Niels Ryberg Finsen (1860 - 1904) Abb.: Sondermarke aus der schwedischen Nobelpreis-Serie Bildnis Finsens in der Mitte Niels Ryberg Finsen wurde am 15. Dezember 1860 in Thorshavn auf den Faröer Inseln geboren. Sein Vater, Hannes Steingrim Finsen, gehörte einer isländischen Familie an, deren Stammbaum sich bis ins 10.Jahrhundert zurückverfolgen läßt. Der Junge erhielt seine frühe Ausbildung in Schulen in Thorshavn und dann in Herlufsholm (Dänemark). Hier erklärte der Rektor, daß "Niels ein sehr netter Junge" war, aber "an Energie ziemlich leer". Nach einem Schulwechsel (Reykjavik, Island 1876), war er viel besser und erfolgreicher, obwohl er die Sprache anfangs nur schlecht beherrschte. 1903 erhielt der Forscher den Nobelpreis für Medizin und Physiologie "in Anerkennung seines Beitrags zur Behandlung von Krankheiten, insbesondere von Lupus vulgaris, mittels konzentrierter Lichtstrahlen, durch die er der medizinischen Wissenschaft einen neuen Weg erschloß". Am Festakt in Stockholm konnte er schon nicht mehr teilnehmen. Finsen starb am 24. September 1904

These polar media tend to facilitate the production of the superoxide anion radical, via transfer of an electron from the photosensitiser: The superoxide anion radical is capable of causing as much cellular damage as singlet oxygen. It can react either as an oxidant or a reducing agent, is a very good nucleophile, and is a base that can be protonated. In normal healthy skin, damage caused by singlet oxygen is not too extensive. To bring about extensive skin cell death via this mechanism, such as in the treatment of skin cancer by photodynamic therapy, an external photosensitiser is needed. Some soaps and cosmetics have been found to act as very efficient photosensitisers – hence so-called 'bikini dermatitis', a nasty skin rash wherever the soap or cosmetic has been applied. Niels Ryberg Finsen Born in the Faeroes of Icelandic parents in 1860, Niels Finsen was educated in Thorshavn (capital of the Faeroes), Herlufsholm in Denmark and Reykjavik in Iceland. In spite of language difficulties during his schooling he did well enough to study medicine in Copenhagen. He graduated in 1890 and, for a time, taught anatomy at the university. In 1893 he relinquished that post to devote himself to scientific research, earning a modest income as a private tutor to medical students. In spite of ill health throughout his life (he suffered from Pick's disease) he worked hard and was a successful sportsman.

One of the major advances of therapeutics in the 1890s was the development of successful "invisible light" therapies. These various therapies resulted from the pioneer work of Danish physician Niels Ryberg Finsen, MD (1860-1904). Finsen's light therapy and Wilhelm Konrad Roentgen's x-ray were the first major breakthroughs in treating an assortment of skin diseases. In 1893, in Copenhagen, Finsen began his experiments, which showed that ultraviolet rays have stimulating or bactericidal effects on lower organisms. He continued his research into the effect of light on living organisms, and by 1896, he had created the field of "phototherapy." He was able to demonstrate that invisible light and ultraviolet light, among others, had therapeutic value.

