B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Dario Fo (1926-) Prolific Italian playwright, actor and mime artist, manager-director, known for his satirical plays. Fo was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997. In his works Fo has combined oral expression from the popular performance tradition with radical thought. He has used laughter as a weapon against the conservative establishment of the Italy's political scene, and the social and international evils of the Cold War era. "Our task as intellectuals, as persons who mount the pulpit or the stage, and who, most importantly, address to young people, our task is not just to teach them method, like how to use the arms, how to control breathing, how to use the stomach, the voice, the falsetto, the contracampo. It's not enough to teach a technique or a style: we have to show them what is happening around us. They have to be able to tell their own story. A theatre, a literature, an artistic expression that does not speak for its own time has no relevance." (from Nobel Lecture Dario Fo was born in San Giano, a small town near the northern Italian city of Milan. His father was a railroad worker and was also a part-time actor. His mother came from a peasant background. During World War II Fo helped his father, who was a member of the resistance against German forces in Italy and took escaped Allied soldiers across the border to Switzerland. For a time, Fo served reluctantly also in the army, being afraid that he would be sent with the troops to Germany.

Italian playwright noted for his socially topical, satirical works, including Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970) and Trumpets and Raspberries (1981). He won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1997. Encyclopedia Fo, Dario, 1926–, Italian playwright, actor, and director, b. Leggiuno Sangiano. Fo developed a sharp and irreverent satirical farce that is influenced by Bertholt Brecht and Antonio Gramsci as well as traditional commedia dell'arte (although less formal than the latter). Inspired by the circus and carnivals, his theater uses slapstick, puns, ridicule, and parody to explore social and political issues and to criticize authority of all kinds. A long-time member of the Communist party (he was denied entry into the United States in the early 1980s), Fo has often been critical of the policies of the Roman Catholic church, which has termed some of his plays blasphemous. Forceful, wittily anarchic, and often disturbing, his work was impeded by Italian censorship before 1962. In 1968, Fo and his wife, actress Franca Rame, with whom he has frequently collaborated in writing and acting, began presenting plays on contemporary issues. The most famous of these is Accidental Death of an Anarchist (1970), a farce about the alleged suicide of an anarchist in police custody. Among his more than 70 other plays are

His father Felice was a station master for the Italian state railway, and the family frequently moved when Felice was transferred to new postings. Felice was also an amateur actor and a socialist. Dario learned storytelling from his maternal grandfather and Lombard fishers and glassblowers In 1940 Fo moved to Milan to study in architecture at the Brera Art Academy , but World War II intervened. His family was active in anti-fascist resistance and reputedly he helped his father to smuggle refugees and Allied soldiers to Switzerland . Near the end of the war Fo was conscripted into the army of the Republic of Sal² , but he escaped and managed to hide for the remainder of the war. After the war, Fo continued his architecture studies in Milan. Initially he commuted from Lago Maggiore, but soon his family moved to Milan. Fo became involved in the

DARIO FO
Dario Fo with Franca Rame The Italian dramatist, actor, and theatrical activist Dario Fo was first invited to perform by the A.R.T. in 1986, occasioning his first visit to the United States. For many years Fo's plays have been performed all over the world, perhaps more than any other contemporary dramatist, and his influence has been considerable. The A.R.T. produced his We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! in 1999 and the American premiere of Archangels Don't Play Pinball in 1988. Other works in his extensive oeuvre include Mistero Buffo Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas Accidental Death of an Anarchist Trumpets and Raspberries , and most recently The Devil with Boobs , a satiric comedy set in the Renaissance. Fo's strength is in the creation of texts that simultaneously amuse, engage, and provide perspectives. As in commedia dell'arte , where he often draws inspiration, Fo's plays are open for creative additions and dislocations, encouraging improvisation and influencing the audience in remarkable ways. His works have employed topics taken from current news, such as the rise of the Italian workers' movement, revolt in Chile, and the Palestinian situation, and they often include a discussion between actors and audience. As a bridge between popular culture and radical intellectuals, Fo's collective theatre occupies a central place in contemporary Italian culture.
