Einthoven, Willem Einthoven, Willem (1860-1927), Dutch physiologist and Nobel laureate who founded the modern field of electrocardiography. Einthoven's most important invention, the string galvanometer, made possible the precise measurements of the electrical activity produced by the beating human heart. Modern electrocardiograph machines, which allow physicians to monitor heart function and to detect damage from heart attacks and other causes, are based on Einthoven's original invention. For his essential contributions to the development of electrocardiography, Einthoven was awarded the 1924 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. Born in Semarang, Java (in what is now Indonesia), Einthoven was ten when his family moved back to the Netherlands in 1870, settling in Utrecht. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in medicine in 1885 from the University of Utrecht, Einthoven became a professor of physiology at the Leiden University in the Netherlands, where he remained for the rest of his career.

A Dutch physician and physiologist, Willem Einthoven, developed the first Electro Cardiograph (ECG) Machine. It was a simple string - galvanometer - capable of measuring small changes in electrical potential as the heart contracted and relaxed. Electrodes were attached to the limbs of the patient. As the string deflected, it obstructed a beam of light and the photographic paper recorded the shadow. As the heart contracts and relaxes repeatedly, Einthoven could record the wave pattern of these impulses. The ECG machine of today looks very different but works on the same principle. Einthoven was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1924 for this discovery.
Willem Einthoven was born on May 21, 1860, in Semarang on the island of Java, in the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). His father was Jacob Einthoven, born and educated in Groningen, The Netherlands, an army medical offcer in the Indies, who later became parish doctor in Semarang. His mother was Louise M.M.C. de Vogel, daughter of the then Director of Finance in the Indies. Willem was the eldest son, and the third child in a family of three daughters and three sons. At the age of ten, Einthoven lost his father, and his mother decided to return with her six children to Holland, where the family settled in Utrecht.

Willem Einthoven
Physiologe, Anatom * 21.

About Willem Einthoven, The Einthoven Lectures and the Einthoven Foundation
Homepage Portal Willem Einthoven The Einthoven Foundation The Einthoven Lectures and The Einthoven Award Willem Einthoven (1860-1927) Willem Einthoven had a long career as professor at Leiden University, from 1886 until his death in 1927. Einthoven's contributions to the field were recognized in 1924 when he received the Nobel Prize . lt is characteristic of his modesty that accepting the prize he pointed out that the development of electrocardiography had only been made possible by concerted efforts of many workers in this field, among whom he especially mentioned his British friend, Thomas Lewis.
THE EINTHOVEN FOUNDATION
The Einthoven Foundation was established in 1979. The board of the Einthoven Foundation and its international advisory board now make proposals for potential recipients of the Einthoven Awards. One of the Major activities of the Einthoven Foundation is the organization of congresses and seminars in which recent developments in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and related areas are placed in historical perspective. The Einthoven Lectures are generally part of those meetings but on special occasions the lectures are held separately. Programs are planned to stimulate young investigators who perform original clinical and fundamental research related to the heart and blood vessels. The Einthoven Foundation also encourages the publication of scientific or otherwise enlightening material that may, in a broad sense, serve the preservation of the history of developments in the field of cardiology.

Below that, the same tracing corrected mathematically. Timescale in 0.1 sec is stretched (S); the four peaks in the corrected tracing are now called PQRST.

Biography
As the only participant from the Netherlands at the First International Congress of Physiology, held in Basle in 1889, Einthoven was a witness to the striking demonstration by Augustus D. Waller of the use of the capillary electrometer to record the electrical activity of the human heart. Returning home, Einthoven enthusiastically reported his observations in a review of the meeting published for his Dutch colleagues. We know that Einthoven began similar electrophysiologic studies in humans within a year of the Basel meeting. “I read [your papers] with much pleasure,” Einthoven wrote to Waller from Leiden on July 23, 1890, “and had already the opportunity to deliver a lecture on your extremely interesting investigations and to demonstrate the electromotive changes connected with the beat of the human heart.”
Willem Einthoven in Ann Arbor, 1924, photographed by Frank Wilson
The principle of the string galvanometer assembled by Einthoven is that current flow through a conducting wire induces a magnetic field around the wire that is proportional to the current applied. When the wire is suspended in a separate magnetic field, the resulting interaction between the two magnetic fields causes a displacement of the wire that is proportional to the applied current. Production of an extremely thin quartz string with low mass was achieved by drawing out the molten fiber behind an arrow fired from a bow. Projection of the shadow of the moving string, with amplification and photographic recording over time, produces a graphic image of the variation of the source current as projected on the body surface.
