An Introduction
Who was William Faulkner?
William Faulkner on the Web is intended as an evolving guide to the life and works of William Faulkner, by all accounts one of America's greatest writers. His apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County , setting for most of his fiction and patterned after his real-life home in Oxford and Lafayette County, Mississippi, is perhaps the most famous address in American literature; it is a familiar location to literature students of all ages who encounter it in such often-anthologized stories as " Barn Burning " and " A Rose for Emily ." Cinema buffs still enjoy films such as To Have and Have Not and The Big Sleep which Faulkner co-wrote. Visitors from around the world come here to visit Rowan Oak , his home in Oxford, and to attend the annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference at the University of Mississippi each August. Most important, though, are his novels —

Biography of William Faulkner (1897-1962)
William Faulkner William Faulkner was a prolific writer who became very famous during his lifetime but who shied away from the spotlight as much as possible. He is remembered as both a gentlemanly southern eccentric and an arrogant, snobbish alcoholic. But perhaps the best way to describe Faulkner is to describe his heritage, for, like so many of his literary characters, Faulkner was profoundly affected by his family. Faulkner's great grandfather, Colonel William Falkner (Faulkner added the "u" to his name), was born in 1825 and moved to Mississippi at the age of 14. He was a lawyer, writer, politician, soldier, and pioneer who was involved in several murder trials - including two in which he was accused - and was a best-selling novelist. During the Civil War he recruited a (Confederate) regiment and was elected its colonel, but his arrogance caused his troop to demote him and he left to recruit another regiment. After the war he became involved in the railroad business and made a lot of money; he bought a plantation and began to write books, one of which became a best-seller. He ran for Mississippi state legislature in 1889, but his opponent shot and killed him before the election. Faulkner's grandfather was the colonel's oldest son, John Wesley Thompson Falkner. He inherited his father's railroad fortune and became an Assistant U.S. Attorney. He later became the president of the First National Bank of Oxford, Mississippi.

Selected Resources on William Faulkner William Cuthbert Faulkner is renowned as one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century. Born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25,1897, he spent most of his life in Mississippi and built many of his short stories and novels around his observations and experiences of life in the South. Faulkner's mythical Yoknapatawpha County serves as the locale for many of his stories and is so well known both in print and in motion pictures as to deserve a real place on the map. Myth or not, it will always survive on the literary map of the United States because of Faulkner's technical brilliance and gift for storytelling. After reading Faulkner and experiencing the rush of life so vividly depicted in his stories and in his novels, a visitor to Yoknapatawpha might agree with Lena's assessment of her experiences in Faulkner's A Light in August My, my. A body does get around. Here we ain't been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it's already Tennessee.

Videotape and text of Arnold Beverly's confession that he killed Officer Daniel faulkner as part of a mob hit assisted by Philadelphia police. PDF text of Federal District Judge william Yohn's ruling that the confession was inadmissable due to the statute of limitations expiration.
http://www.iacenter.org/maj_beverly.htm
BEVERLY CONFESSION REJECTED: COURT ISSUES  ALARMING RULING AGAINST MUMIA By Monica Moorehead On July 19, Federal District Judge William Yohn issued a 13- page ruling in which he turned down a petition filed by the  new legal counsel representing African American political  prisoner and journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal. In essence, Yohn  refused to accept the confession of Arnold Beverly as an  addition to a writ of habeas corpus filed originally in this  particular court on Oct. 15, 1999. The federal district court is the only high court that could  automatically grant Abu-Jamal the right to an evidentiary  hearing. He has requested such a hearing, at which he could  present new evidence in his case, based on 29 violations of  the U.S. Constitution carried out during his original sham  trial. These 29 violations were outlined in the original  writ of habeas corpus. An evidentiary hearing would allow all suppressed evidence  to finally be heard. But this negative ruling by Yohn makes  it less likely that the evidentiary hearing will ever  happen. Arnold Beverly signed an affidavit stating that he was a hit  man who had been hired and paid by the mob to kill a white  policeman, Daniel Faulkner, on Dec. 9, 1981, in  Philadelphia. Abu-Jamal was accused and subsequently  convicted of that killing. He has been languishing on death  row since July 3, 1982, and could face execution once his  federal appeals have been exhausted. Two death warrants have  been signed by the Pennsylvania governor and then withdrawn  under mass pressure during Abu-Jamal's state appeals.
