Eigen, Manfred
(b. May 9, 1927, Bochum, Ger.), German physicist who was corecipient, with R.G.W. Norrish and George Porter , of the 1967 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for work on extremely rapid chemical reactions. Eigen was able to study many extremely fast chemical reactions by a variety of methods that he introduced and which are called relaxation techniques. These involve the application of bursts of energy to a solution that briefly destroy its equilibrium before a new equilibrium is reached. Eigen studied what happened to the solution in the extremely brief interval between the two equilibria by means of absorption spectroscopy. Among specific topics thus investigated were the rate of hydrogen ion formation through dissociation in water, diffusion-controlled protolytic reactions, and the kinetics of keto-enol tautomerism.

Eigen, Manfred German chemist who worked on extremely rapid chemical reactions (those taking less than 1 millisecond). From 1954 he developed a technique by which very short bursts of energy could be applied to solutions, disrupting their equilibrium and enabling him to investigate momentary reactions, such as the formation and dissociation of water. Nobel prize 1967.
Eigen investigated particularly very fast biochemical reactions that take place in the body. With his colleague Ruthild Winkler he tried to relate chance and chemistry in processes that could have led to the origin of life on Earth. Eigen theorized that in the 'primeval soup' of the early Earth, cycles of chemical reactions would have occurred, one reproducing nucleic acids and one reproducing proteins, and that life arose from a combination of these.

Scientific Discipline: Chemistry
Year of Award: 1967
Co-Recipients: Profs. Norrish and Porter Manfred Eigen
In his research on evolutionary processes Eigen bases himself experimentally on the study of viruses which attack bacteria. Viruses frequently undergo major changes on account of frequent reproductive errors; accordingly the molecular evolution theory might also be used to develop strategies for the fight against viral diseases. It would be conceivable that viral mutation rates could be increased to such an extent that the resulting rate of reproductive errors would make the viruses’ genetic programme meaningless and the viruses themselves would become biologically inactive matter. This would also explain why, as the HIV virus proliferates with a quite high “error rate”, the body’s defence system gradually “loses its bearings” and breaks down after a long latency period; at the same time, however, this approach opens up new ways for successfully combating disease.
Eigen was awarded one half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1967; the other half was shared by Professor Ronald G. W. Norrish, Cambridge, and Professor George Porter, London. The three scientists were honoured “for their studies of extremely fast chemical reactions, effected by disturbing the equilibrium by means of very short pulses of energy”.

THE 1997-98 JACOB MARSCHAK COLLOQUIUM FEBRUARY 1998 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. IN THE KORN CONVOCATION HALL (C-314) ANDERSON SCHOOL M ANFRED EIGEN Professor and Chairman, Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, 1967 presents : " DARWINIAN EVOLUTION AND MULTIDIMENSIONAL FITNESS LANDSCAPES " FIELD/SUBFIELD: Biology and Chemistry/Evolutionary Biotechnology and Molecular Self-Organization ABSTRACT What is the distinguishing feature of a living system that singularizes it from every non-living chemical ensemble, regardless of the extent of the complexity. The differentiable characteristic of the living system is information. Information assures the controlled reproduction of all the constituents, thereby ensuring the conservation of viability. Information - unlike energy - is not subject to a conservation law. Hence the fundamental question behind the origin of life is: How can information originate? Main Menu Back to the top MANFRED EIGEN: BIOGRAPHY For many years the evolution of self-organizing systems has been investigated at the Max-Planck Institute for BioPhysical Chemistry in Gottingen. Viruses that infect bacteria were used to carry out this research. Methods employing these "evolution machines" were developed by Manfred Eigen who received the Nobel Prize in 1967 for his research on very rapid chemical kinetics. Already at that time his scientific interest was focused almost exclusively on problems concerning evolution. In 1971 he published a pioneering paper dealing with two new concepts: the "self-organization of matter" and the "evolution of biological macromolecules"; these have since become classical concepts in the field of evolution. In 1992 he was awarded the prestigious Paul Ehrlich Prize for the theory presented in that paper and for its far-reaching consequences.
