Web www.doyletics.com This book by Gerald Edelman is a very comprehensive and difficult to read book, one I've been able to get through, not so much based on my sketchy knowledge of neurology, but on my in-depth knowledge of real-time software design and recursive software. He uses his theory of neuronal group selection [TNGS] to create mechanisms for short term and long term memory storage. In Roger Schank's Tell Me A Story , Schank offers a theory that all of our conceptual memory capability requires that we tell or relate the happening to ourselves or to another person. He makes a good case that, lacking such telling, the memory will be gone within weeks. That makes a lot of sense to me personally. As I try to recall specific episodes during a traumatic period of my life, when some things happened that I told no one, I find very little that I can recall. Only memories from that time are episodes of things I have since related to other people. Edelman points out that memory is not placed in the brain as a content, but as a reentrant strengthening of synaptic connections, which by reinforcement during the re-telling, can come to the level of long-term potentiation (LTP) that would create what we call permanent memories. If a memory of an event is reinforced by relating it to others, it stays in the same

Edelman Dr. Edelman is Director of The Neurosciences Institute and President of Neurosciences Research Foundation, a publicly supported not-for-profit organization that is the Institute's parent. Separately, he is Professor at The Scripps Research Institute and Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology at that institution. His early studies focused on the structure and diversity of antibodies. His subsequent work led to the discovery of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), which have been found to guide the fundamental processes by which an animal achieves its shape and form, and by which nervous systems are built. Dr. Edelman has formulated a detailed theory to explain the development and organization of higher brain functions. This theory was presented in his 1987 volume Neural Darwinism. In 1972, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the structure and function of antibodies. Apply Contact Calendar Media ... Home

Edelman to Deliver Marschak Memorial Lecture, Feb. 18 LOS ANGELES - Gerald M. Edelman From Brain Dynamics to Consciousness: How Matter Becomes Imagination. The lecture is cosponsored by the Jacob Marschak Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Mathematics in the Behavior Sciences at UCLA, the UCLA Brain Research Institute, the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, the UCLA Center for the Study of Evolution and the Origin of Life, the UCLA Center for Governance, the Metanexus Institute Local Societies Initiative, and the Templeton Foundation. Dr. Edelman has made significant research contributions in biophysics, protein chemistry, immunology, cell biology, and neurobiology. His early studies on the structure and diversity of antibodies led to the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1972. He then began research into the mechanisms involved in the regulation of primary cellular processes, particularly the control of cell growth and the development of multicellular organisms. He has focused on cell-cell interactions in early embryonic development and in the formation and function of the nervous system. These studies led to the discovery of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), which have been found to guide the fundamental processes by which an animal achieves its shape and form, and by which nervous systems are built. One of the most significant insights provided by this work is that the precursor gene for the neural cell adhesion molecule gave rise in evolution to the entire molecular system of adaptive immunity.
