APS elects David Raup, Jerome Friedman
    By Steve Koppes
News Office Members of the society are organized into five classes: mathematical and physical sciences; biological sciences; social sciences; humanities; and the arts, learned professions and public affairs. Raup was selected to serve in its biological sciences class, and Friedman, who currently is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will serve in its mathematical and physical sciences class. Raup is a would-renowned paleontologist and an authority on evolution and mass extinctions. He has studied the long-term patterns of life on earth and how impacts from extraterrestrial bodies such as comets or asteroids may have caused mass extinctions. He is the author of several books, including The Nemesis Affair: A Story of the Death of Dinosaurs and the Ways of Science (1986) and Extinction: Bad Genes or Bad Luck? Friedman shared the 1990 Nobel Prize with Richard Taylor and Henry Kendall for a series of experiments that showed that fundamental particles of matter are not protons and neutrons, but smaller particles known as quarks. This evidence allowed scientists to develop the Standard Model theory of matter, which states that all matter is made up of combinations of six quarks and six leptons that interact with three types of force particles.

Robert Hofstadter
By Jerome I. Friedman and William A. Little
R OBERT HOFSTADTER WAS BORN in New York City, educated on the East Coast, but spent most of his academic career at Stanford University. He is best known for his work on determining the distribution of charge and magnetic moment in the nuclei of atoms and of the nucleons themselves, for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1961. He extended the work done in the early part of the twentieth century by Ernest Rutherford, who had shown that atoms were composite, containing electrons and a nucleus many thousands of times smaller than the atom. Rutherford discovered this by scattering alpha particles from thin metal foils of the elements and measuring the number of particles scattered as a function of the angle. The surprisingly large number of particles that were scattered through large angles could only be explained by collisions with a heavy, very small, perhaps point-like, positively charged object, which he called the nucleus. Some 40 years later Hofstadter determined the internal structure of such nuclei by scattering high-energy electrons from thin targets and measuring the distribution of the number of these electrons as a function of angle. In these experiments he built on earlier work by others on electron-electron scattering from atoms and electron-nuclear scattering by Hanson, Lyman, and Scott at Illinois done at lower energies in 1951. Hofstadter showed that the nuclei had internal structure extending over a small but measurable distance and that the heavier nuclei had a relatively uniform density within a thin surface skin. The Nobel committee considered this to be the first "reasonably consistent" picture of the structure of the nucleus.

Jerome Friedman to give Robert Hofstadter Memorial Lectures
The 1997 Robert Hofstadter Memorial Lecture will be presented on the evening of Monday, February 24, '97, by Prof. Jerome Friedman of MIT. Prof. Friedman shared the 1990 Nobel Prize with SLAC's Richard Taylor and MIT's Henry Kendall for research on inelastic scateering from protons and neutrons, which provided the first direct evidence of the quark sub-structure of the nucleon. Prof. Friedman will also give the regular Physics/Applied Physics Colloquium on Feb. 25 at 4:00 in Varian Physics Rm. 101). Prof. Friedman worked with Prof. Hofstadter at the High Energy Physics Laboratory from 1957 to 1960 before accepting a faculty position at MIT. The title of Prof. Friedman's evening lecture will be "Are We Really Made of Quarks?". He will also give the regular Physics/Applied Physics colloquium the following afternoon (Tuesday, February 25), with a title to be announced later. Questions concerning the Hofstadter lecture should be referred to Jenifer Conan-Tice at 415-723-4347. Back to 1996 Newsletter Table of Contents

Subject: Jerry Friedman wins SIGKDD 2002 Innovation award
ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award is the premiere technical award in Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery field, a "Nobel Prize" of data mining, and is given to one individual or one group who has made significant technical innovations in the field of Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery that have been transferred to practice in significant ways, or that have significantly influenced direction of research and development in the field. The winner of the SIGKDD 2002 Innovation Award is Jerome H. Friedman. Professor, Department of Statistics, Stanford University, and Leader, Computation Research Group, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Jerry Friedman has contributed a remarkable array of topics and methodologies to data mining and machine learning during the last 25 years. In 1977, as leader of the numerical methods group at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), he coauthored several algorithms for speeding up nearest-neighbor classifiers. In the following seven years, he collaborated with Leo Breiman, Richard Olshen, and Charles Stone to produce a landmark work in decision tree methodology, "Classification and Regression Trees" (1984), and released the commercial product CART(R). This work introduced the gini, twoing, and ordered twoing splitting rules, cost-complexity pruning, oblique splitters, the use of a misclassification cost matrix to influence the growing of trees, and the application of cross validation to decision trees. Part of this work was pre-figured in his 1977 paper on decison tree induction.

The Nobel Prize in Physics

Relativity
In 1960, I was hired as a faculty member in the Physics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. When I arrived I joined David Ritson's research group. A short time later he accepted a position at Stanford University and I inherited a small group. With these resources I soon began working on collaborative effort to measure muon pair production at the Cambridge Electron Accelerator (CEA) in order to test the validity of Quantum Electro-Dynamics. Henry Kendall joined my group in 1961 and we have been collaborators at MIT since that time. The last measurement we did at the CEA was a measurement of the deuteron form factor at the highest momentum transfers that could be reached at that accelerator to get some limits on the size of relativistic effects and meson currents.
As the program at SLAC was nearing completion we joined a collaborative effort at Fermilab involving a number of institutions to build a beam line and a single-arm spectrometer in the Meson Laboratory. During the latter half of the 1970's this collaboration carried out a series of experiments to investigate elastic scattering, Feynman scaling and production mechanisms in inclusive hadron scattering. When this work was completed, our group joined another collaboration to build a large neutrino detector at Fermilab. The objective of this program was to study the weak neutral currents in measurements of inclusive neutrino and anti-neutrino nucleon scattering, which were done in the first half of the 1980's. These investigations confirmed the predictions of the Standard Model.

Jerome Friedman , Stanford Professor of Statistics and member of SLAC Computing Services, is the winner of the 2004 Parzen Prize, established by Emanuel and Carol Parzen to "record the contemporary history of statistical innovation." Friedman has created many new statistical methods used widely today in exploratory data analysis searching for patterns in unstructured data and in "machine learning" teaching computers to make decisions in problems where humans excel. His work has been applied in fields ranging from computer vision to medical diagnosis to financial portfolio management. He received the award March 1 at Texas A&M University.
