'''Paul Ehrlich''' ( March 14 August 20 ) was a German scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine . He is noted for his work in hematology immunology , and chemotherapy . Ehrlich predicted autoimmunity and called it "''horror autotoxicus''". He coined the term "''chemotherapy''". The idea of a "''magic bullet''" is also his.
Life
Paul Ehrlich was born on 14 March 1854 in Strehlen ( Silesia ). Already as a pupil and student of medicine he was interested in colouring microscopic tissue substances.
In his dissertation at the Leipzig university he picked up the topic again ("Beitrge zur Theorie und Praxis der histologischen Frbung").
After his clinical education and habilitation ("Das Sauerstoffbedrfnis des Organismus") at the Charit in Berlin in he received a call from Robert Koch to join the Institute for Infection Diseases in Berlin (
Paul Ehrlich overcame the tuberculosis disease, with which he was infected in Egypt . Thereafter he worked with his friend Emil Adolf Behring to contribute to the development of the diphtheria serum.

The Population Explosion
This sequel to Paul Ehrlich 's 1968 landmark best-seller The Population Bomb examines the critical choices we face today and proposes an agenda for the 1990s to avoid global ecocide. The Population Explosion vividly describes how the Earth's population, growing by 95 million people a year, is rapidly depleting the planet's resources, resulting in famine, global warming, acid rain, and other major problems . Paul and Anne Ehrlich also clearly and concisely point to immediate action that will lessen the threat of ruin and begin to build a more peaceful, sane, and secure world. All too often, overpopulation is thought of simply as crowding: too many people in a given area, too high a population density. For instance, the deputy editor in chief of Forbes magazine pointed out recently, in connection with a plea for more population growth in the United States: "If all the people from China and India lived in the continental U.S. (excluding Alaska), this country would still have a smaller population density than England, Holland, or Belgium." The appropriate response is "So what?" Density is generally irrelevant to questions of overpopulation. For instance, if brute density were the criterion, one would have to conclude that Africa is "underpopulated," because it has only 55 people per square mile, while Europe (excluding the USSR) has 261 and Japan 857. A more sophisticated measure would take into consideration the amount of Africa not covered by desert or "impenetrable" forest. This more habitable portion is just a little over half the continent's area, giving an effective population density of 117 per square mile. That's still only about a fifth of that in the United Kingdom. Even by 2020, Africa's effective density is projected to grow to only about that of France today (266), and few people would consider France excessively crowded or overpopulated.

Egyptian Medicine Paul Ehrlich Paul Ehrlich was a young scientists when he joined the research team of Robert Koch. He, along with anothe Scientist, Emi Behring, developed an interest in the antibodies produced by the human body. His studies of these led him to believe that a chemical substance could be produced to work alongside these antibodies, killing specific bacteria without harming the rest of the body. This line of research led to Ehrlich opening his own research institute, to search for 'The Magic Bullet'. The 'Magic Bullet' was the name given to the much sought after dye or drug that would counter act the spread of infection. His results were a limited success: he found dyes that attacked malaria and some sleeping sickness bugs. In 1906 the detection by Hoffman of the microbes that caused syphilis opened up a new line of research. Ehrlich's team tested over 600 chemical compounds, searching for one that would target and destroy the syphilis germ. In 1909, a new scientist joined his team. He was asked to retest all of the discarded chemicals that had previously been shown to fail. The 606th compound selected and destroyed the germ. Ehrlich rigorously tested the vaccine and in 1911 Savarsan 606 was used for the first time on Humans.

