He held that since it might be possible to survive a nuclear war, it was essential to plan to do just that. Kahn founded the influential Hudson Institute

Swedish physiologist who shared the 1970 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (with Sir Bernard Katz and Julius Axelrod) for their independent study of transmitter mechanisms of nerve cells. Since 1906, when Thomas Elliott first proposed that nerve cells communicate with each other and the muscles they control by the release of chemicals, there had been efforts to identify these substances. Euler's recognition was for his discovery (1946) of noradrenaline which serves as neurotransmitter at the nerve terminals of the sympathetic nervous system. He further showed how noradrenaline is stored in small nerve granules within the nerve fibres of this system. Euler had earlier, in 1935, discovered the substance he named

(b. February 7 Stockholm Sweden ; d. March 9 ) was a Swedish physiologist and pharmacologist . He won a Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in for his work on neurotransmitters
Life
Ulf S. von Euler was the son of two noted scientists , Dr. Hans von Euler-Chelpin , a professor of chemistry , and Dr. Astrid Cleve, a professor of botany and geology . His father was German and the recipient of Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1929, and his maternal grandfather was Per Teodor Cleve , Professor of Chemistry at the Uppsala University , and the discoverer of the chemical elements thulium and holmium
Enjoying such a privileged family environment in science, education and research, it is not surprising that young Ulf would become a scientist, too, so he went to study medicine at the Karolinska Institute in . At Karolinska, he worked under Robin F¥hraeus in blood sedimentation and rheology and did research work on the pathophysiology of vasoconstriction . He presented his doctoral thesis in , and was appointed as Assistant Professor in Pharmacology in the same year, with the support of G. Liljestrand. From 1930 to

Associate Editors This month we begin another feature and cover series to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Hypertension . For the next several issues, we shall honor those highly respected leaders and investigators who played important roles for the Council for High Blood Pressure Research (CHBPR). Each of the individuals that we honor had Awards, or was a speaker invited to present the Corcoran or other important Special Lectures. Then, sometime following these acknowledgments of their seminal scientific achievements or scientific presentations highlighting their important investigative work, they were honored by selection to receive the Nobel Prize

has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1970 jointly to
Bernard Katz, Ulf von Euler and Julius Axelrod
for their discoveries concerning "the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation".
Sir Bernard Katz ' discoveries concerning the mechanism for the release of the transmitter acetylcholine from the nerve terminals at the nerve-muscle junction, under the influence of the nerve impulses, are fundamental not only for the understanding of the so-called cholinergic transmission, but are also of primary importance for our knowledge about the synaptic transmission between the nerve cells in the central nervous system.
Professor Ulf von Euler has discovered that the substance noradrenaline serves as neurotransmitter at the nerve terminals of the sympathetic nervous system. He has also shown how this substance is stored in small nerve granules within the nerve fibres of this system.

History
Bragg diffraction was first proposed by (Click link for more info and facts about William Lawrence Bragg) William Lawrence Bragg in 1912 as a means of analyzing the structure of (A crystalline element used as a component in various electronic devices) crystal s. Bragg and his father (Click link for more info and facts about William Henry Bragg) William Henry Bragg collimated (Click link for more info and facts about x-ray) x-ray s to diffract off of different crystal planes. The x-rays were then collected in an ionization chamber and the level of (The process of ionizing; the formation of ions by separating atoms or molecules or radicals or by adding or subtracting electrons from atoms by strong electric fields in a gas) ionization was measured as a function of the incident angle of the x-rays.
Using this method, the Braggs were able to determine the crystalline spacing for a number of substances.
Mechanics
The image on the right depicts a salt crystal ( (Click link for more info and facts about NaCl) NaCl ) in two different Bragg plane configurations. The incident angle of the diffracting wave determines which plane is calculated in the diffraction.
