"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. From its inception half a century ago, its potential as an analytical tool for identifying compounds was clear, albeit limited by the fact that nmr is an intrinsically weak effect, requiring the most sensitive technology. Richard Ernst is the scientist who, more than anyone else, has shown how this weakness can be overcome, and in so doing has transformed the technique into arguably the most powerful tool that chemists now have at their disposal for structural analysis. The key breakthroughs were achieved by successfully developing a whole range of ingenious approaches - including powerful so-called "2-dimensional nmr" strategies. In this programme we are taken on a highly personal tour of Richard's life from childhood when he crawled around in his private world, the attic of the old house in which he was brought up and where he discovered and old box of chemicals, to the development of his exceptional ability to make the most complex state-of-the-art experimental equipment work.

Richard Ernst
Born in Winterthur, Switzerland, on August 14, 1933, studied chemistry at Eidgen¶ssische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich. Diploma in 1962, doctor's degree in physical chemistry (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) in 1962.
After obtaining his doctorate, Ernst worked in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory of ETH Zurich for a short time, then spent five years in the research department of Varian Associates at Palo Alto, California. Returning to ETH to teach physical Chemistry in 1968, he has held a full professorship there since 1976. He retired in 1998 from his professorship, following the legal requirements.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1991 "for his contribution to the development of the methodology of high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy".

Richard Robert Ernst
(born August 14 ) is a Swiss chemist and Nobel Laureate.
Ernst was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in for his contributions towards the development of multidimensional, Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy while at Varian Associates, Palo Alto California . This technique is very largely used in medicine to get precise images of the human body, and in such context is known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
In the poster made by the Nobel Prize committee, Richard Ernst acknowledged that the idea he has developed originally came from the Belgian scientist Jean Jeener, professor at the Universit© Libre de Bruxelles
He studied at and now serves on the faculty of the Eidgen¶ssische Technische Hochschule (Federal Institute of Technology) in Z¼rich , Switzerland.

U.S.A. Re: Reduction of Faculty in the Mathematics Department Dear Dr. Goergen, I have heard of the plans to reduce the faculty in the mathematics department of the University of Rochester from 21 to 10 and to terminate the graduate program in mathematics. I have studied the Report of the Rochester Fact Finding ad hoc Committee of December 11, 1995, and the related documentary papers. With this letter, I would like to tell you frankly my opinion as a physical chemist who would not have won a Nobel Prize without a very thorough training in basic mathematics, in addition to my principal studies in chemistry. Fortunately, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich had since many decades and still has the foresight to know that mathematics is the basis for all natural sciences and mathematics is becoming more and more important as science becomes more advanced and more quantitative. Advances in chemistry are no longer possible without the most sophisticated mathematical tools and with the best training possible by experts in pure and applied mathematics. Reducing mathematics to a mere service operation for other scientists will remove the firm basis from the University of Rochester and start its decline towards a provincial school that sooner or later has to be closed due to its irrelevance. I cannot imagine that this is your intent. If you would like to maintain a school with an international recognition, you have to try to find other ways to reduce expenditures. I am convinced it would be much better to close entire departments of specialization and to concentrate the limited means of the university to a subset of selected disciplines. However, I do not know of any discipline that would not need a strong foundation in mathematics.

Dr. Richard Ernst, 1999 Northwest Lecturer in Physical Chemistry
Dr. Richard R. Ernst of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland, is the 1999 Northwest Lecturer in Physical Chemistry. Dr. Ernst won the 1991 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the development of high-resolution, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. More information about Dr. Ernst can be accessed at http://www.nobel.se/laureates/chemistry-1991.html He will visit PNNL on June 1, 1999, to meet with Lab staff and present a lecture on "Intramolecular Dynamics of Biomolecules Explored by NMR." The lecture will be given at 3:30 p.m. in the EMSL Auditorium. A reception will follow the lecture. After his PNNL visit, Dr. Ernst will travel to the University of Washington and Oregon State University where he will present lectures and meet with researchers at those institutions. The Northwest Lectureship in Physical Chemistry was organized in 1990 by staff from the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory at PNNL and representatives of Oregon State University, the University of Idaho, the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, and Washington State University. The lectureship was established to recognize outstanding researchers in the field of physical chemistry and to bring the recipients of the award to the Pacific Northwest to share their knowledge and experience with scientists in the region. Previous recipients of the Northwest Lectureship in Physical Chemistry are:
