Schedule Feb 14, 2002 Viscous Fingering and a Shape of an Electronic Droplet in the Quantum Hall Regime Dr. Paul Wiegmann, James Franck Institute Two different phenomena: (a) one classical: finger-like patterns in diffusion driven fronts, (b) the second is quantum: a pattern of electronic droplets in Quantum Hall regime, are found to be intimately related. They are described by the same equations scaled by a factor of up to 10 . I will discuss the origin of this relation and insights into analysis of (a) singularities in nonequilibrium patterns and (b) interference phenomena at the QHE plateau transitions. Ihr weiterer Lebensweg führte sie in ganz unterschiedliche Richtungen: Franck in die USA und Hertz in die Sowjetunion. James Franck wurde als Sohn eines Bankiers am 26. August 1882 in Hamburg geboren. 1901 begann er ein Studium der Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften in Heidelberg, ging jedoch 1902 nach Berlin, nahm ein Physikstudium auf und promoviert 1906. Im Anschluss nahm er eine Assistentenstelle am dortigen physikalischen Institut an, wo er sich 1911 habilitierte. Im ersten Weltkrieg wurde Franck durch Gas stark geschädigt und kam 1917 schwer krank nach Berlin zurück. Er bekam eine außerordentliche Professur am dortigen Kaiser-Wihelm-Institut.

Während des Studiums macht er die Bekanntschaft von Max Born, der ihm den Rat gibt, Physik zu studieren. Franck geht daraufhin 1902 nach Berlin, habilitiert sich dort 1911 im Fach Physik und macht die Bekanntschaft von Gustav Hertz. Galerie in der Halle des Goethe-Instituts Rext: Ilse Stein Am 7. April 1933 verkündeten die Nationalsozialisten das „Gesetz zur Wiederherstellung des Berufsbeamtentums". Dessen antisemitische Zielrichtung wurde im § 3 deutlich. Nach ihm waren „nicht-arische" Beamte in den Ruhestand zu versetzen, ausgenommen waren lediglich Frontkämpfer des Ersten Weltkriegs.

@import url(../../physci.css); James Franck Institute Faculty Research Summaries Much of the work in progress utilizes specialized facilities operated by the Institute. These include a low-temperature (cryogenics) laboratory, a materials preparation laboratory, x-ray diffraction and analytical chemistry laboratories, scanning probe and electron microscopies, and extensive shop and computer facilities. Formal courses are not offered by the Institute but a weekly colloquium series and frequent special seminars bring in outside scientists to discuss current research. All thirty-three members of the Institute faculty hold joint appointments in one or more departments, including Chemistry, Physics, Geophysical Sciences, Computer Science, and Mathematics. In addition, there are in the James Franck Institute approximately seventeen Research Associates and eighty graduate students, often shared by advisors from different academic departments. The intellectual environment is further enriched by more senior scholars including Senior Research Associates, Research Scientists and Visiting Scholars. In an age where much cutting-edge research lies at the boundaries between traditional disciplines, the James Franck Institute strives to stimulate creative interdisciplinary work at the forefront of science.