Niels Ryberg Finsen (15. prosince 1860 – 24. záøí 1904) Nobelovu cenu získal v roce 1903 za objev speciálního zpùsobu léèení nìkterých nemocí a zvláštì tuberkulózy kùže za pomoci koncentrovaných paprskù svìtla. Dánský lékaø Niels Ryberg Finsen se narodil roku 1860. Studoval medicínu na univerzitì v Kodani, ale bìhem studia pøíliš nevynikal. Po ukonèení studia se o nìm dost dlouho témìø nic nevìdìlo. Finsen se plnì soustøedil na klinické pøezkoušení léèivých úèinkù sluneèního svìtla. V zemi bylo slunce poskrovnu, a proto navrhl konstrukci pøístroje, který by vydával umìlé sluneèní svìtlo, jež by se pak mìlo soustavou dlouhých trubic pøivádìt na nemocná místa. V roce 1896 založil v Kodani Ústav pro terapii svìtlem (helioterapii) a v roce 1898 se stal profesorem na zdejší lékaøské fakultì. V historii medicíny nebyl Finsen prvním, kdo propagoval léèebné úèinky svìtla. K jeho úspìchu mu pomohla náhoda pøi léèbì pacienta trpícího kožní tuberkulózou. Zpoèátku Finsen pracoval jenom s obyèejným sluneèním svìtlem, pozdìji jej zesiloval koncentrováním sluneèních paprskù køemièitými èoèkami. Nejvhodnìjší svìtelný zdroj našel nakonec v obloukové lampì, která byla ideálním zdrojem umìlého svìtla a s jejíž pomocí v roce 1898 vyléèil u svého pacienta lupus (lupus vulgaris – tuberkulóza kùže). Od té doby se léèí lupus uhlíkovou lampou, která byla nazvána Finsenovou lampou, jejíž svìtlo je bohaté na ultrafialové paprsky. Finsenovy výsledky vyvolaly obrovský zájem o léèbu sluneèním svìtlem a znamenaly zcela nový smìr v medicínì.

Niels Ryberg Finsen who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1903 for introducing phototherapy for lupus vulgaris. He was only the third laureate in medicine, after Emil von Behring (1901) and Ronald Ross (1902), and the first for outstanding achievements in the field of dermatology. Several thousand lupus vulgaris patients from different European countries were treated in the Medical Light Institute in Copenhagen, founded by Finsen, from 1896 until his death in 1904. Until the tuberculostatic drugs were introduced in the middle of the 20th century, the "Finsen Exposure" was the only effective therapy of lupus vulgaris. The carbon arc lamp initially used by Finsen was later modified and then eventually replaced by the mercury quartz lamp developed by Arons. Today Finsen is rightly recognized as the founder of the modern dermatological phototherapy. CLOSE WINDOW

Professor i medisin samme sted 1898. Niels R. Finsen studerte lysets påvirkning på organismen og ble stråleterapiens grunnlegger. I 1893 publiserte han sin første artikel om "Om Lysets Indvirkninger paa Huden", og 1896 kom hans viktigste arbeid "Om Anvendelse i Medicinen af koncentrerede kemiske Lysstraaler". Her beskrives lysbehandling av lupus (hudtuberkulose), som skulle få stor betydning mange år fremover. Det ble opprettet et Finsens medicinske Lysinstitut - i stor grad finansiert ved innsamlede midler - senere Finseninstituttet i København. Liknende lysinstitutter ble opprettet rundt om i verden. This year's Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine has been awarded by the Council of Professors of the Caroline Institute to Professor Niels Finsen of Copenhagen in recognition of his work on the treatment of diseases, and in particular the treatment of lupus vulgaris by means of concentrated light rays. Finsen's studies in connection with this disease constitute the most well-known and the most fruitful part of his work and are responsible for the important role played by phototherapy in medical art today. His first steps in the field of phototherapy, however, were directed towards general biological problems related to the effects of light on the organism. This led him to consider a number of specific problems concerning the effects of light on the skin in certain diseases. At first his research was not concerned with lupus but with another disease, smallpox. This first project in the field of therapeutics was certainly far removed from the principles that Finsen followed later in the treatment of lupus and other diseases, but it prepared the way none the less for his major research in this latter field. Although this work brought recognition for Finsen, it is nevertheless of secondary importance when compared with the results of his further research. Finsen's stroke of genius in his later work was to attempt to make therapeutic use of the powerful biological effects of highly refrangible rays. In this way he blazed the trail for scientific phototherapy and for the curative use also of other rays than those contained in ordinary light.
