Biography
Fleming was born on a farm at Lochfield near Darvel in East Ayrshire Scotland and was schooled for two years at the Academy in Kilmarnock . He later attended St Mary's Hospital medical school in London until World War I broke out. He participated in a battlefield hospital with many of his colleagues in the fronts of France . Being exposed to the horrific medical infections by the dying soldiers, he returned to St. Mary's after the war with renewed energy in searching for an improved antiseptic Both of Fleming's discoveries happened entirely by accident during the . The first, lysozyme , was discovered after Fleming sneezed into a bacterium-laced Petri dish . A few days later, it was noted that bacteria where the mucus had fallen had been destroyed. Fleming's labs were usually in disarray, which turned out to be to his advantage. In

Search Inventors The History of Penicillin Alexander Fleming, John Sheehan, Andrew J Moyer By Mary Bellis Penicillin is one of the earliest discovered and widely used antibiotic agents, derived from the Penicillium mold. Antibiotics are natural substances that are released by bacteria and fungi into the their environment, as a means of inhibiting other organisms - it is chemical warfare on a microscopic scale. In 1928, Sir Alexander Fleming observed that colonies of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus could be destroyed by the mold Penicillium notatum, proving that there was an antibacterial agent there in principle. This principle later lead to medicines that could kill certain types of disease-causing bacteria inside the body. At the time, however, the importance of Alexander Fleming's discovery was not known. Use of penicillin did not begin until the 1940s when Howard Florey and Ernst Chain isolated the active ingredient and developed a powdery form of the medicine.

Sir Alexander Fleming was a Scottish scientist who discovered the first ever antibiotic. This was penicillin, an excellent drug for killing bacteria. In 1928, in his lab he noticed that a mould had formed in his dish. It was killing the bacteria. From this mould came penicillin. Researcher: Gareth D. K. Elliott. Send this page to a friend! Fleming, Sir Alexander
Scottish bacteriologist who discovered the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, in 1928. In 1922 he had discovered lysozyme, an antibacterial enzyme present in saliva, nasal secretions, and tears. While studying this, he found an unusual mould growing on a neglected culture dish, which he isolated and grew into a pure culture; this led to his discovery of penicillin. It came into use in 1941. In 1945 he won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Howard W Florey and Ernst B Chain , whose research had brought widespread realization of the value of penicillin.
Fleming was born in Lochfield, Ayrshire, and studied medicine at St Mary's Hospital, London, where he remained in the bacteriology department for his entire career, becoming professor 1928.
Fleming discovered the antibacterial properties of penicillin, but its purification and concentration was left to Florey and Chain, in Oxford. Fleming also developed methods, which are still in use, of staining spores and flagella of bacteria. He identified organisms that cause wound infections and showed how cross-infection by streptococci can occur among patients in hospital wards. He also studied the effects of different antiseptics on various kinds of bacteria and on living cells. His interest in chemotherapy led him to introduce

http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/Museum/flemin.html
Alexander Fleming was born in 1881 at Lochfield, a farm outside Darvel, a small town in Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the third child, with seven other brothers and sisters. After completing his education at Regent Street Polytechnic, London in 1897, he took an office job for a few years. In 1901, he quit his job and went to St. Mary Hospital to study medicine. He then worked in Almroth Wright's research team as a research assistant with a strong interest in bacteriology. During the war between Britain and Germany in 1914, Fleming joined the British Royal Army Medical Corps to develop a cure to reduce the number of soldiers dying from infected wounds. He argued that antiseptics were not effective in preventing wounds from becoming infected. His argument was, however, rejected and little was done to relieve the suffering of many wounded soldiers. When World War I was over, Fleming continued working at St. Mary's Hospital. One day in 1928, before tossing some old petri dishes of culture away, he made an accidental discovery of a blue mold growing on the culture of some harmful kind of bacteria. The mold seemed to be able to kill off the bacteria. A series of experiments later proved his findings and led to the discovery of penicillin. It was a strain of penicillia which could kill off bacteria while not causing any damage to wounds. It worked against many kinds of bacteria and was mostly safe for the human body. Unfortunately, with insufficient support from the medical community, the research had to stop.

Sir Alexander Fleming 1881-1955
Fleming was born in Lochfield, nr Darvel in Ayrshire and moved to London to study medicine. When serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War, he witnessed many soldiers dying from infected wounds and this experience drove his interest in finding an agent to combat bacterial infections. He achieved his goal in 1928 with his discovery of penicillin although the drug could not be produced commercially for another 15 years. Fleming was awarded the Noble Prize and many other awards for his pioneering work although he never patented his discoveries in the hope that this would allow their cheap and plentiful supply.
