Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Kenichi Fukui The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1981 His awards include: The Japan Academy Medal, May 1962. National Science Foundation Senior Foreign Scientist Fellow, Feb.-July, 1970. His honors include: Imperial Honor of the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, Nov. 1988, Honorary Member, the Royal Institution of Great Britain, March 1989, Foreign Member, the Royal Society, June 1989. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1981 jointly with Roald Hoffman "For their theories, developed independently, concerning the course of chemical reactions". Kenichi Fukui was born the eldest of three sons of Ryokichi Fukui, a foreign trade merchant and factory manager, and Chie Fukui, in Nara, Japan, on October 4, 1918. Chemistry was not his favorite subject, but the most decisive occurrence in his educational career came when his father asked the advice of Professor Gen-itsu Kita of Kyoto concerning the course he should take. For a few years after his graduation, Fukui engaged in experimental research on synthetic fuel chemistry in the Army Fuel Laboratory. The result brought me a prize in 1944. In 1947 he married Tomoe Horie. They have two children, Tetsuya (son) and Miyako (daughter). His work on experimental organic chemistry continued and the results were mostly published in Japanese papers, the number of which amounted to 137 during the period 1944-1972, together with his papers on reaction engineering and catalytic engineering.

Poland (now Ukraine ) and named in honor of the Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen. His family immigrated to the United States of America in 1949, where he attended Stuyvesant High School, graduating in 1955. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Columbia University (Columbia College) in 1958, and his Master of Arts degree in 1960 and his Doctor of Philosophy degree (working under the subsequent 1976 chemistry Nobel Prize winner William N. Lipscomb, Jr.) in 1962, both from Harvard University. He also developed, with R. B. Woodward, rules for elucidating reaction mechanisms. He is also a writer of poetry published in two collections, "The Metamict State" (1987) and "Gaps and Verges" (1990), and of books explaining chemistry to the general public. Also, he wrote a play called "O2 Oxygen" about the discovery of Oxygen, but also about what it means to be a scientist and the importance of process of discovery in science. He received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981. The following press release from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences describes Hoffman and co-winner Kenichi Fukui's work:

FRONTIER ORBITALS AND REACTION PATHS
Selected Papers of Kenichi Fukui

edited by Kenichi Fukui (Institute for Fundamental Chemistry) (Kyoto University)
This book is a collection of selected papers on the Frontier Orbital Theory by Nobel prizewinner Kenichi Fukui (Chemistry 1981), with introductory notes. It provides the basic concept and formulation of the theory, and the physical and chemical significance of the frontier orbital interactions in chemistry, together with many practical applications. The formulation of the Intrinsic Reaction Coordinate and applications to some simple systems are also presented. The aim of this volume is to show by what forces chemical reactions are driven and to demonstrate how the regio- and stereo-selectivities are determined in chemical reactions. Students and senior investigators will gain insight into the nature of chemical reactions and find out how quantum chemical calculations are connected with chemical intuition.
Contents:
  • A Molecular Orbital Theory of Reactivity in Aromatic Hydrocarbons
  • Molecular Orbital Theory of Orientation in Aromatic, Heteroaromatic, and Other Conjugated Molecules

Minoya, Iyuki and Mrs. Fukui in Kyoto
07:54 JST Eating and Cooking Joi's Diary Photo After Koyasan, we went to Kyoto. The evening we arrived, we had a great kaiseki dinner at Sakamoto, one on our favorite kaiseki restaurants in Kyoto. It is in the Gion district and is on the river with a great view during the cherry blossom season. After dinner, we went to Minoya, a tea house. I wrote about tea houses in 1994 . Ichisuzu, whose photo appears in my entry from 1994 joined us. The picture to the right is a picture of Mizuka and Ichisuzu. Ichisuzu told us that Mamehide who I also met in 1994 left Kyoto to go to school to learn to be a painting restoration professional and that she was moving to Italy soon. She is the talk of the town. Here are some pictures from Minoya. Kaoru Yoshimura who runs the tea house is an old family friend. About 24 years ago my mother taught English at Minoya to the geisha and the maiko . Mrs. Fukui, the wife of my father's teacher, Professor Kenichi Fukui who would later win a Nobel Prize for his orbital frontier theory in chemistry introduced my mother to Minoya. Kaoru, who was the daughter of the okasan of the tea house, watched my mother teach. She was 17 or so at the time. When my parents took us the the US, Kaoru wrote my mother every day asking to join us in the US. My mother talked to Kaoru's mother and convinced her to let Kaoru come to the US and help take care of the kids. I was 3 at the time. She was my babysitter. After several months and 20kgs of weight gain, Kaoru returned to Kyoto. Her mother passed away and she now runs Minoya. I visit Minoya several times a year to catch up with everyone in Gion and visit temples, drink sake under the cherry blossoms and to go to the special events where the
