Berlin chemist Emil Fischer and Joseph von Mering synthesized diethyl barbituric acid or barbitone (Veronal) in 1902. They described their discovery in “Ueber eine neue Klasse von Schlafmitteln”, Therap Gegenw 44:97-101, 1903. The parent compound, barbituric acid, was first synthesised by Adolf von Baeyer in 1864, but barbituric acid is not itself pharmacologically active. Fischer and von Mering soon realised that their new drug was a sedative. Veronal represented a huge improvement on the medley of existing agents. It didn't taste unpleasant. It had few adverse side effects. Unlike foul-tasting potassium bromide, Veronal acted at therapeutic levels far beneath the toxic dose. Some 2,500 barbiturates were synthesized over the next century. More than fifty have been marketed as sedatives. In 1912, phenobarbital was introduced under the brand-name Luminal. From 1912 until around 1960 barbiturates were the mainstay of pharmacological treatments of anxiety and insomnia . The development of soluble barbiturates suitable for use as intravenous anaesthetics still lay in the future. German pharmacologist Helmut Weese (1897-1954) described the use of the ultra-short-acting hexobarbital (Evipan) as an induction agent on several thousand patients in 1932.

Fischer, Emil Hermann (1852 - 1919) German organic chemist and biochemist Here, he gained his doctorate in 1874 for work on phthaleins. The same year he made the vital discovery of phenylhydrazine, a compound that was later to prove the vital key for unlocking the structures of the sugars. Fischer became Baeyer's assistant and together they moved to Munich (1875). At Munich, working with his cousin, Otto Fischer, he proved that the natural rosaniline dyes are derivatives of triphenylmethane. Fischer has some claim to be called the father of biochemistry. He carried out extremely comprehensive work in three main fields: purines, sugars, and peptides, the last two effectively founding biochemistry on a firm basis of organic chemistry. The work on purines, begun in 1882, resulted in the synthesis of many important compounds, including the alkaloids caffeine and theobromine, and purine itself (1898). Fischer's early structures were incorrect but from 1897 the correct structures were used. In 1884 Fischer discovered that phenylhydrazine produces well-defined crystalline compounds with sugars, thus affording a reliable means of identification. In 1887 he synthesized first fructose (from acrolein dibromide) and later mannose and glucose. By 1891 he was able to deduce the configurations of the 16 possible aldohexoses, which he represented in the form of the famous Fischer projection formulae.

Julius Tafel was an organic chemist and physical chemist who studied the electrochemistry of organic compounds and the relation between rates of electrochemical reactions and applied overpotentials. He is the best known for the Tafel equation - one of the most important equations of electrochemical kinetics.
Julius Tafel was born in Choindez, Canton Berne, Switzerland, on June 2, 1862. He attended the Realgymnasium Emil Fischer who had obtained a professorship there in 1882, and who recognized early the young talented chemist. In 1882, Tafel received his Ph.D. degree under the guidance of Fischer, presenting a thesis on the isomerisation of indazole (that had just been discovered by Fischer and Kuzel) and the hypothetical isindazole. Together with Paal (another Fischer's assistant), Tafel worked briefly on the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds, a field in which Ludwig Knorr became famous at that time. Habilitation (study performed in Germany after Ph.D. in order to get further scientific promotion) in the field of organic chemistry, developing simple routes to amines by the reduction of phenylhydrazones of aldehydes and ketones. Tafel suggested sodium amalgam as a reducing agent that was novel for that time. However, Tafel had to assist Fischer in his synthetic work that detracted him from his own research. Later Fischer described how Tafel had assisted him in the synthesis of bulk amounts of acrolein (2-propenal, more often called by the trivial name acrolein) and acrolein dibromide (both of them extremely irritate the respiratory tract if inhaled). The synthesis was performed outdoor, exclusively on windy days, but once Tafel accidentally was surrounded by a toxic cloud that resulted in severe nose bleeding. When Fischer reported his results before the Presidium of

Hesse lives with his parents in Basle, where his father teaches at the "Basler Mission" and in 1883 obtains Swiss nationality (previously Russian nationality. The family returns to Calw. Grammar school in Göppingen in order to prepare for the Württemberg State Examination (July 1891) which is a requirement for a free education to become a Protestant clergyman in the "Tübinger Stift". As a State Scholar Hesse has to give up his Swiss civil rights so in November 1890 his father acquires the Württemberg citizenship for him (as the only member of the family).
