Emory Chemist Awarded First Fukui Medal for Ground-Breaking Work
Emory University chemist Keiji Morokuma has been awarded the first-ever Fukui Medal at the Asian Pacific Conference of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. He received the award May 2 in Bangkok from Thailand's minister of science and technology, Korn Thapparansi. The Fukui Medal was given to Morokuma for his outstanding contributions to the development of theoretical and computational chemistry. The award is named for Kenichi Fukui, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. The Fukui Medal is given by the Asian Pacific Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists to the most outstanding theoretical/computational chemist who works in, or is originally from, the Asian-Pacific region. Morokuma, the William Henry Emerson Professor of Chemistry and director of Emory’s Cherry L. Emerson Center for Scientific Computation, is a world-renowned quantum chemist. His latest work is on developing efficient methods to calculate the interaction energies of large molecules and assemblies of molecules. That research is widely used in biological and nanoscience modeling. He also is president of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He joined Emory in 1993.
