 1871), followed in 1872 by Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals . Both books were influential upon later writing and research in anthropology. Correspondence, Mss. The American Philosophical Society Library holds an extensive collection of Darwin letters, either in original or photo-copy form. The manuscript letter collection includes approximately 730 Darwin letters (B/D25.m, B/D25.L, B/D25.L1, B/D25.r, B/D25.1-361). The large groups of letters are to Charles Lyell and to George Romanes. The Library also holds photocopy or microfilm copies of almost the entirety of Darwin's known surviving correspondence, listed in A Calendar of the Correspondence of Charles Darwin, 1821-1882