SCIENCE FRIDAY... Science Friday Archives October > October 27, 2000: Hour Two: Paul Ehrlich: Human Natures How much do our genes determine our behavior? Is there such a thing as "genetic destiny?" And is evolution merely a biological process, or is it a cultural process as well? In this hour, we'll talk with biologist Paul Ehrlich about human natures, how they change, and about the history and future of human evolution. Plus, an alarming series of reports from conference on coral reefs taking place this week in Indonesia says that, unless action is taken now, there may not be any reefs left in 25 years. We'll find out why some scientists are saying that reefs are on the rocks - a combination of human neglect, and rising ocean temperatures. Julian Simon's Bet With Paul Ehrlich Paul Ehrlich decided to put their money where their predictions were. Ehrlich had been predicting massive shortages in various natural resources for decades, while Simon claimed natural resources were infinite. Simon offered Ehrlich a bet centered on the market price of metals. Ehrlich would pick a quantity of any five metals he liked worth $1,000 in 1980. If the 1990 price of the metals, after adjusting for inflation, was more than $1,000 (i.e. the metals became more scarce), Ehrlich would win. If, however, the value of the metals after inflation was less than $1,000 (i.e. the metals became less scare), Simon would win. The loser would mail the winner a check for the change in price. Ehrlich agreed to the bet, and chose copper, chrome, nickel, tin and tungsten. By 1990, all five metal were below their inflation-adjusted price level in 1980. Ehrlich lost the bet and sent Simon a check for $576.07. Prices of the metals chosen by Ehrlich fell so much that Simon would have won the bet even if the prices hadn't been adjusted for inflation. Here's how each of the metals performed from 1980-1990.

Paul Ehrlich was born on March 14, 1854 at Strehlen, in Upper Silesia , Germany. He was the son of Ismar Ehrlich and his wife Rosa Weigert, whose nephew was the great bacteriologist Karl Weigert.
Ehrlich was educated at the Gymnasium at Breslau and subsequently at the Universities of Breslau, Strassburg, Freiburg-im-Breisgau and Leipzig. In 1878 he obtained his doctorate of medicine by means of a dissertation on the theory and practice of staining animal tissues. This work was one of the results of his great interest in the aniline dyes discovered by W. H. Perkin in 1853.
In 1878 he was appointed assistant to Professor Frerichs at the Berlin Medical Clinic, who gave him every facility to continue his work with these dyes and the staining of tissues with them. Ehrlich showed that all the dyes used could be classified as being basic, acid or neutral and his work on the staining of granules in blood cells laid the foundations of future work on haematology and the staining of tissues.
In 1882 Ehrlich published his method of staining the tubercle bacillus that Koch had discovered and this method was the basis of the subsequent modifications introduced by Ziehl and Neelson, which are still used today. From it was also derived the Gram method of staining bacteria so much used by modern bacteriologists.

Environmental Scientist: Dr. Paul Ehrlich
Perhaps Ehrlich's best known blunder is a 1980 bet he made with University of Maryland economist Julian Simon. Dr. Simon, who believes that human ingenuity holds the answers to population growth problems, asserted that if Ehrlich were correct and the world truly was heading toward an era of scarcity, then the price of various commodities would rise over time. Simon predicted that prices would fall instead and challenged Ehrlich to pick any commodity and any future date to illustrate his point. Ehrlich accepted the challenge: In October 1980, he purchased $1,000 worth of five metals ($200 each) tin, tungsten, copper, nickel and chrome. Ehrlich bet that if the combined value of all five metals he purchased was higher in 1990, Simon would have to pay him the difference. If the prices turned out to be lower, Ehrlich would pay Simon the difference. Ten years later, Ehrlich sent Simon a check for $576 all five metals had fallen in price.

[Complete Bibliography ( pdf Paul R. Ehrlich received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Co-founder with Peter H. Raven of the field of coevolution, he has pursued long-term studies of the structure, dynamics, and genetics of natural butterfly populations. He has also been a pioneer in alerting the public to the problems of overpopulation, and in raising issues of population, resources, and the environment as matters of public policy. Professor Ehrlich's research group covers several areas. It continues to study the dynamics and genetics of natural populations of checkerspot butterflies ( Euphydryas ). This research has applications to such problems as the control of insect pests and optimum designs for nature reserves. A central focus of his group is investigating ways that human-disturbed landscapes can be made more hospitable to biodiversity. This work in "countryside biogeography" is under the direction of Dr. Gretchen Daily, founder of the field. The Ehrlich group's policy research on the population-resource-environment crisis takes a broad overview of the world situation, but also works intensively in such areas of immediate legislative interests as endangered species and the preservation of genetic resources. A special interest of Ehrlich's is cultural evolution, especially with respect to environmental ethics.
