Teflon's STICKY QUESTION During Washington's Birthday Convocation, Washington College awarded an honorary degree to Charles O. Holliday, president and CEO of the DuPont Company. Holliday thus joined the ranks of Nobel Prize winners and inventors from DuPont among the Washington College alumni body. P. J. Wingate '33 remembers an occasion when two DuPont scientists visited Washington College and talked about what makes polymer chemistry so tricky. I n 1982 Dr. Roy J. Plunkett, the inventor of Teflon, and his former roommate at Manchester College, Dr. Paul J. Flory, Nobel Prize Winner in chemistry (1974), were among the distinguished chemists who gathered at Chestertown, Maryland, to help Washington College celebrate its "200 years of chemistry." After Dr. Charles Suckling, director of research for ICI in England, had delivered a talk on the invention of Fluothane, the anesthetic which had finally driven chloroform and ether from the operating rooms of hospitals around the world, there was an informal reception at the College's Hynson-Ringgold House, hosted by Ann McLain, wife of the former College President, Dr. Joseph H. McLain. I was seated at a table with Mrs. McLain, Plunkett and Flory when a lady from the Maryland Historical Society came to our table, just as Mrs. McLain was leaving to greet some other guests. The lady historian said her name was Joan Harbon, and that she wished to meet the inventor of Teflon. Plunkett promptly asked her to join us at our table and she accepted just as promptly and said she had a question for the inventor of Teflon. "We all know," she said, "that nothing sticks to Teflon, but if that is so how do they get Teflon to stick to a frying pan, a raincoat, or the cover on a football stadium?"

Trio wins American Chemical Society polymer education award
Two years after courses in polymer chemistry began to be offered at Virginia Tech, Paul J. Flory received the 1974 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his achievement in the physical chemistry of macromolecules. This year, the award given in his name to recognize outstanding achievements in polymer education is being presented to the pioneers of Virginia Tech's polymer education program.
Virginia Tech chemistry professors Tom Ward and James McGrath and chemical engineering professor emeritus Garth Wilkes, all of Blacksburg, have been awarded the Paul J. Flory Polymer Education Award by the American Chemical Society Division of Polymer Chemistry.
Ordinarily presented to an individual, the 2004 award recognizes the Virginia Tech team for long-term efforts in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education in polymer science and engineering, says Lloyd Robeson, a principal research associate for Air Products and Chemicals Inc. in Allentown, Pa., who nominated the trio. Since the 1970s, Ward, McGrath, and Wilkes have pulled together a team of faculty members from chemistry and engineering to teach hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students and provided short courses on polymer chemistry to thousands of industry and government scientists.
In 1972, Ward introduced a senior course on polymer and surface chemistry and a graduate course on the physical chemistry of polymers, which used Flory's textbook. "By 1974, Professor Ward was named an Outstanding Educator for America," says McGrath, who nominated Ward for the Flory prize at the same time Robeson nominated all three faculty members.

PROFESSOR DR. MICHLER ERHÄLT "PAUL J. FLORY" PREIS
Die University of North Texas in Denton (Texas) verlieh im Januar 2003 an Professor Dr. Goerg H. Michler vom Fachbereich Ingenieurwissenschaften den renommierten "Paul J. Flory Polymer Research Prize", den er als erster deutscher Wissenschaftler für seine "Arbeiten zur Mikromechanik von Kunststoffen sowie neuartige Erkenntnisse aus elektronenmikroskopischen Untersu-
    chungen" in Empfang nehmen konnte.
