Euler (-Chelpin), Ulf (Svante) von (szül. 1895. febr. 7. Stockholm, Svédország – megh. 1983. márc. 9.

Thursday, December 30, 2004; Page B07 Julius Axelrod, 92, the National Institute of Mental Health neuroscientist who shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for showing "how nerves talk to each other," died Dec. 29 at his home in Rockville. He had heart trouble in recent years. A basket maker's son, Dr. Axelrod got a late start in the career that would bring him renown. He spent years as a biochemist in a food-testing laboratory before he focused on neuroscience, the study of nerves and their relation to behavior and learning. Described as a modest and brilliant man, he only sought a doctorate at the urging of colleagues and he completed it in a matter of months of night classes.
NIH neuroscientist Julius Axelrod wore glasses with a darkened lens after an accident in 1938.

Sune Bergstrom
A Nobel prizewinning biochemist, he discovered how prostaglandins regulate vital life processes, with many consequences for treatment

Sune Bergstrom, who has died aged 88 after a long illness, won the Nobel prize for medicine in 1982, sharing the award with the famous British pharmacologist Sir John Vane and Bengt Samuelsson, his fellow Swedish biochemist. They discovered the vital role played in the body by a family of substances called prostaglandins and related compounds. They showed that prostaglandins were hormone-like agents involved in many processes that caused inflammation after an injury or illness, affected the flexibility of blood vessels, regulated contractions of the uterus, helped to clot blood, and directed other activities.

Obituary for Dr. Julius Axelrod
May 30, 1912 - December 29, 2004

by Tahira Farooqui, Ph.D.
Dr. Julius Axelrod 92, died Wednesday, December 29th, 2004 in Rockville, MD.

Dr. Axelrod was one of the outstanding leaders in neuroscience. He published many important papers on several topics including catecholamines (I have listed only few references below). His absence will make scientists realize that they have lost “a great neuroscientist, a pharmacologist and a biologist” who devoted his career to academic excellence.
Dr. Julius Axelrod was born May 30th, 1912 in New York City in the East side of Manhatton. He received his Masters degree in Chemistry in 1941 and Ph.D. in Pharmacology in 1955. He became chief of the National Institute of Mental Health's pharmacology section and worked there for almost 30 years. He was awarded a noble prize in Medicine or Physiology, along with Bernard Katz and Ulf von Euler in 1970 on the work involving storage, release and inactivation of catecholamine neurotransmitters. He continued directing research even after his retirement in 1984.

Dr. Julius Axelrod
Julius Axelrod was born on May 30th, 1912, in New York City. He obtained his B.Sc. in 1933 at the College of the City of New York, M.A. in 1941 at New York University, and Ph.D. in 1955 from the George Washington University.
“In October 1970, the Karolinska Institutet decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation".
The discoveries which the 1970 Nobel laureates have made have given us answers to questions of fundamental importance for the understanding of the mechanism underlying the transmission between the nerve cells, i.e. at the so-called synapses, and between the nerve terminals and the so-called effector organs, for instance between the motor nerve fibres and the muscle fibres which they innervate. The transmission between the nerve cells, which radically differs from the mechanisms underlying the impulse transmission in the nerve fibres, is mediated by chemical substances, so-called neurotransmitters, which carry the message from one cell to the other. The three scientists have been working independently of each other, but their discoveries all contribute in solving principal questions concerning the neurotransmitters, their storage, release and inactivation.

Robert Koch and his bacillus, Alexander Fleming and antibiotics, Thomas Morgan and his studies on the drosophila fly, Prusiner and the prion, Charpak and the exploration of the most minute particles of matter... Many advances in science are inextricably linked to the names of Nobel prizewinners. As it celebrates its centenary, we take a look behind the scenes of this renowned institution. AN INVETERATE traveller, his motto is a familiar one: 'My home is where I work - and I work everywhere'. Born in Sweden in 1833, Alfred Nobel spent his childhood in St. Petersburg, made his industrial mark in Hamburg, settled in Paris, and died in San Remo, one 10 December, the day on which the Nobel Prizes for Physics and Chemistry continue to be awarded. A misanthrope sensitive to the ills of the world, a melancholic with more than a touch of irony, a pacifist who earned his fortune from explosives, Alfred Nobel led a strange life. Following an initial innovation based on nitro-glycerine, Nobel went on to accumulate a huge number of patents (355 to his name) and factories (about a hundred), and a considerable fortune, all the while harbouring the hope of one day discovering a substance or a device with sufficient destructive power to banish war for ever.

Prostaglandins: Chemical Messengers
Prostaglandins are a member of the lipid class of biochemicals and are known for their potent physiological properties. They belong to a subclass of lipids known as the eicosanoids because of their structural similarities to the C-20 polyunsaturated fatty acids, the eicosanoic acids. Prostaglandins vary somewhat, however, from one another based upon subtle differences in their chemical structures, some exhibiting, for instance, different side-chain substitutions than others. These small variations are believed to be responsible for the immense diversity of effects characteristic of prostaglandins. In general, prostaglandins act in a manner similar to that of hormones, by stimulating target cells into action. However, they differ from hormones in that they act locally, near their site of synthesis, and they are metabolized very rapidly. Also, the same prostaglandins act differently in different tissues.
Prostaglandin A3 First discovered in semen during the 1930s by Swedish scientist Ulf von Euler, prostaglandins received their name from the prostate gland, where they were first thought to originate. Early studies of prostaglandins carried out by Euler and other researchers revealed that these substances were active, capable of both lowering blood pressure and instigating the contraction of uterine tissue. Later efforts revealed much more, including the fact that that prostaglandins do not occur only in the prostate gland, but can, in fact, be found in many animal tissues since they are not restricted to specific organs. Prostaglandins, it was also discovered, are only active for a short period of time before they are modified into a non-functional form and are subsequently excreted from the body. Thus, tissues cannot effectively store prostaglandins, but must instead synthesize them in a nearby area when needed. Synthesis takes place in the membranes of various cells.
